Romilly

I’ve never met a Romilly or even heard of one in real life. I’d never actually heard of the name until I saw it on here, and I’m not even 100% sure how it’s pronounced.

Yet it’s suggested all the time by posters on here - if an OP lists a few names they like of the Florence/Lily/Bethany variety, a MNer is sure to jump in with ‘what about Romilly?’

Is it just me who’s never heard of this name? Are there any other names that you have never come across but are often floated on MN?

Romiley is in Stockport not Romilly Smile

IncidentalAnarchist · 23/07/2018 10:27

The spelling is different but the pronunciation is the same hence the link :)

I love the name but Romilly Weeks is a friend of my sister, so it was ‘taken’.

Such as Roma-Lee?

😱

Cosmoa · 23/07/2018 11:46

Ahh okay! I could have sworn my Manchester based midwifes name was spelt Romiley yanno! I thought that was the proper spelling until I saw it spelt Romilly on here so many times.

It’s a lovely name - but we couldn’t use it as we are from Stockport. Which btw is a really nice town!

MikeUniformMike · 23/07/2018 16:30

I think it looks like a surname. Maybe a war general or something.
The Rom bit makes me thing of read only memory.
Don't like it as agirl's name but Ottilie is worse.

TroubledLichen · 23/07/2018 17:23

Ottilie is DD’s middle name, DH wouldn’t let me use it as her first name and I’ve never quite forgiven him. Never met another. My (not English) MIL was convinced I’d made it up though! I’ve also never met a Romilly but with the amount it gets mentioned I wouldn’t be surprised if it 4 years time there aren’t multiples in every reception class.

Susannach · 23/07/2018 17:37

I know two Romillys and more Ottilies. The Ottilies are all under 10 but I know one adult and one young Romilly.

IncidentalAnarchist · 23/07/2018 18:00

And I do also know a Romilly spelled Romiley. All the wrong!!!

delphguelph · 23/07/2018 18:04

He was the one who married Decca Mitford.

(don't say, who????)

daisypond · 23/07/2018 18:07

I know a Romilly who's in her 50s.

jamtastic99 · 23/07/2018 18:14

I think Romilly is quite a pretty name, but for some reason I associate it with a place.

I have an Ottilie and love it. Wasn't a Mumsnet user at the time and had heard of an elderly lady called it many years ago and it stuck with me. Didn't know of any others in my area, but suddenly another 3 seem to have popped up in the last year or so!

WaitrosePigeon · 23/07/2018 19:56

I love it

AlliKaneErikson · 24/07/2018 07:57

I know a Romilly and a Romy. I agree, though, there are loads of names mentioned frequently here that are very rare in real life.

dw23 · 24/07/2018 16:02

I definitely discovered this name from the reporter Romilly Weeks and then I moved to Cardiff and a lot of places/schools/streets/pubs etc are called Romilly after Sir Samuel Romilly I believe.... and now one of the GPs at my local practice is called Romilly which is the reason my husband has veto'd it :(

Ottilie was a character in a Penny Vincenzi novel I read as a teenager and was obsessed with for a while.

dw23 · 24/07/2018 16:03

Oh and I say Romilly as rhyming with homily...

Mousefunky · 24/07/2018 17:06

I know one but she shortens it to Romy. I quite like it.
