Are these names too much?

Evangeline
Esmeralda
Rowena
Rosemary
Arabella

I love long feminine names but I'm not sure if we are brave enough to use them. The above are the favourites but are they too much? Does anyone know any, what are their nicknames?

Evangeline was on our list for DD but went for something else instead Smile
I like arabella too, but have met a few in recent years - nicknamed Bella

carebea · 15/07/2018 18:23

Esmae
Rosie
Bell/Bella

DramaAlpaca · 15/07/2018 18:24

I like all of them, especially Evangeline.

The only one I think is possibly a bit much is Esmeralda.

blackbirdbluebottle · 15/07/2018 18:24

Yeah they are too much OP, please don’t make your child suffer!

Belindabauer · 15/07/2018 18:25

I think Esmeralda is too much and I don't like Rowena. The others are fine.

HeyDolly · 15/07/2018 18:25

I think the only one that’s a bit much is Esmeralda though it would probably get shortened to Esme.

Evangeline has the danger of getting shortened to Evie.

Rowena is my favourite and is on my list for DD2 though DH has currently vetoed it.

ShotsFired · 15/07/2018 18:25

I know an (adult) Evangelina- she gets called Angie.
And a Rowena who just gets called Rowena.

The others are likely to be Esme (very old lady), Rosie (ok but not a very serious professional name for an adult), and Bella (which for our generation has the Twilight connotations. Or Emberg, if you are a little older Wink)

CherryPavlova · 15/07/2018 18:26

My daughter wants an Evangeline when the time comes. It’s lovely. The only Evangeline I know was at school with my son and is known as Evie.
I don’t know an Esmeralda but I know an Esme but the full name would be a bit Victor Hugo for my taste.
I know a few adult Rowenas who are all known as Rowena.
Have a cousin Rosemary and she’s called by her full name but could easily be acRosie or Rose.
I know a few Arabellas in the 17-20 age group. Most are known as Arabella or occasionally Bella.

RavenWings · 15/07/2018 18:26

Evangeline - this is nice. However I think she would become another in the horde of Eva/Evie girls.

Esmeralda - very Hunchback of Notre Dame, but I like it.

Rowena - not a fan

Rosemary - seems much older than your other choices iyswim. It's nice.

Arabella - overly frilly and flouncy and Bella esque names are overdone.

I'd go for Rosemary or Esmeralda.

Nothisispatrick · 15/07/2018 18:28

I think Esmeralda and Arabella are too much. Arabella seems very popular on MN although I've never actually met anyone called it, and I work with children so meet lots. I really dislike it.

starzig · 15/07/2018 18:30

I love them but you may find they will get shortened if you are in England. English people are awful for shortening perfectly lovely names into some really crass version.

WhereIsMyDog · 15/07/2018 18:32

This is really useful, thanks all. I'm surprised that Arabella is the one most people think is too much as I know about five Arabellas! All young adult.

I suppose Esmeralda could be nicknamed Esme?

OP posts:
MikeUniformMike · 15/07/2018 18:37

I know an Arabella known as Ella. It's pretty but a bit long and a bit downmarket.
Esmae is just wrong. Please don't give your child that spelling.
It's Esmée.
Esmerelada - bit long. A bit Disney.
Evangeline - too long. So many Eves, Evas...
Rowena - I know one, gets called Ro.
Rosemary - a bit herby. Prefer Rosalind.

daisypond · 15/07/2018 18:37

I love Rowena - that's my hands-down favourite. And I like Rosemary as well. I think the others are on the frilly side.

LucyFox · 15/07/2018 18:38

I like Rosemary best out of the names you’ve chosen
Esmarelda is always going to have HunchhBack references but any of the others are nice ... Evangeline & Arabella will get shortened though ... maybe you could preempt that by choosing angie or ari instead of Evie or Bella?

elephanttrunks · 15/07/2018 18:39

I adore Arabella and still bear a grudge to DH for not allowing DD to be named this.

elephanttrunks · 15/07/2018 18:40

Also I teach a Rosemary...it's a no from me!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 15/07/2018 18:41

Arabella is lovely, and not too much.

BertrandRussell · 15/07/2018 18:44

I think Rosemary is lovely. Incredibly uncommon but classic. Lots of shortenings but graceful and uncomplicated in full.

RayM · 15/07/2018 18:46

Arabella is a beautiful name.

BertrandRussell · 15/07/2018 18:47

Only about 60 Rosemarys a year for the past 10/15 years......

HonkyWonkWoman · 15/07/2018 18:51

Not helpful I know!
But we once had a goat called Esmeralda and a goose named Rosemary!😂
They were very cute though!

Charm23 · 15/07/2018 19:01

Not my sort of names really but if you like them, go for it!
I had a Rowena in my year at high school.

TroubledLichen · 15/07/2018 19:04

Love Arabella and Evangeline. Esmeralda is far too Disney. I personally think Rowena and Rosemary are awful, especially Rowena.

bridgetreilly · 15/07/2018 19:09

Evangeline: perfectly fine, nn Evie
Esmeralda: a bit ott
Rowena: perfectly fine
Rosemary: perfectly fine, nn could be Rosie
Arabella: perfectly fine, nn Bella
