Romilly

I’ve never met a Romilly or even heard of one in real life. I’d never actually heard of the name until I saw it on here, and I’m not even 100% sure how it’s pronounced.

Yet it’s suggested all the time by posters on here - if an OP lists a few names they like of the Florence/Lily/Bethany variety, a MNer is sure to jump in with ‘what about Romilly?’

Is it just me who’s never heard of this name? Are there any other names that you have never come across but are often floated on MN?

To me it's a park and a school and I'd never, ever use it for a child. But I grew up in Barry.

RedDwarves · 22/07/2018 22:53

Never met someone with the name. I have known a couple of Romys though - just Romy, not short for anything. One pronounces it "Rommy", the other "Roe-me".

Romilly Weeks tv presenter

IVflytrap · 23/07/2018 00:40

I heard Romilly in the wild for the first time about a month ago. I knew it was a (rare) name before that though.

Ottilie, on the other hand... I'm still not entirely convinced this one wasn't made up by MN. Grin Never heard of it til I found this board, am yet to see it mentioned in real life in any capacity...

I have a Romilly who is known as
Romy for short. We pronounce it Ro-milly and Rom-ee. I always liked the name Romy - my first boss named his daughter that. I also like Romy Schneider. When I was pregnant with my son the name Romilly popped a few times and I really liked it. Then when I found out I was having a girl next it was always going to be that.

gracieandharrietxo · 23/07/2018 01:00

I like it, but perhaps spelt different? Such as Roma-Lee? Depends on the pronounciation. Good luck!

FannyCornforth · 23/07/2018 01:16

Romilly is a really beautiful name. Well done! Stick with the traditional spelling.
You can't call a child Roma-Lee. It would be like calling a girl Gypsy-Kev, or Traveller-Gary.

HeyDolly · 23/07/2018 02:17

I went to school with one plus there is Romilly Weeks as a pp said.

I pronounce it Rom-ill-e

It was on my list for DD2 but DH hates it!

FannyCornforth · 23/07/2018 02:22

Yes, Dolly, I'd pronounce it with 'o' as in orange, not 'o' as in old.

Johnlewisgaddis · 23/07/2018 06:51

@IVflytrap

Ooh I’ve met an Ottilie - just the one though, and it was about 20 years ago! If it wasn’t for her I’d also doubt the name’s existence.

I know a Romilly she’s 2 and her sister has an equally unusual name.
I had heard of Romilly before this little girl i was thinking about it as a middle name for my dd.

Bue · 23/07/2018 07:03

I have a 3 year old one. I did think it was a bit more well known before we named her- I obviously spend too much time on MN!! It is definitely not common though- according to ONS about 40 are born every year in England and Wales. That is not very many people!

The closest we have come to meeting another real life one was my SIL meeting a child at a birthday party last year. She and said child were both very excited!

Bue · 23/07/2018 07:05

Actually scrap that, we have met one IRL- DH taught one. That is where we originally got the name. Plus Romilly Weeks.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 23/07/2018 07:33

Roma-Lee! God no.

Romilly is lovely.

TwoGinScentedTears · 23/07/2018 07:43

I know a grown up Romily and a baby Ottille. Gorgeous names, both of them.

Cosmoa · 23/07/2018 07:55

It was the name of my midwife and I think about it often. And how I wish I had used it as a second middle name for my daughter because of how lovely she was. Plus I adore the name! If I had still been unsure on a name for my daughter I would have called her Romilly for certain!

Cosmoa · 23/07/2018 07:58

In fact if I ever have another girl I think I'd call her Romilly!

SellFridges · 23/07/2018 07:58

We have a seven year old Romilly. She’s frequently known as Rom for short now, but we imagined she’d be Romy.

We haven’t met any others, but we’re aware of one other a couple of schools over.

Immigrantsong · 23/07/2018 07:59

Sorry horrible name

IncidentalAnarchist · 23/07/2018 08:01

It’s an area of an unpleasant town called Stockport. So a massive no from me.

jhb2013 · 23/07/2018 08:02

I think it’s spelt Romelle.
Ottilie is a lovely name, we were going to name DD2 Ottilie but already have a Tilly in the family. I know a couple of Ottilie’s, often Ottie or Tilly for short.

Highpeak · 23/07/2018 08:06

Stockport suburb for me too. Sounds odd as a name (Romiley but same pronunciation)

QueenOfMyWorld · 23/07/2018 08:06

I worked with someone called Romany, now thats a lovely name

Cosmoa · 23/07/2018 09:17

I live in Manchester and had no idea there was a Romilly in Stockport! 😂
