Art - as a stand alone name... thoughts?

Art - I came across this as a stand alone Irish name (we're not Irish). I like the meaning. And o like that it's a real name but not common but also not strange.

However a stumbling block would be having friends and family in Essex dropping the 'T'... thoughts?

MEANING: In Ireland a seperate name from Arthur it comes from an ancient word for “”a bear,”” used in the sense of “”outstanding warrior”” or “”champion.”” A pagan High King of Ireland, Art’s rule was so honest that two angels hovered over him in battle.

Its really nice. I like it

ThinkingCat · 12/07/2018 18:09

"Oh like Art Garfunkel?" - People will say that to you. And to the baby. All the time. But if you are ok with that then no problem!

TroubledLichen · 12/07/2018 18:10

I really like Art but in my opinion it would butchered by the Essex accent and sound horrendous with a dropped T, like you’d named your child ‘R’. I wouldn’t do it if most of your friends/family would pronounce it like that.

And no offence to those from Essex, I’m one of you Grin

Branleuse · 12/07/2018 18:15

i really dont think people will say "like Art Garfunkle" forever.

HJL2506 · 12/07/2018 18:17

I'm not keen, I don't like Art short for Arthur. I'm from Essex and I agree, the "t" would not be stressed.

Imfinehowareyou · 12/07/2018 18:18

Fart.

swimmerlab · 12/07/2018 18:19

Garfunkel was my first thought.

With what's been said though, it does sound as though he may be called 'R'! I'd rethink!

ImAGoofyGoober · 12/07/2018 18:20

I don’t like it. It’s not got a nice sound imo.

Emma198 · 12/07/2018 18:24

I like it but I'd probably go for Arthur personally so he can choose when he's older. I like Artie too.

Mousefunky · 12/07/2018 18:31

Nice when it’s short for Arthur, Artie is cute too but not Art on its own.

DickensianHysteric · 12/07/2018 18:34

I like it. I met a wee Art at a toddler group about 20 years ago but he's the only one I've ever known!

daisypond · 12/07/2018 18:49

Is Artos a possibility? It seems more name-like perhaps. That's the source word from which Art comes from and its similar forms in Welsh and Cornish?

Grandmaswagsbag · 12/07/2018 18:51

Yep Garfunkel was my 1st thought too.

OutnumberedByFurchesters · 12/07/2018 18:52

Just immediately makes me think "Art the Fart".

BoyInTheOven · 12/07/2018 18:59

Thanks all - some good insights.

@TroubledLichen we don't live in Essex and my Essex family and friends are North rather than south Essex so I think he'd probably get more than an 'R' IYSWIM 😂 maybe an 'Arrr(t)'

I'm not 100% sure who Art Garfunkel is... I shall have a google! So maybe I've been sheltered or that wouldn't be an issue for early 30's and under?

I do like Arthur as well and probably would go better with the mn we're planning to use (James). But then there is James Arthur the singer?!?! (Just occurred to me)

I'm not completely dissuaded which I think is a good thing. Even with the mixed response.
I feel like after trawling thousands of baby names I've actually come across one I can imagine using... dd has been loopy today and I'm tired and hormonal so could also be that!

@daisypond Artos would be a bit left field for us I'm afraid. Thanks for the suggestion though

@OutnumberedByFurchesters @Imfinehowareyou I think if Art and Fart are as bad as it's gets that's pretty tame 😊

@DickensianHysteric thank you. How was his name received at the time?

Girlundercover · 12/07/2018 19:04

I’ve only met one person called Art, and I’m Irish, so quite unusual even here.

I like it though people may assume it short for Arthur.

TroubledLichen · 12/07/2018 19:11

Arrrrrr(t) I’m not convinced is much better, sounds a bit pirate-like to me! Can you just school the friends and family with some elocution lessons before the baby arrives or would they find that offensive?! 😂

Art James or Arthur James would be fine I think as it’s a middle name so will be rarely said out loud. I know 2 men called Michael George and in both cases George is their surname so there’s no escaping it for them.

Good luck deciding Grin

HJL2506 · 12/07/2018 19:23

Arthur is a lovely name. I think Arthur James is lovely and more than mine!

BoyInTheOven · 12/07/2018 19:24

@TroubledLichen Thank you! Elocution lessons may well be the way forward 😂. Pirate-chic could be the next thing in name trends you never know!

OP posts:
HJL2506 · 12/07/2018 19:26

More than fine. Not mine^

BoyInTheOven · 12/07/2018 19:29

@HJL2506 ah that's makes more sense - thank you 😊

This Art Garfunkel seems like quite a good guy. Quite the funky head of hair in his youth!

I'm under 30 and I instantly thought of Art Garfunkel.
I think most people (yes, even people under 30) would think the same
