I love timeless classical names such as Jane, Alice, Catherine and Helen, although some people would probably consider them boring.

I hate zany or makey up type names - Diesel, Honey, Autumn etc

I'm with you but I also dislike twee and frilly names.
Thomas and Catherine might be 'boring' but you wouldn't make any assumptions about their social or educational background, other than they had fairly unimaginative parents.

The most artistic and creative person I know has children called Jane, Edward and Lizzie. I don't think imagination and crazy names necessarily go hand in hand.

I hate names that aren't pronounced how the spelling suggests they ought to be.

I know of a child whose name when written isn't even a word... yet their name when spoken is a fairly common name.

For example:

Cietrn = Catherine

This is not the name I allude to above but it's very similar in terms of implausibility. Just an example.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 05/07/2018 15:24

I also find that sometimes just one letter makes all the difference.
Eg I love Daisy but Can't abide Maisie.
I love Lana but hate Lara.

MikeUniformMike · 05/07/2018 15:47

I'm not keen on names from a different culture or language when you have no connection, especially if they are misspelt or mispronounced.

Some names are lovely because they are new and fresh and then they become very popular, and then they seem tired.

Double-barreled names tend to turn two nice names into one ugly one.
Some names are a bit 'you what?!' when you hear them but they usually suit the little person.

mummabear1989 · 05/07/2018 15:56

i love long names...if my son was a girl he would have been named madison but instead he was a boy and named chandler (from tv series friends) if my daughter was a boy she was gonna be called benjamin but she wasnt so her name is abigail.

thismeansnothing · 05/07/2018 15:59

Ones I love. Old people names. I love Ida

dinosaurkisses · 05/07/2018 16:04

I love classic names- Catherine, Elizabeth, George, William, Thomas. Basically the Royal Family Baby Names’ back catalogue is right up my alley.

Also love traditional Irish names, which is what we went with for DD.

I don’t like diminutive names as the official name- that’s a personal preference, but I’d always go with Alfred over Alfie etc.

Moominfan · 05/07/2018 16:12

Atlastatlastatlast · 05/07/2018 22:45

I really like slightly dated but almost due a comeback names like Hilary, Pamela and Jane.

I dislikeAmerican type names such as Madison, Courtney and Brooke

Mammaof · 05/07/2018 22:47

I've never heard my dd name mentioned on mumsnet, or in real life, too scared to post incase of nasty comments about it

Strokethefurrywall · 05/07/2018 22:55

Dislike frilly/cutsie/old lady girls names (Daisy, Poppy, Alice, Maud, Ethel)
Dislike old man names (Harry, Charlie, Alfie, Archie, Stanley)

Like surnames for first names for boys, and names like Griffin, Dalton, Lachlan, Vaughn, Bodhi,

Mixed bag of likes for girls - Leah, Harper, Grace, Ellis, Dylan, Piper, Valentina, Vivienne

I would, however, never be rude about someone else's baby's name - it's all well and good to have a vague eye roll at hearing about another baby named [insert popular overused name here] but would never express that, and honestly when I meet a baby Daisy I just think "ahh what a gorgeous baby..."

Although my American neighbour has just had a baby boy called Desmond. It just makes me think of The Desmonds TV show!

bargainbin · 05/07/2018 22:58

Dislike the modern wave of names that people choose to be different but end up being all the same:

Carson
Harley
Bailey
Paige
Mila
Bobby
Mason
Cooper
Tyler
Taylor
Jackson
Ella
Elsie
Ellie
Perri

I could go on but you get the gist.

Otherwise I like traditional names, names that link kids to their culture/parent's culture, pretty names, nature names.

YoucancallmeVal · 05/07/2018 23:03

I like Many of the names which have lasted well over the years e.g. robert, James, Daniel, Alice, Sophie, Lucy.
I also like (to my mind ) pretty, frilly names like Polly, Persephone and seraphina.

I dislike surnames as names, or occupational first names. There are a raft of names I dislike as they have had connotations. I very much dislike the current trend for the weirdest old person name ever. And, just because I have been asked: I really cannot bear teddy, Freya, Bella, Evie or Alfie.

Pressuredrip · 05/07/2018 23:08

I'm completely and utterly drawn to names that are popular pet names. I have no idea why.

Eg Rufus, Toby, Felix, Digby, Rex, Milo
Cassie, Tiggy, Kitty, Tess, Pearl, Tabitha.

I appreciate most timeless names, particularly the older ones. I usually like very unusual names, I can't stand the majority of very very popular names because they are just too blah, and I hate alternative phonetic spellings.

AntoinetteOuradi · 05/07/2018 23:09

I dislike names that should be surnames (Jackson, Cooper, etc). Plus Jayden, Cayden, Liam, Ryan etc. All the chav names, really.

Also dislike hyphenated Christian names. Also think Madison ought to be illegal. Along with Paige. Ugh.

(My DC's names have been mentioned on MN as posh/vile, btw).

Alice is nice.

Picknickers · 05/07/2018 23:10

My likes and dislikes depend on how the name feels in my mouth. To me, Sidney/Sydney, Arthur, Deidre and Maud are fusty names. Penelope, Verity, Annabel Sebastian, Barnaby type names are too sweet. Names like Joyce feel lovely but don't work irl. As to what I do like, I'm so befuddled atm I haven't a clue!

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 05/07/2018 23:15

I like classic and timeless names.

I really dislike “wacky” and made up names. Also not keen on very American names (unless for Americans!).

In the playground at my dd’s school there is a boy named Baylan and girls named Dylan and Levi. That makes me think wtf.

schoty77 · 05/07/2018 23:27

I don't like trendy (ie. Nevaeh YUCK) or overly 'girly' names. I hate names that are old fashioned and people are trying to bring back (Audrey, Iris, Elsie, Hazel). I hate names that are occupations (Taylor, Sailor, Cooper, Shepherd).

Echobelly · 05/07/2018 23:29

I like some Hebrew names:

Gavriel, Adiel, Nir, Gilad

Mayim, Zahava

I don't like 'names that sound like surnames' a la Jackson, Miller, Kane, Cole, Emerson, Mackenzie, Tyler

ImanaveragepersonAMA · 05/07/2018 23:36

Royal names and biblical names are my favourite names. People might call the names boring but they're classics for a reason!
I also quite like flower names too but feel they're a bit frilly and weak

Lobsterquadrille2 · 05/07/2018 23:45

My favourite girls' names are Shakespearean: Miranda, Cordelia, Emilia, Portia. Also like Ianthe, Hebe, Artemis, Adelaide. Boys: Conrad is really the only name I love.

Names I dislike are those that I associate with someone who was a bully, generally unpleasant or just harsh sounding (to me). Lorraine, Darrell, Beverley spring to mind.

I have a double barrelled Christian name (not May!) and I do use both bits because I'm not keen on either of the halves on their own. I quite like it and have never met another. On the downside I can be googled easily - someone in my AA meeting was able to find my full name and address and write to me (we use first names only).

LemonysSnicket · 06/07/2018 00:12

Traditional like rose, kate

Romantic like Amelie, Aurelia, Eliana

Modern names like Winter, Rowan
