So unsure!

Hello! my husband is american, from new orleans, and he's quite set on southern names for our son due in a month. i myself don't mind southern names, but there is one he suggested that i can't tell if i love or hate: Hazel for a boy. he suggested this because a southern writer flannery o'conner wrote a story about a male soldier called Hazel, and apparently the name is quite popular for boys in the south. To be honest, the more i think about the name, the more it looks and sounds fine: any opinions/thoughts? Thanks!

Isn't Hazel a girls name? 🤔

AdaColeman · 14/08/2018 18:15

Watership Down?

FannyCornforth · 14/08/2018 18:19

I think it's great, but the majority of people in the UK (me included) would assume that Hazel is a girl.

SleepingStandingUp · 14/08/2018 18:20

In the UK people will assume girl. I guess you could shorten it to something else but personally I wouldn't give my son an old ladies name

kenandbarbie · 14/08/2018 18:20

Are you living in the uk? If so I'd say definitely not, it's a girls name. I

SillySallySingsSongs · 14/08/2018 18:22

Not if you are in the UK.

Girlslikeme · 14/08/2018 18:24

Dislike it for a girl and even more so for a boy.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 14/08/2018 18:24

In the UK, Hazel is a girls name, please don't, he'll be bullied.

mydogishot · 14/08/2018 18:27

Your title made me think you were going to name your son unsure!

AtticaRose · 14/08/2018 18:29

The stats suggest that has not been used for boys in the US since the second world war (or perhaps a handful).

It hasn't been used as a boy's name in the UK ever, as far as I can tell.

I wouldn't. If it was a rare name, that might be understandable - but it's a fairly well-known female name.

mydogishot · 14/08/2018 18:32

However, thank you for reminding me to dig out my copy of Wise Blood.

Please don't call your son Hazel.

ReevaDiva · 14/08/2018 18:33

It's not even just a girls name, to me it's a middle aged ladies name. Please don't!

ReginaPhalange89 · 14/08/2018 18:40

If you're in the UK then definitely not .

AnyaMoondial · 14/08/2018 19:08

How about Hayzen? Very similar sound. I know a little 2 year ol d Hayzen, he is super cute.

Maireadd · 14/08/2018 20:08

I love it for a boy in theory!

Not sure how usable it is really, though. I think he’d get frustrated at being mistaken for a girl on paper, as well as the inevitable comments.

Hayes?

Icklepup · 14/08/2018 20:10

It's a girls name

Peachbubble · 14/08/2018 20:10

No, it's a girl's name in the UK. How about Hayden/Haydn?

SleepingStandingUp · 14/08/2018 21:15

Quite like Hayzen

strawberrypenguin · 14/08/2018 21:17

Sorry I think Hazel is a girls name

Theweasleytwins · 14/08/2018 21:19

Love Hazel for a girl, would immediately think girl😅

TallSlutNoPantiesthe2nd · 14/08/2018 21:59

Rowan instead?

brieandcrackers · 14/08/2018 22:08

Love the name Hazel but not sure I would give it to a little boy - could you use it as a middle name if you're both still keen?

villainousbroodmare · 14/08/2018 22:09

Lovely but I'd definitely think of it as a girl's name.

DC2018 · 14/08/2018 22:23

I don't like it for a boy tbh. Its too associated with girls in the UK.
Some southern inspired names;
Atticus,
Beau,
Deacon,
Cash,
Hudson,
Jackson,
Jed,
Rhett,
Parker,
Austin

Hazen is nice for a boy (prefer this spelling to Hayzen) - as in Hazen Audel, the American Bear Grylls.
