Not keen on it tbh

Acceptableinthe80ss · 04/08/2018 23:58

I like it as a middle name!

Redteapot67 · 05/08/2018 00:00

It’s ok
How about Gloria if you are looking for something slightly retro but still cute

SurvivedTheirTeens · 05/08/2018 00:05

My father's second wife. So a no from me.

Marcipex · 05/08/2018 00:06

The crack of Dawn comments make it a no from me.

If you like the meaning, how about Soleil, Roxanne, Aurora.

If you want a short name, Ruth,Anne,Jane, Jill, Fay.

Rosalie Dawn

I love it.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 05/08/2018 13:28

I feel like a PP - I feel I should like it but I don't. Reckon it got overused in the 60s/70s.

Zoe has the same meaning, I believe.

MinaPaws · 05/08/2018 13:29

Lovely meaning but ugly word and all those 'Rosy fingered Dawn/up the crack of Dawn' jokes are fodder for bullying.

How about Aurora? Means the same but is prettier and avoids all the horrible puns.

MadMaryBoddington · 05/08/2018 13:34

I think it’s a nice middle name.

TatianaLarina · 05/08/2018 13:44

It’s very class specific. And dated. 100% 80s chav.

mastertomsmum · 05/08/2018 13:45

Hmm, speaking as one who grew up in the 70s it was not an especially widely used name. Yes, a bit of it’s time but not like Sharon, Tracey, Debra or the other popular ones Karen and Linda. Also tons better than Maureen, Pauline and other dull 50s names.

In the 6th form we had an Oriana and that was a much more teasewothy name than Dawn.

Not back in fashion yet is an advantage and the current wave of fashionable is great or great great grandma names I thought horrid when young - Enid, Ada, Vera, Elsie.

My mother was horrified when a possible name for our daughter was Stella. To me it sounded slightly glam and quite cultured to my mum it was great grandma

Lynne1Cat · 05/08/2018 13:47

I wanted that for both my children, but then I had boys (in the days before scans to reveal the gender) in the 80s.

I also liked Jade, but instead I had Mark and Shaun

Lynne1Cat · 05/08/2018 13:48

mastertomsmum..... I had a cat called Stella. She was petite, pretty, and very cute.

Lynne1Cat · 05/08/2018 13:50

agustarella.... nothing wrong with working class! By the way, I had 2 aunties named Elsie... both working class too

RavenWings · 05/08/2018 14:27

I agree with other people that in theory it's something I'd like but in reality it's awful. Drippy and wet.

threesenoughthanks · 05/08/2018 14:49

It's my middle name ( a 70's child ) and I've never really liked it.

Agustarella · 05/08/2018 15:50

@Lynne1Cat You are right, but my thinking is that it's wisest to give names which are class-neutral. Too much snobbery and inverted snobbery to risk being called Lacey-Mae or Araminta. (Or insert whichever names are chavvy or posh respectively.) Obviously names can change their class associations over generations but I don't think Dawn is quite neutral enough yet.

OlennasWimple · 05/08/2018 15:59

Rosalie Dawn is nice

Agustarella · 05/08/2018 17:30

Rosalie Dawn sounds like 'rosy-fingered Dawn' in Homer. Not bad, just a bit odd-sounding maybe?

LadyHooHa · 05/08/2018 17:34

As TatianaLarina says. There were lots of girls called Dawn who worked for my Dad in the 70s/80s. They were particular 'types'.

MikeUniformMike · 05/08/2018 18:50

I know a Dawn. A 1970s child. Don't like her.

Carrotmama · 05/08/2018 18:52

The baby in Trainspotting was called Dawn. This puts me off an otherwise lovely name.

VictoriaOKeefe · 06/08/2018 09:05

going by the feedback, Dawn is better as a middle name. Rebecca Dawn, Olivia Dawn etc.
