Baby names

Robyn or Robin

Hi

We are expecting a baby in September and are thinking of naming the baby Robin or Robyn

We don't know the sex of the baby but I have a huge feeling it's a boy

Anyway, regardless of that, what is the correct spelling for girl or boy?

I agree itā€™s Robyn for a girl and Robin for a boy and I like it.

My first midwife was called Robyn, she was amazing. Had a long wait in triage then she was like an angel. Lovely name.

Robin boy and Robyn girl is my understanding.

I know a few female Robins, so I think Robin can be unisex (I also know some male Robins, but they're in their 50s/60s). However the Robyn spelling is exclusively female.

I know a fantastic woman called Robin with an I. Her late sister also a neutral name. Both fabulous women. If your child grows up half as excellent you will be doing alright.

I think the Robyn spelling is slightly odd, though I agree it is exclusively female. Robin is a diminutive of Robert (as in Robin Hood), so in theory it's a male name. But as nowadays we tend to think of the name Robin as referring to the bird and nothing to do with the name Robert, I prefer this spelling for the girl's name as well.

Robin Wright (formerly Penn) is definitely a girl, and I know other non-celeb females with Robin as their given name spelling

My youngest is Robin (boy) There was a Robyn (girl) at his senior school with a similar surname so a small amount of confusion ensued.
It's a lovely name for a little boy though and now he's adult he's mainly Rob.
Don't have Christopher as a middle name though Grin

The robin spelling for females comes from the US where robin is predominantly a female name only and they don't use the robyn spelling.

I know a lovely 7 year old Robin (female), I much prefer it without the y for a girl.

I know the convention is Robyn for girls but I know a girl Robin and think it's nicer spelled that way, like the bird.

My friend's child is a Robyn. I love the name. Her Robyn is a sweet and kind but independant, brave and strong girl. I think it is a strong name and predict an end of the floral, cutesy 'a' ending names trend, what with #metoo and the celebrations of strong females of late.

Robin - boy

Robyn - girl

I donā€™t like it as a girls name.

Thanks everyone

We like quite traditional names and hubby is still not quite sure, we don't want people to necessarily associate it with being the bird, just as a name, but I'm quite keen on it so trying to persuade hubby

I've got a female friend called Robyn.

Spelling it with a "y" for a girl would be easier so people will know she's a girl on her schoolwork, cv's etc. (Assuming you have a girl).

If I saw Robin with an "I", I would assume a male. Lovely name for either gender x

Great name, I particularly like it for boys. I know a Robin in his twenties, really suits him - and I think he goes by Rob with his closest friends.

I think Robin with an ā€˜iā€™ is a bit cooler for a girl. Like Robin in the Strike TV series/novels.
