Boys names- something classic but not too common

We're struggling to agree on boys names for our baby. We've settled on a girl's first name already. We would like something that sounds classic/traditional, but that there won't be 5 of them in their class! Would love some feedback on our current front-runners:

Samson
Tobias/Toby
Reuben
Rory
James
Benjamin

Reception class teacher here - Reuben, Rory and Toby are becoming more common.

Love Daniel, not many of those about.

RavenWings · 07/08/2018 19:15

Samson - wouldn't have struck me as overly traditional tbqh. It's Biblical but has more of a modern, millenial name to me. Fits in with the current gen of Arlo etc. I'm not against it but think it needs a certain type of boy to carry it off.

Benjamin, Toby, Reuben, Rory - I don't think you would have loads of these but very possible to have another in the class.

For less popular traditional names I'd be thinking about things like Joseph, Anthony, Stephen, Martin, Alan...

daisypond · 07/08/2018 19:16

I like Rory and James particularly.
Tobias and Benjamin are both nice as well.
Samson and Reuben aren't classic.

ReginaPhalange89 · 07/08/2018 19:16

I personally don't know any kids with those names so I don't think they're too common. I've always loved Rueben and you could use Roo as a cute baby NN.

Also like Toby and Ben ! Only one I'm not too keen on is Samson but I do love Sam!

sexnotgender · 07/08/2018 19:16

Daniel is high on my list. Love it!

DC2018 · 07/08/2018 19:17

My fave is Benjamin. Its lovely, traditional but not too common. Ben and Benji are also lovely nn.
I also really love Tobias and Toby as a nn. Really like Rory and James. Not too keen on Samson or Reuben x

ReginaPhalange89 · 07/08/2018 19:19

I also like Daniel and Matthew for traditional names. And Tom!

MySerenity · 07/08/2018 19:24

Thanks for the feedback and ideas- liking Daniel as a suggestion. Also love Matthew, but that's the father's name so might use it as a middle name.

Daniel, Matthew and James were on my shortlist for DS born in March. Went with Daniel in the end and love it.

Undercoverbanana · 07/08/2018 19:28

Love traditional names.

Peter
Andrew
Christopher
Nicholas

Fabricwitch · 07/08/2018 19:32

I was going to suggest Tobias and Benjamin before even reading your list. I really like those!

EduCated · 07/08/2018 19:32

Michael
Nathan
Aaron
William
Gregory
Richard
Marcus

Toby has been verrrrry popular round here for the past few years.

Nix32 · 07/08/2018 19:34

I've got a William - only one other in his school.

Thesearmsofmine · 07/08/2018 19:35

What about Samuel instead of Samson? I like the name Sam for a little boy and it’s not overly common now.

Rueben and Toby are definitely getting more popular.

SorenLorensonsInvisibleFriend · 07/08/2018 19:35

Don't know many little Davids these days, if that helps. I love the names Daniel and Matthew and Stephen. James was the first I thought of when I read the thread title.

RosyPP · 07/08/2018 19:38

What about John? I totally love it and wanted it for DS

Btw I know two each of children called Reuben & Toby

Good luck Smile

MikeUniformMike · 07/08/2018 19:38

Samson - Maybe if you're Cornish but Samuel is better as it doesn;t fall into Jaxon, Harrison, Jenson territory
Tobias/Toby - nice but not unusual
Reuben - Too popular and wet sounding
Rory - Fine
James - Love it . Goes with most surnames.
Benjamin - Like it

I like Peter, Andrew, Nick, Matthew etc too.

ThunderR0ad78 · 07/08/2018 19:39

My short list for boys were:

Edward
James
Matthew
Thomas
Joseph

Went with James Edward in the end but equally love the others.....Edward is lovely name that I haven't seen mentioned as yet in your thread (may have missed it though).

Good luck!

sickmumma · 07/08/2018 19:44

James and Ben are very popular atm! DS (who is named Oliver which was the number 1 name at the time but surprisingly no more in his year!) has 2 bens and 2 James's in his class!

MrsRachel85 · 07/08/2018 19:46

If you like Benjamin but want something less common how about Benedict?
