Dilemma: O'Surname but the only first name we like starts with O

Is it going to be really weird? It's the only name we both love. Been through all the baby name books. I can't say what the name is as it is too outing but think Orla O'Brian / Oscar O'Neill type thing. I'm 33 weeks pregnant and we know the sex so only 1 potential name.

Other option is to use my surname only rather than mine as second middle name then DH surname. But I'm worried DH family will be hurt if we don't use their surname at all. Help!

I think it's fine. And as a v. impressive example of a person named OO, there's always world-class philosopher Onora O'Neill: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onora_O%27Neill

daro · 04/07/2018 11:36

In Ireland the initials would be oon or oob. Definitely not a problem.

DramaAlpaca · 04/07/2018 11:40

I think it's fine. I'm also in Ireland so used to lots of O' surnames.

The Irish journalist & broadcaster Olivia O'Leary has got on just fine with her name and hers is very alliterative.

LoveInTokyo · 04/07/2018 12:08

I don't think O'Anything works as a second middle name (or even a surname listed first / double barrelled).

It could work if you dropped the O.

Like, instead of Oliver Jones O’Brien you could have Oliver Brien Jones or Oliver Brien-Jones.

Flamingosnbears · 04/07/2018 12:53

It's fine I'll be doing it myself.

CiderwithBuda · 04/07/2018 13:02

I dint see it as a problem. It goes well I think. Am also Irish and was going to mention Olivia O’Leary. Just don’t use a name beginning with X for a middle name! Grin

TheGrumpySquirrel · 04/07/2018 13:42

Okay you've given me confidence to go with the original plan 👍🏼 thanks guys

DC will have both surnames with mine first. Then can choose which to use unofficially.

@AsAProfessionalFekko what do you mean? People at work think it's odd?

OP, I'd guess they just put a dot in his initials to make them eyes.

itbemay · 04/07/2018 15:21

i have an O' surname, as do my dcs but when we write initials we always write O'S and first initial - so e.g PO'S..... so never just O on its own. We all love our O' surname - have whatever name you want!

BabloHoney · 04/07/2018 15:25

I think it's fine! It's actually more of a tongue twister if the name ends in O (I know a Leo O'Brien which is a bit tongue twisty!)
Good luck with your baby x

CaliforniaLoove · 04/07/2018 15:26

Well I love it. Alliterative names are the BEST in my opinion. I'd actively choose one. They are individual and flow really well.

harrietm87 · 04/07/2018 19:11

@NameChange30 I don't think O'Anything works as a second middle name (or even a surname listed first / double barrelled).

We gave our baby an O' surname as his second middle name - works great!

In answer to your question I think it's completely fine

harrietm87 · 04/07/2018 19:11

Sorry didn't mean to tag namechange30 - was quoting the OP!

skinnymalinkmalojin · 04/07/2018 19:16

I went to school with a Brian O'Brien. THAT was weird. Everyone called him BobGrin

I don't think a first name beginning with O would be strange with an O' surname.

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 04/07/2018 19:18

Is it Oisín, by any chance? Wouldn’t be a problem verbally, and who cares what it looks like written down?

TheGrumpySquirrel · 04/07/2018 20:34

@Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar not that, but similar sort of sounds.

@EllenJanethickerknickers Grin thanks for explaining! Lol

I think it sounds cool

Etino · 04/07/2018 23:47

So long as you give him the middle name Vincent so his initials at OVO nn owl.

powershowerforanhour · 04/07/2018 23:48

Is it your seventh child? Double cool points if so.

bridgetreilly · 05/07/2018 09:25

Middle name Xanthe or Xavier? I dare you!

OwlBeThere · 06/07/2018 13:38

I have a friend called Orla O’Reilly. I think it’s great!

daisypond · 06/07/2018 13:55

It's fine.
