Is Thomas boring?

Just that really. I've always like Thomas and i quite like Tom, though hate Tommy. But is Thomas boring?

DD has a rare name (given to 10 babies in total the year she was born) and I tend to prefer more uncommon names but keep coming back to Thomas

Thoughts?

Yes, it's a tad boring

QueenCity · 02/07/2018 13:26

No, it's lovely.

Littlelambpeep · 02/07/2018 13:28

Mine both have similar names and I would chose Thomas.
Perhaps I wouldnt if I had an unusual name for the fiedt baby though. I would try and keep a similar vein.

That is just me (probably being silly)

Littlelambpeep · 02/07/2018 13:29

First

BikeRunSki · 02/07/2018 13:29

It is very popular ime. I am a Cub leader. 30% of my Cubs are called Thomas! Obviously, this is for boys aged 8-10.

halcyondays · 02/07/2018 13:30

Popular but I wouldn't say boring. It's a nice name.

VelociraptorRex · 02/07/2018 13:42

My DS is a Thomas, it's a family name hence why we chose it, I haven't come across any others yet but he's only at nursery

hoping2018 · 02/07/2018 13:43

Definitely safe but certainly benefits for going for a traditional name - won't date like many others!

bonbonours · 02/07/2018 13:46

I have a Thomas, sometimes Tom, never Tommy. I think it's a classic boys name which will never go out of fashion. It is popular but mine has never had another one in his class so it's not been a problem.

Username12345 · 02/07/2018 13:49

Yes.

ladycarlotta · 02/07/2018 14:11

I think Tom or Thomas is really nice. I don't think it matters if it's very commonly used - in fact I do know someone with a Tom and two other DSs whose names are far more unusual - they fit well together, and the Thomas kind of tempers the unusualness.

fanominon · 02/07/2018 14:22

I have a dd with a more unusual name (although creeping up) and a ds called Thomas/Thom - never Tommy. I still like the name - solid, friendly feel, imo. Safe, even a little but boring - maybe, but there are worse things (and he has a more unusual middle name if he ever wants to go off-piste!)

I quite like Thomson/Thompson which ds has had as a nickname a few times which is a slightly more interesting option (He also had Thomsk, but I think that is probably only suitable for Wombles ;-)

ClaudiaWankleman · 02/07/2018 14:24

Not boring. Pretty timeless actually I think. Grows well with a child.

FoxAndBear · 02/07/2018 14:28

Yes a thousand times yes. I'm not sure what could be more boring than Thomas, other than maybe George, Oliver or Edward.

MikeUniformMike · 02/07/2018 15:41

Safe but not boring. I like Thomas, Tom and Tommy. It's a classic name like James or Matthew.

lenalove · 02/07/2018 15:51

A nice name, but yes I'd say a bit boring!

Flamingosnbears · 02/07/2018 16:32

Not really but be prepared for a couple of kids to turn around when you shout it...

IHaveBrilloHair · 02/07/2018 16:34

It is boring, but it's also a strong, classic name.

StayGoldPonyBoy · 02/07/2018 17:01

Nothing wrong with a ‘boring’ name. Once it’s assigned to your Thomas/Tom it will be associated with whatever he wants to be, it’s a name that can be worn without any expectations or assumptions if that makes sense!

Cosmoa · 02/07/2018 17:24

It's very boring to me. But that's because I have about 5 cousins names Thomas and my partners brother is also Thomas. I also went to school with plenty of them. It must be a loved name for that reason, but I've never understood why!

MollyHuaCha · 02/07/2018 21:26

I like it.

HurricaneHalle · 02/07/2018 21:30

It's not a name I would choose.

Disfordarkchocolate · 02/07/2018 21:33

Lovely and classic name, not one that will date. It also has a lovely meaning (the lord has added to the family).

NC4Now · 02/07/2018 21:36

I think it’s a lovely name. My boys have names of a similar type - think William and Joseph - and both go by the short version (never the -y version).
They are classic and they both love their names.

I write for a living so names have to pass the byline test for me. Would you take a Times columnist with that name seriously?

Thomas - yes.
Indigo - lovely, but no.

TwinkleToes86 · 02/07/2018 21:42

Incredibly boring. Dull.

Go for an uncommon one...please...
