Boys names- something classic but not too common

We're struggling to agree on boys names for our baby. We've settled on a girl's first name already. We would like something that sounds classic/traditional, but that there won't be 5 of them in their class! Would love some feedback on our current front-runners:

Samson
Tobias/Toby
Reuben
Rory
James
Benjamin

Russell?

MorrisDancingViv · 07/08/2018 19:55

At a playgroup I go to, the children sing a song and introduce themselves. 3/4 of the boys are James, Alexander or Benjamin. There's also a couple of Toby's.

Dominic
Henry
Jonathan
Lucas

Sebastian or Evan ?

MrStarkIDontFeelSoGood · 07/08/2018 19:59

Forgot Andrew there were about 4 and it's quite uncommon as a baby name now, though last time I said it someone here told me that's what they went for with their baby !

Violetparis · 07/08/2018 20:01

Julian ?

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 07/08/2018 20:04

How about Hugh, Jonathan, Guy, Nathaniel, Wilfred, Ivo or Edmund?

flumpybear · 07/08/2018 20:08

We went for Cameron
How about Sebastian, Nathaniel, Andrew

ShadowKitty · 07/08/2018 20:19

I've got a Robert and people have commented on it being unusual for a baby.

He's Bobby at the moment but you can obvs use Robbie, Rob, Bob, Bobby or even Bertie?

Smoliver · 07/08/2018 20:21

Samson is nice but doesn't strike me as traditional. I like Rory, James and Tobias from your list too.

Other suggestions...
Joseph
Sebastian
Jonathan
Dominic - met a young boy called this the other day - very cute!
Patrick

AnyaMoondial · 07/08/2018 20:23

Benjamin Matthew sounds good to me.

sexnotgender · 07/08/2018 20:54

Ive already mentioned Daniel which is high on my list.
Other top contenders are Francis and Rowan.

Threeandabit · 08/08/2018 07:56

I like all of them. The trouble is you can get little pockets of popularity with names, so a name might not be that popular nationally but there could still be a few locally.

What about: -

Saul
Ross
Joel
Judd

Dominic
Nicholas
Miles
Gregory

Bouledeneige · 08/08/2018 08:14

I like Reuben and Tobias.

What about
Hamish
Matthew
Adam
Ross
Leo
Sebastian

auntyflonono · 08/08/2018 08:18

Ezra

PaulMorel · 08/08/2018 08:18

Theodor would be nice. Very classic.

lastnamefirstfirstnamelast · 08/08/2018 08:29

Fredrick
Joel
Bradley/Bobby are cute but classic

Sevendown · 08/08/2018 08:37

Walter
Stanley
Luke
Matthew
Bruce
Percy
Howard

Shamelessly hijacking as I'm after the same sort of name.

DS1 is Benjamin (called Ben day to day though), and DS2 due any day now.

We did consider Benedict for DS1 so as a pp suggested it's an option if you like Ben but want something less common (although I've yet to meet a similar aged Ben - he's 1yr old).

My current list includes:
Thomas (although we have two friends whose DS have this name, and one of the mums has the same first name as me).
Samuel (although my DSis knows two people with boys called Ben with brothers called Samuel).
Charles/Charlie
Edward
Timothy

DH vetoed Noah and Sebastian 😢

Not a fan of the Michael/Stephen/Paul variety as they're names of boys I went to school with and they feel a bit dated (showing my age 😳🤣🤣).

FASH84 · 08/08/2018 21:14

This is the exact dilemma we're having at the moment. DH is a James so that's out , DB is a Matthew, awful ex is Daniel, cousin's son is Thomas. It's so difficult with boys!

AtticaRose · 09/08/2018 12:11

"Traditional" names from rank 50-250 in 2016, in rank order. (My own judgement on "trad", of course!)

Some of your list are quite popular or becoming so but are nice names.
I also don't think Samson fits in the same bracket.

I'd suggest :
Gregory
Marcus
Benedict
Sylvester
Lawrence
Blair
Aaron

sonnyboo · 09/08/2018 16:40

Nathan
Quentin
Magnus

LeeMiller · 09/08/2018 17:03

I know several baby Benjamins so not sure it's that uncommon now, though it's a lovely name. Same with James. Samson and Reuben aren't classic. Toby sounds a bit wet, Tobias is nicer.

Laurence/Lawrence
Johnathon
Joseph

Edmund
Elliott
Albert
Charles
Frederick

Robert

Walter
