Ruairi correct pronunciation?

Mushypea888 · 03/08/2018 03:43

Our new baby is to be called ruairi but we have heard several ways to say it.
OH family is Irish but even they can't agree!
I'm told definitely not "Roar ee" like story unless in southern Ireland
OH thinks it should be more rur-ee like ggrrr, rolling the u sound
MIL thinks more like Roo-ree as in "kangaroo"

Anybody else got a ruairi in the family? Our other boy is a red head so we hope this name will fit our new arrival perfectly.

Which way do you prefer and use that.

junebirthdaygirl · 03/08/2018 04:00

I'm lrish. I would go for your dhs version. Its lrish for Rory. Lovely name.

Ca55andraMortmain · 03/08/2018 04:10

I'm Scottish but assuming it's the same pronounciation as Ruairidh I would say it's like brewery without the B!

JustHavinABreak · 03/08/2018 04:13

I'm Irish too with a Ruairi in the family and your OH is right!

weeonion18 · 03/08/2018 04:23

I'm irish and pronounce it like yr oh.

Lovely name.

BunnyBath · 03/08/2018 06:30

It's Roo-ree, because it's the Irisy spelling. It would only rhyme with story if it were spelt Rory.

laptopdisaster · 03/08/2018 06:31

On the Archers they say R-eurgh-ree

BunnyBath · 03/08/2018 06:31

Though reading back, OH's pronounciation is even better than MIL's - I missed that bit! It's hard to describe Irish phonetically!

strawberrry · 03/08/2018 06:32

Exactly as @Ca55andraMortmain said, brewery without the b. Gorgeous name!

Mushypea888 · 03/08/2018 06:33

Thanks for the replies, nice to see i wasn't the only one up at this hour pondering fairly random topics.. .Im English so I'm being led by by OH in this matter! I find the rur-ee (as in grr-ee) the hardest with my Somerset accent so will have to get some practice in.I know this name will stump my English family at first so wanted to get this settled before the big day.
We wernt going to find out gender but he flashed his bits at a late growth scan last week before the sonographer could warn us so no doubt it's Ruairi!

I am Scottish and would pronounce it Roo-ray.

ReevaDiva · 03/08/2018 08:25

I'm Scottish and say Roo-ree

Alex3101 · 03/08/2018 08:35

Our DS is Ruairí and we pronounce it Rooree

Mushypea888 · 03/08/2018 08:48

Gosh it's not a straightforward choice !

I'm in Scotland and would say Roo-Ree. It's a fairly common spelling of the name here. More common is the anglicised Rory, pronounced Roar-y

Alex3101 · 03/08/2018 09:18

Are you going to put the Fada on the last i
That changes the way it would be pronounced. That's what gives it the ee sound.

Sparklyshoes16 · 03/08/2018 09:22

My husband is Irish go with your OH Smile

dinosaurkisses · 03/08/2018 09:23

DH is from Dublin and he says Roo-ree.

I’m from Belfast and I pronounce it Rurr-ee, like fury but with an R.

YeTalkShiteHen · 03/08/2018 09:26

Roo-ree here (Scottish)

mikado1 · 03/08/2018 09:27

It's Roor-ee but not quite like roo but more to rhyme with moor. Does that make sense? Rory is different.

Powerless · 03/08/2018 09:28

Rer-air-ri

mikado1 · 03/08/2018 09:29

Yes brewery is a good rhyme too. Lovely name. Congrats!

PamsterWheel · 03/08/2018 09:34

Why pick a name you don't know how to pronounce?

eurochick · 03/08/2018 09:45
