Hiya :) I don’t see anything wrong with naming your daughter Dawn, I have an auntie named Dawn and a friend named Dawn, some may say it’s old fashioned or “not common” but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Some people didn’t like the name I chose for my first, or the name I have chosen for my second, but it didn’t stop me and many people loved both name choices. At the end of the day it’s your decision, don’t pick a name you aren’t keen on just to make other people approve, saying that.. I still don’t think there is anything wrong with the name Dawn :)

SnuggyBuggy · 03/08/2018 07:37

I like Dawn. It's not the most popular name but it's not dated.

StrawberryCat · 03/08/2018 07:50

My initial reaction was that i don't like it, but i think that's only because i was at school with a Dawn who wasn't very nice! The more i think about it the more it strikes me as being quite pretty! And it's sooooo refreshing from all the Olivias and Isobels!!

bridgetreilly · 03/08/2018 08:36

I feel like it's a name I ought to like more than I really do. One of my best friends is a Dawn, and so it does have positive associations for me, and I like the meaning. Plus it's short, easy to spell and pronounce, and there won't be hundreds of them around.

I just... don't really like it. Sorry.

Justmuddlingalong · 03/08/2018 08:41

I had a friend called Dawn at school. The phrase 'up the crack of Dawn' gave the boys hours of amusement. So, for that reason alone, it's a no from me.

LeeMiller · 03/08/2018 08:43

It's quite 70s/80s. The meaning is nice.

Whyisitnotcompulsory · 03/08/2018 09:03

It's a lovely name

NoSixPlease · 03/08/2018 09:19

It reminds me of the character in Buffy who was boring so ended up being called Yawn. Also 'up at the crack of Dawn', which in our house has morphed into 'up at Dawn's crack. Dawn must be livid'.
But that's just me and my weird family. I think it's a perfectly lovely name, we just associate it with those things. If you like it, use it!

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 03/08/2018 10:19

I like it as a middle name.

Disfordarkchocolate · 03/08/2018 10:24

I think it's lovely. Not common and very pretty. There's one in my family and 'crack of dawn' never crossed my mind.

n0ne · 03/08/2018 10:26

I want to love it as the meaning is gorgeous, but it conjures up images of someone boring, frumpy and a bit dim for some reason. I know that's totally U Blush

ReevaDiva · 03/08/2018 10:29

Agree with PPs: it should be lovely but somehow it's just lumpen and drab.

Emma765 · 03/08/2018 10:33

Makes me think of Gavin and Stacey and instant reaction was that I didn't like it, but then when I think about it it's really quite pretty and has a lovely meaning so unsure why my first reaction was negative!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 03/08/2018 11:00

Same here Emma

"Hows's my little Dawny" Grin

villainousbroodmare · 03/08/2018 11:06

Like others, I feel like I should like it, but I don't. I think the reason for the mixed feelings is that it describes something beautiful, the sun rising, but it's not a very attractive sound and rhymes with dull or unpleasant words like yawn, spawn, fawn. But I wouldn't feel the same about e.g. Seán... odd.

kenandbarbie · 03/08/2018 11:07

I think of it being someone in their 50s

RedDwarves · 03/08/2018 11:12

Dawn Fraser. One of Australia's greatest swimmers, and also a prolific racist.

It's a no from me.

Also, agree that it fits in with Barbara, Margaret et al.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 03/08/2018 11:29

It's not offensive but to me it's a bit dull and very dated.

strawberrypenguin · 03/08/2018 11:31

Buffy for me. It's not my favourite but it's inoffensive.

worstmotherintheworld · 03/08/2018 11:34

Not for me, I think it sounds really dull and a bit drippy. The meaning is nice but it doesn't sound good.

MadisonAvenue · 03/08/2018 11:37

Sorry, I'm another who thinks it's dull and dated. It's my sister's middle name and she was born in the late 50s.

Fluffiest · 03/08/2018 11:41

My initial reaction was the same as the above posters. But it is a good name, maybe time for a new generation of Dawn's to reclaim it. I think I would feel differently about a little girl caked Dawn - sweet, than a grown woman called Dawn - a bit mean.

MikeUniformMike · 03/08/2018 11:44

I think it's fine.
the crack of dawn comments might be a PITA.
You could use Alba, Aurora or Oriana if it's the meaning you like.

daisypond · 03/08/2018 15:52

Not sure. I think it was probably lovely and unusual when first used a few decades ago, but it now just seems dated to me.

Agustarella · 04/08/2018 16:58

Working class 1960s name. Will have to wait a few decades to be fashionably retro like Elsie etc.
