I'm going to have a nameless baby.

I'm due in just over a month, most days DP & I discuss baby names and make no progress whatsoever. He's rubbish at suggesting but quick to say no to the majority of my suggestions.

I like a list of about 10 names, he's vetoed them all bar 2. I'm not really fond on these either.

The two names that haven't been vetoed are
Miles
Victor

I need a timeless name, that's not common now, but not too "unusual". Something your granddad might have been called.

This is probably my 3rd/4th baby name thread Blush

Time is ticking and I'm afraid my poor little man won't have a name!

We named both of ours at the very last minute - and it was so we could try out the names on them once they'd uncrumpled..

We hadn't agreed on anything at all when the babies were born, and they both ended up being called something that wasn't even on a provisional name list.

Keep a list of 3-5 and when he arrives it will likely become clearer. We agonised for ages with DD1 and once she arrived, 3 of our 5 names didn't suit her at all and it was just a couple of days to choose the final.

I have the same problem, also am looking for the same type of name you are.
I like Nathaniel for a long time, but just hated any nickname for it, which put me off the name.
Then we almost agreed on Hugo, but DH didn't think it was right for us.

We considered William (Bill) but too popular, Alexander (DH not keen) Louis (until the royals used it which ruined it for me!), Lewis - like it but got bored.
We liked Albert and Arthur but not enough to use.
I liked Dillon but not Dylan (which is the more popular spelling and I don't want child to gave to spell out their name all the time).
I liked Matthew. When I had 20 week scan I was thinking of baby as Matthew when we found out he was a boy...DH thinks it's too dated.
We've tentatively chosen the name Stanley. Both of us like the name, but we're scared to use it too much in case we get bored of it. So I'm still referring to him as 'the baby'. He's due in 11 weeks. Im sure if Stanley was the right name, then we'd both keep using it and thinking of baby as this...so I don't know.

Don't forget Grandad names are in fashion, so it will make it harder to find something uncommon.

My Grandfathers were both called Robert. I quite like it.
Their brothers were things like John, James, William, Cyril, Sidney, Donald.

All born 1890s or 1900s.

As he's not suggesting anything, start from zero, make a list of your top 10 and he chooses one from that. End of.

Grandad old fashion names are the trend just now so if your looking for uncommon names I would stear away from them.

I think we have the same DH! It's frustrating isn't it?

I agree with PP that a lot of Grandad names seem to be in fashion at the moment so will be overused.

Have to say, I think Miles is a gorgeous name. Works well from babyhood all the way through, has a long history in the UK (particularly in England and spelt ‘Myles’ it has Irish connections). Just seems to fit your bill as unusual but not too ‘out there’.

oldbirdy · 20/06/2018 19:51

My grandads were called Eric and Austin, both quite cool names you don't hear that often.
