We already have boys with traditional classic (some might say boring) names James, Edward, William, Richard type thing.

Expecting a girl. What name should we go for? I like:

Isobel
Imogen
Elinor
Lilian
Imogen
Isolde
Iseult
Beatrice
Violet
Elsie
Evelyn
Iris
Leonora
Leonore

Imogen, but I'm biased

AriaMontgom · 20/07/2018 20:18

Imogen sounds lovely with your type of boys names

AnyaMoondial · 20/07/2018 20:26

Beatrice. It's just perfect. And bea is a great nn.

HJL2506 · 20/07/2018 20:38

Violet is my favourite girls name.

Iris second.

Jillyjollyjandy · 20/07/2018 20:40

Beatrice.

IggyAce · 20/07/2018 20:42

Imogen but I'm biased or Beatrice.

cheaperthebetter · 20/07/2018 20:44

Elinor goes well with Edward, William and Richard

cheaperthebetter · 20/07/2018 20:45

Violet goes well with James, William and Richard

finallychangedmyusername · 20/07/2018 20:53

Elinor! Beautiful name

finallychangedmyusername · 20/07/2018 20:54

Although I suspect you want a little Imogen (also a great name) as you've listed her twice!

Sophronia · 20/07/2018 22:53

Beatrice or Leonora

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 20/07/2018 23:08

Isobel of Elin.

bridgetreilly · 21/07/2018 01:51

I like everything on your list except Isolde, Iseult, Leonora and Leonore.

Elphabaisnotwicked · 21/07/2018 02:07

How is Isolde pronounced please?

RedDwarves · 21/07/2018 08:01

I love the following:
Lilian - But prefer Lillian, and think that this is how many people would presume to spell it.

Violet

Leonora

Like the following:
Imogen

Elinor - And prefer this spelling to the usual Eleanor

Elsie

Not a fan of the following:
Isobel - Much prefer Isabella. I don't like the "bel" ending.

Isolde - Looks nice, but I don't like the pronunciation and it'll get "is-old" all the time.

Iseult - See above, but multiply misspellings/mispronunciations by forty.

Beatrice - Never seen the appeal of this.

Evelyn - See above.

Iris - Reminds me of eyes and ugly flowers.

Leonore - Prefer Leonora.

TatianaLarina · 21/07/2018 08:04

I love Imogen, Iseult, Beatrice, Violet, Iris - you’ve got a great selection right there. I’d ditch the others.

Icklepup · 21/07/2018 09:13

Violet!

Sessy19 · 21/07/2018 09:26

Isolde- IZ-old-uh

I think this is a BEAUTIFUL name. Girls names don’t need to ‘go’ with their brothers’ names....just choose the one you see when she’s born 😊

Sessy19 · 21/07/2018 09:28

To PP, in French it’s IZ-Old, but the British pronounciation is Iz-Old-Uh

dinosaurkisses · 21/07/2018 09:35

Iseult is v high up our list for DC2 if it’s a girl- intention is to use the nn Sully. We’re in Ireland though so it’s a bit more widely used.

Elinor is just beautiful- it’s on my middle name list!

heateallthebuns · 21/07/2018 10:03

If your name was Helena, would it be weird to call your daughter Elinor?

OP posts:
Sugarpiehoneyeye · 21/07/2018 11:08

Not at all.😄

TatianaLarina · 21/07/2018 11:15

the British pronounciation is Iz-Old-Uh

No that’s the German pronunciation.

Y/Iseult is the original Anglo-Norman name. It was Germanised as Isolde, which pronounces the e.

BegoniasAndPetunias · 21/07/2018 11:19

If your name was Helena, would it be weird to call your daughter Elinor?

Depends how you pronounce it.

If it's pronounced Ellen-uh, then that would be a little odd.

But if you're pronouncing it El-i-NOR, then I think it's fine.

So although I prefer the Eleanor spelling, I think the Elinor works better for you.

TatianaLarina · 21/07/2018 11:19

Yes. It’s almost the same, and will lead to endless confusion.

Elinor is awful anyway, Helena is very nice.
