Here’s my current shortlist for DC3 (a boy). Would you know how to say these if you saw them written down, or spell them if you heard them? All opinions welcome, I’m not easily offended!

Alden
Ansel
Atticus
Augustus (Gus)
Orion
Orson

Would they 'go' with your other children's names?

Foodylicious · 31/07/2018 07:33

Can you share your other dc names?
That might make it easier

Icklepup · 31/07/2018 07:34

I would know how to spell them.
Orson sounds like awesome if you say it quick.

Kraggle · 31/07/2018 07:34

I’d know how to say/spell all of them. I don’t think you need to worry about that.

imsorryiasked · 31/07/2018 07:34

I've never heard of Alden, the others are ok. I know three Orson's. My favourite is Ansel.

YaLoVeras · 31/07/2018 07:35

Well Gus certainly isnt. Id do Fergus / Gus. I could see that but Orion is a car to 90% of people!
Alden sounds Girl to me
Ansel sounds like Answer
Atticus - sigh. Better be human rights activists with a love of American literature.

YaLoVeras · 31/07/2018 07:36

PS yeh would love to know yr first two sons' names

unadventuretime · 31/07/2018 07:38

Orson is ok (as long as your surname isn't Cart or Field or Hay or anything else horsey Grin) and so is Gus. What about Fergus? Angus? Magnus? The others are a bit out there, Orion is a bit cringey I think.

BBQueen · 31/07/2018 07:42

My first two DC are girls and both have names from Greek mythology (one is also a car name if that gives you a clue, the other is a popular song by the Police). I’m not worried about the names all going in terms of origin/sound but I do like names that have a history and aren’t too commonly used at the moment.

Thanks for the feedback so far, I was half expecting a slating!

augustus is the best known out of them, followed by Atticus. Never heard of Alden. Although unusual, they’re not weird. Ie. Spelt how they sound.

If other dcs are George, Henry etc, they would be little out there. If dc1 and dc2 were Persophene and Hermoniane (sp?), then maybe not so.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 31/07/2018 07:43

Agree Gus is not out there at all because of the Guses from Fergus, Angus, Augustus.

Orion would say either “yeah like the car” or “no, not Ryan”

Not keen on orson, Alden.

I quite like Atticus, I think it’s grown on me as it’s an mn favourite. But I wouldn’t use it as I’d be worried about Atti - Hattie with no H.

Any others on your list?

BBQueen · 31/07/2018 07:49

@ThroughThickAndThin01 - the others on my list are a bit more sedate - Peter, Raymond and Andrew. I just wanted to sense check those that are a bit more “edgy” as I don’t think anyone would really take offence to these!

Good point about the likeliness of people assuming Orion is Ryan. I guess Ryan is an OK name too though if people do end up using that instead!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 31/07/2018 07:51

Drew for Andrew would be nice. Bit different. But then I suppose you may as well have Augustus/Gus.

BikeRunSki · 31/07/2018 07:52

Alden - I know one. His mum spends a lot of time saying “no, not Auden”.
Ansel - like it, but would spell Ansell after the photographer
Augustus - prefer Angus or Fergus to get abbreviation Gus
Orion - like it, I don’t immediately think of the cars (which hasn’t been made for 25 years)
Orson - Love it

butlerswharf · 31/07/2018 08:00

Atticus, Augustus and in particular Orson are bordering on popular where I live so definitely not too out there. Smile

BBQueen · 31/07/2018 08:04

I haven’t met any Orsons yet, so it’s really useful to know it’s a popular name elsewhere. I can’t believe Atticus and Augustus are also being used (though I guess there’s a reason they’ve come up as ideas for me!)

Augustus? As in Gloop?

I quite like Atticus but I think it's the connotations rather than the actual name.

What about Oran?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 31/07/2018 09:30

Not Orion, given one of your DDS names!
Ford Orion.

Rex
Magnus
Gulliver
Woody
Cassius
Otto

sonnyboo · 31/07/2018 13:58

Love them all apart from Augustus. Prefer August.

kenandbarbie · 31/07/2018 14:19

I don't really like Orion ('s belt) but the others are all easy to pronounce and are quite nice. Maybe not Atticus (Finch).

kenandbarbie · 31/07/2018 14:21

I especially like Alden, I've never heard of it before, where does it come from?

MikeUniformMike · 31/07/2018 14:27

Alden - sounds too much like Olden
Ansel - and Gretel
Atticus - Mum has read one book. At school cos she had to.
Augustus (Gus) - Good
Orion - Clapped out old Ford
Orson - Welles. Cart. Carriage.

MikeUniformMike · 31/07/2018 14:29

Peter and Raymond are both great. Andrew is fine but will be shortened to Andy. Don't like Drew. I'd go with Raymond.

WooYa · 31/07/2018 14:30

I love Atticus!

RightYesButNo · 31/07/2018 14:43

@BikeRunSki Do you mean Ansel Adams? If so, his name is spelled with one L, like the name OP is considering.
