Boys named Finn

I'm having a disagreement with boyfriend about how common the name Finn actually is - he seems to think it is really common and this is a reason to discount it.

This is the only name both of us quite like other than Leo which we can't use as it would sound a bit ridiculous paired with very near aged cousin Theo. (also too many Leo's about I think)

How many Finns do you know? I've met 2 in my life ever. Are there really loads of Baby Finns being popped out in 2018?

Any other boy name suggestions welcome, surname isn't 100% settled but will begin with either V or A.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

There are 2 Finns under 4 on my street. I've met a fair few more at baby group etc too.

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 20/06/2018 04:36

2 Finn’s at DS’s kindergarten.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 20/06/2018 07:50

I worked in childcare for 12 years and came across one Finley. Never heard of a Finn in my child's classes at school. It's not common round where I live.

LastTangoInParis · 20/06/2018 08:39

I know a 10 year old Finn and knew a Finley who would not be about 8.

I wouldn't worry about the Leo / Theo thing. They're different ages, will likely go to different school and have different friendship groups? Also is Theo a Theodore?

waterlego6064 · 20/06/2018 08:56

As always, there are regional differences in popularity. We have a Finlay, nn Fin, born in the mid 00s. We don’t know any others locally, even though I know it is not an uncommon choice.

Our DD has a VERY common name- was at #1 for years. But she says there is only one other in her year at school and a couple of others in different year groups.

HollyGibney · 20/06/2018 09:01

Leo wasn't even in the top 50 when I chose it and I still haven't met any others. I only know one Finn, he's ten I think.

jeanzbeanz · 20/06/2018 13:02

Ooh love Finn, adding it to my list

Skittlesandbeer · 20/06/2018 13:08

In Australia there are 1000’s around at the moment. Tailing off a bit in 2018 because even Blind Freddie can see it’s been overused in the last 8 years.

I wouldnt care a jot if there was a cousin with a rhyming name to Leo.

daisypond · 20/06/2018 13:19

I think Finlay/Finbar/Fintan, etc, are nicer than Finn. Finn is OK as a nickname.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 20/06/2018 14:41

I know 3 Finns but honestly about 16 Finlays (or variant spelling).

I’m in Scotland though which is Finlay-Central

Abetes · 20/06/2018 14:46

I’m in London and there are lots of Finlays /Finbars here. All known as Fin or Finn. They are all around the 10-13 age group but to be honest I don’t know many babies to know if it is still super popular,

newlywedmum · 20/06/2018 14:46

I know only a singular Flynn but no Finns, but a handful of Leos!

MrsJayy · 20/06/2018 14:51

I know a couple of Finns they were born to slightly hippyish parents and trotted about in wellies in summer because they wanted too the oldest finn i know is 18 .

MrsJayy · 20/06/2018 14:53

Yeah I am in Scotland it is popular here.

FinallyARainbow · 20/06/2018 14:58

In Scotland and know 1 Finn (mine). His nursery (large in city centre) had never had a Finn before him so I don't think it's particularly overused.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 20/06/2018 18:10

I work with children and have come across a LOT of kids named Finn or Finlay/Finley but nn Fin, of both teenage and primary school age. There is also one at my DD's (small) preschool.

Belindabauer · 20/06/2018 23:09

1 Finn
2 Finlays

AlliKaneErikson · 21/06/2018 14:29

I know 2 around the age of about 8.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 21/06/2018 14:48

I know one Finlay who is 6.
I also know a dog called Finn (not helpful, sorry!).

I like it.

MrsFoxPlus4 · 21/06/2018 14:50

Most Finns I know are actually Finley. I know far more Leo’s!

Snorkmaiden85 · 21/06/2018 14:52

I'm in the GP waiting room and by some weird coincidence the appointment beepy thing flashed up for a Finn just after I clicked on this thread. It was a grown up Finn if that helps!

I like it, don't think it's super common. My name is one of the most common for women of my age and I survive 😊

Theweasleytwins · 21/06/2018 15:00

I know 2

One teen and one baby

MikeUniformMike · 21/06/2018 15:01

I think you are better off giving an ordinary name than an unusual one. But people think of names as being a lot more unusual than they are, and by the time little Noah or Freya goes to school, they are one of several.

Halfblindbunny · 21/06/2018 15:07

I know a 9 year old Finn
I know a labradoodle called Finn
I know a Flynn and a Finley
That's it.

sonnyboo · 21/06/2018 15:42

I don't agree at all. A classic underused name is much more interesting and memorable than another top 20 name!
