Sol for a girl?

Maireadd · 13/08/2018 08:23

I met a Spanish girl once called this and think it’s just lovely. It means “sun”.

Is it usable do you think? What associations come to mind?

Also, French speakers’ input appreciated: would this just be plain weird as a name to French ears, since “sol” means “floor” in French?

Sol in Spanish is also a masculine noun, obviously fine as a shortening for more typical girls names (Soledad, Marisol as mentioned) but as a stand alone name I find it a bit strange from a Spanish language point of view

BertrandRussell · 13/08/2018 10:05

Definitely a note. As in Tonic SolFa.

Rainbowmelon · 13/08/2018 10:10

Absolutely love the name Sol, for a boy though.
Would be shortened from Solaris for me!

Maireadd · 13/08/2018 10:10

OK, thank you everyone. Not a feasible name option then, by the sounds of it. Shame, I think it’s really simple and pretty.

The Spanish Sol I met was definitely just Sol, so it can’t be all that strange in Spanish? But I take all your very good points!

It sounds like Saul which is a boys name

butlerswharf · 13/08/2018 10:37

There's two Sols in the baby group I go to. They are both boys so personally I'd assume it was a boys name.

BertrandRussell · 13/08/2018 10:51

It’s short for Solomon.

wineymummy · 13/08/2018 10:54

Oh I love it. I thought Marisol too. Adds to name list for future DC2... If you like it, use it! It's not offensive and after a while, Sol will just be your daughter's name, everyone will forget the current associations. I would use Marisol though just to be clear it's a girl - she could also choose to be Mari later in life if she didn't like Sol.

MeyMary · 13/08/2018 12:21

I really like Solana, Marisol and Soleil nn Sol.

Solera reminds me of cholera, tbh...

MeyMary · 13/08/2018 12:22

(soleil is however masculine in French so that might seem like an odd choice to a native French speaker. Idk...)

Anonymumm · 13/08/2018 12:27

Really sorry to say OP, but just being honest, Sol reminds me of beer, and of the days when I used to watch Hollyoaks.

mistermagpie · 13/08/2018 12:44

I know a Soleil, I've always liked her name. She gets 'Sol' for short.

BertrandRussell · 13/08/2018 14:53

There are 19 Soleils in the UK. Amazing that 3 people on here know one!

TatianaLarina · 13/08/2018 17:32

I can’t speak for every French person but all the French I know should know that it was Spanish. It’s the first half of soleil anyway.

The solfège doesn’t really figure as Ray or Rae is commonly used in England nonetheless.

You’ll get a lot of mispronunciation of soleil in England tho, relatively few people seem to listen in French class...

Maireadd · 13/08/2018 17:36

Thanks for all the French input Smile

Not bothered about Soleil or any of the longer forms, I just love the simplicity of Sol!

TatianaLarina · 13/08/2018 17:44

I agree, I prefer Sol.

TatianaLarina · 13/08/2018 17:45

I knew a girl called Sol as a teenager, it was a very cool name (very cool girl).

2018isanewyear · 13/08/2018 17:56

Random...but how do you find how many or each given name are registered in U.K.?

I have tried to look before but no joy

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 13/08/2018 19:18

I know a Sol, he's short for Solomon. Often gets Solly. Wouldn't use it for a girl, sorry.

TheTimeThief · 13/08/2018 19:47

People suggesting Solana - just reminds me of the hotel in the sitcom 'Benidorm' !

I wouldn't use just Sol, Campbell is the first thing that comes to mind.

MikeUniformMike · 13/08/2018 20:16

Soledad

Goostacean · 14/08/2018 00:12

I disagree with the consensus - I agree with you, OP, it’s simple, pretty. Yes, means “sun” but so what? Do you plan to live in Spain or Latin America? No issues with nicknames- it can’t be shortened. And it doesn’t sound masculine to me, either. I like it :)

Quangot · 14/08/2018 08:30

Sol could be short for Sorrel, Solveig or Isolde.

MikeUniformMike · 14/08/2018 19:14

Why not use the Welsh name for Sun, Haul.

HouseOfSix · 14/08/2018 19:17

I know of a newborn Solara who presumably will get Sol (or Lara). It's a no from me. Sol sounds very boyish to me and I would expect the spelling Saul as well
