Dilemma: O'Surname but the only first name we like starts with O

Is it going to be really weird? It's the only name we both love. Been through all the baby name books. I can't say what the name is as it is too outing but think Orla O'Brian / Oscar O'Neill type thing. I'm 33 weeks pregnant and we know the sex so only 1 potential name.

Other option is to use my surname only rather than mine as second middle name then DH surname. But I'm worried DH family will be hurt if we don't use their surname at all. Help!

I don’t think either if the examples you give sound bad? Is the O sound in the first name you’ve chosen the same as the O of the surname? I know that might sound silly but Orla and Oscar have different O sounds, so another might too?

SoddingUnicorns · 04/07/2018 09:38

Although I’ve just realised initials will be OO so maybe a middle name in the mix?

Eatsleepworkrepeat · 04/07/2018 09:38

I love alliterative names, so I'd go for it. Both examples sound good.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 04/07/2018 09:39

@SoddingUnicorns they are different O sounds yes, like in the examples.

Baby will have 2 middle names, both consonants (although now tempted to go for OOO Wink)

@Eatsleepworkrepeat thank you, as it's getting closer I'm just over analysing the decision a bit as wouldn't want DC to get teased at school or something!

OOO would be the best Halloween name badge ever 😁

On a serious note though, with different O sounds I don’t see a problem, and in daily life it won’t even be an issue I think.

Rockandrollwithit · 04/07/2018 09:43

I have an O' surname and I think it's fine.

My youngest DS's initials are HO 🙈
Thankfully he has a middle name too!

TheGrumpySquirrel · 04/07/2018 09:44

Yes so for example Owen O'Brian does sound a bit weird because it's the same O sound

OP posts:
DeckSofa · 04/07/2018 09:47

If they're different O sounds I think it's fine.

Littlelambpeep · 04/07/2018 09:49

Lots of children in my DC's school have that type of name - o something.

I like it

Rinceoir · 04/07/2018 09:49

I don’t think it’s weird at all. In fact I know several O O’ people and it’s never occurred to me that it’s odd!

StableGenius · 04/07/2018 09:50

As long as it's not Orlando, I don't see a problem.

Lindah1 · 04/07/2018 09:51

Sounds fine to me

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 04/07/2018 09:52

I don't even think Owen O'Brian sounds odd, in fact I think it flows very well, but then I'm in Ireland where there are a lot of O'Surnames. Perhaps Brian O'Brian would be a little odd, but not an O first name.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 04/07/2018 09:53

@StableGenius Grin no the name doesn't end in O as well!

Gooseygoosey12345 · 04/07/2018 10:08

I think it's fine, and really how often do you say someone's full name aloud!

NameChange30 · 04/07/2018 10:11

Give the child your surname and your DH’s surname as a second middle name.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 04/07/2018 11:10

@NameChange30 I don't think O'Anything works as a second middle name (or even a surname listed first / double barrelled).

AsAProfessionalFekko · 04/07/2018 11:14

I work with an OO. He gets 👀.

Pebblespony · 04/07/2018 11:18

I think it's fine but, like a pp, I'm in Ireland so more common here.

dw23 · 04/07/2018 11:19

Serena William's daughter is called Olympia Ohanian and that works so I don't see why not. I like alliterative names too though.

WildIrishRose1 · 04/07/2018 11:25

I know someone with this type of name and it's absolutely fine. I never noticed it until this thread, actually.

NameChange30 · 04/07/2018 11:25

Don’t use it at all then Wink

DowntonCrabby · 04/07/2018 11:29

Both my children have AA initials but with different sounds, I think your examples above sound absolutely fine.
