Eilidh or Eimear?

I also like Caitriona.

Middle name will be Mary.

We're in Glasgow, strong Irish contingent among friends and family so I don't see many pronunciation difficulties coming up.

I know the first one is 'Ayley' but how do you say the second?

AtticaRose · 02/08/2018 17:01

I like Eilidh best, but perhaps Caitriona or Eimear is nicer with Mary...

All lovely though!

MoisturisingMoon · 02/08/2018 17:02

Ee-mer.

Caitriona should technically have a fada I think, which annoys my pernickity side!

Eilidh every time although I also like Caitriona

PureColdWind · 02/08/2018 17:11

Eilidh is nice. I think Eimear and Catriona are a bit out of date. They are names you associate more with people in their 30's or 40's.

nellyolsenscurl · 02/08/2018 17:14

Second the poster who said Eimear is dated. Eilidh is lovely, but combined with the middle name sounds Cockney for Hail Mary.

MoisturisingMoon · 02/08/2018 17:20

Eilidh Mary is a bit of a mouthful. We won't use Mary often, it's just to honour an aunt.

I like the sound of them all. I don't know anyone under 25 called either name... that doesn't really bother me.

Boys names were much easier!

Eimear

Glumglowworm · 02/08/2018 17:34

I really love Eilidh

n0ne · 02/08/2018 17:47

I know a little Eimear, her mum is from NI. I'd not heard it before her, tbh. Eilidh is a gorgeous choice too.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 02/08/2018 17:49

I know a grown up Eimear-she is Irish but lives in England.

She pronounces it E-ma

MikeUniformMike · 02/08/2018 18:04

Eilidh is nice. Could you use Mhairi, Marie or Maria as a middle name?

MoisturisingMoon · 02/08/2018 18:12

Eilidh Marie is too wafty, I think.

DH quite likes Maria as a first name tbh. Now that sounds dated to me.

I think Eimear Mary is fabulous, rolls off the tongue really nicely! I know of 4 girls named Eimear/Emer under 20,so it doesn't seem dated to me at all.

MikeUniformMike · 02/08/2018 18:55

I like Maria, mainly because the Marias I know are nice.
Eilidh Marie is a bit wafty but Eilidh Maria is nice. Do you have a scottish surname?

MoisturisingMoon · 02/08/2018 19:04

We've a Mc surname, yes.

Thank you all for your opinions, most appreciated.

MikeUniformMike · 02/08/2018 19:06

Eimear Mary McMoon is a lot of Ms and possibly Rs. Nice though.

LJdorothy · 02/08/2018 19:08

Eilidh Mary really doesn't work. Put another name in between...like Rose or Grace or something else with one syllable and it will be lovely.

Imfinehowareyou · 02/08/2018 19:14

I adore the name Eilidh and really wanted it for DD but I'm not Scottish and knew it would be mispronounced all the time in England (eye lid). Jealous you get to use it!

kenandbarbie · 02/08/2018 19:14

I like caitriona

florascotia2 · 02/08/2018 19:21

OP Popularity may not be an issue, but Eilidh is much more popular in Scotland than Eimear or Caitriona. Almost top 20, in fact (ranks no 21 in the Scottish government' official list for 2017): www.nrscotland.gov.uk/filesstatistics/babies-names/2017/babies-first-names-17-tab-5.pdf

But they are all nice names.

mavydoes · 02/08/2018 19:23

My daughter is Eilidh Grace and we are Glasgow too - no issues with saying it.

YaLoVeras · 02/08/2018 19:24

I like Eimear best but it's dated if that matters. I don't know an Eimear under 35

Maybe only in Ireland. Maybe not dated in Scotland.

MoisturisingMoon · 02/08/2018 19:26

I've only met Irish Eimears! I don't know any baby girl Eilidhs either though.
