I love timeless classical names such as Jane, Alice, Catherine and Helen, although some people would probably consider them boring.

I hate zany or makey up type names - Diesel, Honey, Autumn etc

Really dislike “posh” names to be honest, such as:

Hugo
Jonty
Montague/Montgomery
Cressida
Ottille
Dorothea

On the flip side I like names such as:

Darcy
Olivia
Grace
Alice
Belle/Isabelle
James
Louis
Nathan
Charlie
George

Thankfully we all have different tastes Smile

I love classic elegant names, sometimes described as posh!

I dislike overused trendy names!

Itchytights · 06/07/2018 07:26

I hate made up sounding names.

Posh names and names that are spelt somehow wrong.

Far out there attention seeking names

I like English traditional names personally.

I find names like Olivia, Amelia, Isabella to flowery and fussy. I much prefer one or two syllable names. My dream name for a dd is Hero but dp wouldn't let me.

TatianaLarina · 06/07/2018 09:36

I like unusual but real names from mythology and literature and different countries.

I like some classic names but I generally dislike the unimaginative names that everyone calls their kids - Eva/Ava, Ella/Ellie, Grace, Jack, Harry, Olly.

I particularly dislike US style surnames as first names unless you’re American, double-barrelled first names, yoonique spellings, diminutives as first names.

Mousefunky · 06/07/2018 10:20

I’m with you really. I don’t like season names because to me they’re not names Grin. I don’t like names that just sound made up like Kayden. I don’t like hyphenated names that tend to be hyphenated with -Leigh/May/Rose/Mae. I don’t like dodgy spellings of names, e.g there’s a Maizi in my DS’s class.

I like traditional timeless names that also aren’t boring and overly common.

Mousefunky · 06/07/2018 10:21

Oh and also agree about disliking surnames as first names and using definite boys names for girls because there’s plenty of girls names to go around, why use James.

LongOldMile · 06/07/2018 11:34

I don't like the trend for old fusty names (Doris/Ethel/Maud) or dog names (Rufus/Oscar/Digby).

LongOldMile · 06/07/2018 11:36

I', also not a fan of the super popular like Noah, Lily/Lillie/Lilli/Lilly-May/Mae/Mai/Rose.

I don’t have a ‘type’ of name I like or dislike, but there are specific names im not a huge fan of. Bradley, William, Toby, Jayden, Keeley, Alicia or any variation of that name, george.
Over-used names like xxx-may, xxx

Crunchymum · 06/07/2018 14:27

DS has a classic, timeless (top 10!) name and both DD's have less popular "old lady" names. Both have risen in the ONS rankings though, so getting more popular.

pilates · 06/07/2018 20:12

I like traditional/classic names and dislike surnames used as first names

careerontrack · 08/07/2018 22:50

I can’t stand pretentious try to be posh names such as Cressida, Ptolomy, Arlo, Arabella. I also dislike surnames so Harrison, Cooper, Jackson (with Jaxon being the worst name on the planet). I also detest old lady names Edith, Agnes, Ethel kind of names.

My pet hate is the business of having to give a “proper” name. I just don’t buy that someone needs a choice of name and consider Katie, Molly, Alfie, Charlie, Harry as perfectly normal and sensible names although don’t have any great opinion on them.

PennyGH · 09/07/2018 22:07

I like traditional names like Elizabeth, Jane, Philippa. I also like what some would call frilly/posh names such as Romilly and Persephone. And for boys, like a previous poster, I am most definitely drawn to ‘dog’ names - Monty, Digby, Rex, Felix, Wilbur - love them!

Spongblobsparepants · 09/07/2018 22:13

I didn't choose names ending in 'a' because I think they sound 'posh'. BlushFor example Amelia, Noah, Arabella, Olivia etc. Of course I love the equally 'posh' sounding classic names mentioned in the op!

Cineraria · 09/07/2018 23:37

I like longish names that aren't linked strongly to a particular time (so either consistently popular or consistently very rare) and that are easy to spell and pronounce. I also like a diminutive that is special for that person or simply isn't an obvious one, e.g. Mine is a friend's child's mispronunciation of my name or Jem for Jeremy/Jeremiah.

I dislike surnames as first names, creative spellings, boys' names on girls, diminutives as given names, babyish names that will sound odd on an adult, highly fashionable names and foreign language names being used and mispronounced by those who don't speak the language.

schoty77 · 12/07/2018 07:10

I hate ‘Aussie’ names.. Felix, Rocco, Brody, Isla, Banjo, Pippa.

drumandthebass · 12/07/2018 09:06

I hate double barrelled first names, particularly "lily-mae" or "Ellie-Megan"

Also dislike when a first and middle name become just initials like Archie John = AJ

booniloo · 12/07/2018 11:04

I hate when people call their children names from cultures that they have no connection to. I think it's incredibly disrespectful of that culture, particularly when it's spelled wrong or mispronounced or suggested as a 'unique' or 'unusual name.

I love when people give their children names that have important meaning behind them, such as calling them after a loved one or someone lost. Regardless of what the name is I always think that's beautiful.

Belindabauer · 14/07/2018 08:31

I don't like Nick names such as Archie, Alfie, Freddie.

Or hyphenated names such as Mary-Jo, Lilly-Mae.

deptfordgirl · 14/07/2018 09:06

I dislike cutsie names (although I know they're really popular). So names like Alfie, Frankie, Freddie, Archie. Love Hebrew names for boys: Jonah, Elijah, Caleb, Ezra.

For girls I don't really have a type but like slightly quirky, not cutsie names like Matilda, Tabitha, Harriet, Emmeline.
