Woody

If you hear the name Woody, do you think of
A) woodpecker
B) toy story
C) Allen

Or none of them. I love the name. So does DH. We are Fine with Toy Story connection and confident that only the older generation will make the link to woodpecker. But would hate an association with Woody Allen. It hadn’t occurred to me until DM helpfully pointed it out (because she doesn’t like what she calls ‘out there names’ and would name a boy David or James, which are perfectly fine. But not what I like personally).

He would be William on birth certificate but don't want that as every day name because a) there are already 4 in the family and b) I just know it will get shortened by someone to Billy which I really do not like. Thank you

I just think of a tree or wood pile or Zoe Ball's son! It's nice enough for a boy, but for a man???

Boobyboo2 · 24/06/2018 21:37

Love Woody!! If any connection would only think of Toy Story

Guacamoledip · 24/06/2018 21:38

My first thought was toy story. I think it’s nice enough and if it’s what you like then go for it.
I like that the birth certificate would be William so he would have the choice when he’s older because it is quite a different name.

SaltyLemons · 24/06/2018 21:38

Oh God I'm sorry if this ruins it for you but it's slang for an erection...Zoe Ball used it though and I can see how it could be cute. But it conjures up an erection for me Blush

Sophronia · 24/06/2018 21:38

I think “erection” too!

Ploppymoodypants · 24/06/2018 21:39

Ah tree or wood pile is fine by us 😁 had forgotten about Zoe Balls son. And if he hates it as a man we can ask to be called William, as per birth certificate.

Thank you

I thought it’s was just ‘wood’ for erection. And also quite a dated term. Something Jilly Cooper or my mum would use.
I have never heard my generation say ‘wood’ or ‘woody’. We were all about the ‘stiffies’ and ‘hard ons’ 😂
(Didn’t see the thread taking this turn)

Erection for me too. 🍆

Discotits · 24/06/2018 21:42

Makes me think of a hard on. I do know two Woodys though.

Needmoresleeep · 24/06/2018 21:42

Reminds me a bit of woody woodpecker or toy story
Could you used Edward and Woody as a nick name?

MrsSteptoe · 24/06/2018 21:45

I absolutely love Woody, and I think of Guthrie (because I'm a bit of an old hippy). But I'd think carefully according to what your surname is. Not least because you can pun on "Would he ...".

Arlo also a great name (Arlo Guthrie was Woody's son)
Not that you asked me for additional suggestions Blush

BeTheHokeyMan · 24/06/2018 21:47

Erection here too im afraid Blush

WaitrosePigeon · 24/06/2018 21:49

I think ‘cringe’

Myneighboursnorlax · 24/06/2018 21:52

My first thought was erection too, sorry!

Ploppymoodypants · 24/06/2018 21:54

Surname is fine.
Hmmm, surprised at the elerextion thing.
I might ask some of my friends older teenagers and see what think. (Not older generation opinions donat matter, but I think it’s unlikley that his granny or uncle will bully him/tease him about his name )

celtiethree · 24/06/2018 21:56

erection here as well, woody as a diminutive for William would be a def no for me.

second association would be woody allen.

JaimeLannister · 24/06/2018 21:58

I'm 30. My first thought would be Toy story, then erection. Sorry.

Enidblyton1 · 24/06/2018 21:59

I would assume his surname was Wood or similar

MrsClutterworth · 24/06/2018 22:01

First thing I thought of was toy storySmile that's not a bad thing though! It's a lovely name.

HeyDolly · 24/06/2018 22:02

My first thoughts would be erection, toy story, Zoe Ball.

JaretsGirlfren · 24/06/2018 22:04

Toy Story (innocent mind!) I also used to babysit for a family who’s lovely dog was called Woody. Their cat was called Buzz!

BridgetJonesDaiquiri · 24/06/2018 22:05

I know a Woody. His nickname came from an embarrassing story about getting wood at a very inopportune moment!

Teachervoice · 24/06/2018 22:06

I second @Needmoresleeep - Edward with nn Woody. We had to ditch William because of Billy - I couldn't bring myself to take the risk.

When he goes to school, he will be on the register as William, unless you specifically request otherwise and then there's the risk of Billy rearing it's ugly head. As you can tell, I feel strongly about this!

theveryhighlife · 24/06/2018 22:08

Sorry Op I make the association with erection too :-/ I'm in my early 30's

Realowlette · 24/06/2018 22:13

My DS is known as Woody. He has a longer, more traditional name on his birth certificate but is known at nursery etc as Woody. Obviously I love it and am biased, it's a unique little name for a gorgeous boy! If you love it go for it, don't worry about what anyone else thinks. Nobody has ever said anything but positive things to us (and if they feel differently I would expect them to keep their mouths closed Wink)
