And what are your thoughts?

You can barely move in our town without bumping into an Ava/Eva/Eve/Evie. For a while I thought the parents had been issued with a very limited compulsory name list.

If your DH dislikes Freya, surely that name has been crossed of your list now anyway?

Ginandplatonic · 16/06/2018 09:02

Freya.

Around here it's less common than Ava in both senses of the word.

WanderingTrolley1 · 16/06/2018 09:04

Freya is too “try-hard” for my liking. Ava is better.

MadisonAvenue · 16/06/2018 09:04

Ava

Really don't like Freya

rockabyedaydrop · 16/06/2018 09:25

@JiltedJohnsJulie

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear, my DH does like Freya but thinks it might be a bit common. He hasn't completely vetoed it!

See I’ve only ever met one Freya and I’m a primary school teacher. So it can’t be that popular. Ava on the other hand - I know about a billion of those.

I love Freya and would have used it myself except I didn’t like how it sounded with our surname.

Jammycustard · 16/06/2018 09:53

Freya

LoveInTokyo · 16/06/2018 10:16

Ava is very popular on our council estate. Freya is a name is associate with ‘trying to be posh’....

Goodness, who do these council estates chavs think they are, naming their daughters Ava and Freya? Ruining perfectly nice names like that. They should know their place and call their daughters Krystal and Chardonnay and Ella-Rae instead.

Clarabumps · 16/06/2018 10:21

Freya

HappyLollipop · 16/06/2018 10:28

I love the name Ava it's the name I would've used if DS was a girl!, I don't like Freya and its more popular too as I've come across quite a few but only one Ava.

MrsMrsMrsMrs · 16/06/2018 10:32

I would say Freya has been reasonably popular for quite a while, but Ava maybe for a shorter time but more popular. We definitely know a few of each but I think right now there are more Avas than Freyas around.
Go with the one that feels right when you meet her.
They are both very lovely names.

Octopeppa · 16/06/2018 10:38

Much prefer Ava to Freya.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 16/06/2018 11:25

Freya, though I like them both !

MikeUniformMike · 16/06/2018 11:37

Freya. Both are very popular and she will be one of many in her age group. Ava will disappear into all the little Avas, Eves, Evas, Evies and Everlyns.

letsallhaveanap · 16/06/2018 11:40

Both gorgeous! But Ava is so incredibly popular now that I would probably go for Freya.
Loved Ava (much nicer than Eva) but left it off our list because its been in top three girls names in use for the past couple of years now and looks set to stay there.

StruggsToFunc · 16/06/2018 11:42

Freya is popular but not ‘common’ in the pejorative sense IMHO.

Agree with PP that there are millions of Avas, especially when combined with all of the Evas, Evies and Aoifes.

PuppetOnAString · 16/06/2018 11:43

I work with children, both are massively popular and I can think of several off the top of my head. Nice names but she would probably be the 16th one in the class. (Might be exaggerating slightly..).

letsallhaveanap · 16/06/2018 11:45

when I her Ava I think of Ava Gardner and when I hear Freya I think of one of my old school friends and I went to one of the old public schools.... so cannot see why either of these names would be considered 'common'!
I think they are both classics and if anyone on a council estate has used them then good for them!
TBH I dont think there are many 'common' names any more... people are quite experimental with names at the moment and you see a lot of classic names from the 30s and 40s getting trendy... yes even on council estates shock horror!!

TatianaLarina · 16/06/2018 11:46

Both very overused. Personally really dislike Freya and I’ve no idea why it’s so popular.

Flamingosnbears · 16/06/2018 12:10

Both very popular in my area (Merseyside) I'd say Ava myself.

MikeUniformMike · 16/06/2018 12:29

I don't understand why either are popular. Nothing wrong with them but they are a bit boring because there are so many.

RavenWings · 16/06/2018 12:35

I think that both are a bit boring, but Ava is worse due to blending into Aoife, Eva etc names as pp mentioned. Its very generic sounding. So I'd be going for Freya.

dinosaurkisses · 16/06/2018 12:42

Ava is fine. Bordering on bland based on how many Eva, Evie, Aoife etc are about. I think it’ll date as being a name used v commonly in the 2010s.

Love Freya- it’s feminine but still strong sounding. Not at all common where I am (Ireland) so popularity wouldn’t be an issue for me.

CPtart · 16/06/2018 13:08

I prefer AVa but would choose Freya due to the popularity of Ava and its similarity to Eva of which there are also millions.

MeyYael · 16/06/2018 16:50

Freya is nice.

I also like Ada and Alma. (Not too fond of Ava, tbh...)
