Is Thomas boring?

Just that really. I've always like Thomas and i quite like Tom, though hate Tommy. But is Thomas boring?

DD has a rare name (given to 10 babies in total the year she was born) and I tend to prefer more uncommon names but keep coming back to Thomas

Thoughts?

Yes, probably the most boring apart from John perhaps.

sonnyboo · 03/07/2018 08:00

Overused ( there are 4 Toms in our class), dull and quite boring.

There are SO many other lovely classic names to choose from.

flissfloss65 · 03/07/2018 08:03

I really like Tom, solid strong name.

lisaBee123 · 03/07/2018 08:03

I think Thomas and Tom are both lovely!

ByTheWishingWell · 03/07/2018 08:07

I have a girl with a very unusual name, but love Thomas for a boy. Go for it.

FairfaxAikman · 03/07/2018 08:36

Ds's name is in a similar vein and I did consider Thomas.

I love it - it's a name that is recognised but will stand out among all the Jensen's, Jackson's, Alfie's and Charlies in the class.

He won't have to spell it and it works as easily for a high court judge as a supermarket shelf stacker.

Scottishgirl85 · 03/07/2018 09:03

Yes I think so. If you've gone unusual for your dd it seems strange to pick a really common name for ds. I know five Thomas' under 3. I love unusual names. Perhaps tell us your dd name and we could suggest a few for ds.

Corneliusmurphy · 03/07/2018 09:13

Dd has an unusual name and I went for Thomas for one of my twins, it was my dad's name and I've always loved it.

We have maybe just been lucky but haven't bumped into any others at school. I actually know more kids called Jaxon than Tom.

With pfb dd we really didn't want her to be be in a class with six others of the same name but with the boys we'd relaxed a bit and decided it was more important to have names we loved. Most importantly he (now 8) loves his name.

butlerswharf · 03/07/2018 09:18

It's in the eye of the beholder. I'd say it's a classic name. Your baby your choice. Choose your favourite name or I'll bet you'll regret it. Smile

dancingunicorns123 · 03/07/2018 09:35

Personally in my area there are quite a few Thomas' from babies to adults

Halfahunnerstillastunner · 03/07/2018 10:12

I prefer Tom to Thomas, as it sounds to me a bit more "sturdy gardener who likes rugby" name than rather "stuffy, wears cravats, votes Tory" Thomas. That's just the ones I know though Grin

MariaMadita · 03/07/2018 15:18

No. Thomas is fab!

heatwave2018 · 03/07/2018 15:24

I love Thomas and Edward, fat controller is pushing it though

Mousefunky · 03/07/2018 20:27

Yes, it’s incredibly vanilla. I went to school with a fair few in the nineties and it’s still common now. You could say that’s a good thing as its timeless but it’s far too common for my liking and I’m not one for yoo-nique names by any stretch.

AnneWiddecombesHandbag · 03/07/2018 20:29

I have a Thomas. He's mostly a Tom. Never a Tommy. It's a family name. He's the only one in his school which surprised me

ZenNudist · 03/07/2018 20:33

No. Its strong, classic and timeless. Its good for child and adult. There are a lot of awfully dated names of an era already (sorry josh, Alfie, noah). Thomas could be any century and any age now.

Grandmaswagsbag · 03/07/2018 20:33

I think it’s a good solid name, but yes a little boring. Currently expecting ds and I think he will be a Thomas. I think people forget that they are naming a man, not a baby, and than man could grow up to be anything in their professional life. It’s all very well having Arlos and Oscars but often there will end up being millions of them at the same age group anyway. I’ve come across far more little Arlos, Noah’s, etc than Toms.

MissBartlettsconscience · 03/07/2018 20:34

I have a Tom. He's the only one is his year at school. There are 4 Max’s, 2 Archie's and 2 Raphael. It's probably so boring now that fewer people are using it so it's becoming rarer!

userabcname · 03/07/2018 20:34

To me it is. I'm a teacher in secondary and each year group has several Thomas/Toms (so are usually referred to by surnames). The majority of DH's friends are called Tom. Several of my friends have husband/partners called Tom. I have a few friends with sons called Thomas. I don't know whether I'm in a particulaly Thomas/Tom-heavy area or whether it's this popular everywhere but I would never choose it personally.

MissBartlettsconscience · 03/07/2018 20:34

I have a cat called Oscar.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 03/07/2018 20:35

Thomas is a lovely name. Not boring at all, just classic.

FunnysInLaJardin · 03/07/2018 20:36

I love the name Thomas. DS 2 is Rafe Thomas and we would have had it as a first name except his cousin is Thomas.

FWIW I have never come across another Thomas and my children are 12 and 8.

Elasticity · 03/07/2018 20:37

Yes it's boring

Go for Tad or Theo

FrangipaniBlue · 03/07/2018 20:43

Definitely not, it's a beautiful name but then I am a tad biased!

It was in the top 5 boys names for something like 7 years and topped the table 3 times in the run up to DS being born, but there are 200+ children at his primary (he's now in y5) and in all that time there hasn't been a single other Thomas.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/07/2018 20:44

Not boring. Great name.
