Sol for a girl?

I met a Spanish girl once called this and think it’s just lovely. It means “sun”.

Is it usable do you think? What associations come to mind?

Also, French speakers’ input appreciated: would this just be plain weird as a name to French ears, since “sol” means “floor” in French?

I dont like it at all. Its not a name certainly not if you are in the Uk and reminds me if the larger that you drink in the sun with a wedge of lime.

Quangot · 13/08/2018 08:29

It sounds good to me.

BertrandRussell · 13/08/2018 08:30

Plain wierd in French. Short for Solomon in English.

DannyDogg · 13/08/2018 08:32

Campbell

Could Marisol be a potential compromise if you are concerned about the French and/or English connotations?

Spanish name, phonetically meaning 'sun and sea', and you could always use 'Sol' as a family nickname, but giving her the option for the longer version too.

It's also a shortening of the name/title given to the Virgin Mary in Spanish (Maria de la Soledad), if you are mindful of religious connotations.

TheVanguardSix · 13/08/2018 08:36

Sol would be the diminutive for Marisol or Soledad. I’d go with one of those names, then use the diminutive Sol.

Maireadd · 13/08/2018 08:38

Thanks for the feedback. It is definitely a name!!

Marisol is pretty, but a bit long and frilly for me.

Bertrand Thanks for the French input. We have French family members so I always try to be mindful of how names sound to them too!

I know a little Soleil, which I have never heard as a name before, but it is lovely on her. Possibly an option for you?

musicalxo · 13/08/2018 08:41

Sounds more like a boy's name to me.

missfit123 · 13/08/2018 08:42

i know a Solera, I think that's a pretty name. I also like Sol but think it's quite boyish.

Dontbuymesocks · 13/08/2018 08:44

Everyone will think she’s a boy. I don’t look Kevin football but I still know who Sol Campbell is....

Twooter · 13/08/2018 08:44

It’s a boy’s name in the uk.

ifigoup · 13/08/2018 08:44

For a girl it can be short for

Solange
Solenn
Solène
Marisol
(Maria) Soledad

FuturePerfect · 13/08/2018 08:45

I know a little French girl (7) called Sol. Suits her.

Gojira · 13/08/2018 08:47

Solera? Isn't that an ice cream?

Not sure about Sol OP - it's a bit too masculine

RachelAnneJ · 13/08/2018 08:48

Sol Campbell. Only one I know.

KingIrving · 13/08/2018 08:52

Sol in French is weird. Not only does it mean floor/ or ground, but also a musical note (do, re, mi, fa , SOL, la, si, do)

BertrandRussell · 13/08/2018 08:54

“I know a little French girl (7) called Sol. Suits her“

Is she very flat and shiny?

MustBeThursday · 13/08/2018 09:02

I thought Sol is a shortened/nickname in Spain - it sounds incomplete

(It's not a musical note - that's So)

FuturePerfect · 13/08/2018 09:14

No Bertrand, she is a little ray of sunshine, unlike you apparently

BikeRunSki · 13/08/2018 09:17

Solange?

KingIrving · 13/08/2018 09:31

MustBeThursday it is a musical note in French .
I suffered through enough years of Conservatoire to be know it

LemonysSnicket · 13/08/2018 09:33

Sol is the cheap version of corona... served in most English bars

KingIrving · 13/08/2018 09:33

Where did that "be" come from?

motherlondon · 13/08/2018 09:33

I love Solange, and grew up with a beautiful boy called Sol
Sorry to be crude, but Sol by itself has a good chance of being teasing material.
