Opinions on Cormoran

Is it too unusual for a boy?
Yes from the Robert Galbraith novels, but I think we'll stick to the Cornish giant origin.
DH and I love it, but are we setting him up for a life of "Cameron, is it?" Does that even matter? I have an unusual variation of a more common name and it's never particularly bothered me...
Thoughts? (Rhys as a middle name, if it's relevant)

All I'm getting from it is moron... Not a nice term

MikeUniformMike · 04/06/2018 15:35

Shouldn't it be Cormorant? It's a shag.

GeekyWombat · 04/06/2018 15:40

I love it, but I love the novels. The Cameron question might get old quick.

QueenAravisOfArchenland · 04/06/2018 15:43

Um. I don't know the novels, but my brain is picturing him as a bird and just badly wants to add a "t".

What do you see his everyday name as being? Cor? It's a bit of a mouthful.

LemonBreeland · 04/06/2018 15:49

First thought was Strike, as I've just read one of the novels. Not keen on it tbh, and I do love unusual names generally.

bixquert · 04/06/2018 15:50

I think it looks like a mix between Cormac and Cameron-a bit like you just couldn’t decide. Also, my pregnant brain just keeps reading Korma! (Would love a Takeaway right now...) Anyway, sorry I’m not a fan

SorenLorensonsInvisibleFriend · 04/06/2018 15:55

Strike

Haven't read any of the books, but the tv series is fab. I just read it as a slightly unusual but pleasant boy's name now!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 04/06/2018 15:56

I think Tom has made it a name worth swooning over. However I think I’d worry about the Moron bit if I was usIng it for my son.

SorenLorensonsInvisibleFriend · 04/06/2018 15:58

(Tom is really quite swoony, isn't he..)

RavenWings · 04/06/2018 15:59

I just think of a bird tbh. It's ok. A bit of a mouthful maybe.

ShyOyster · 04/06/2018 17:33

I love the books but still mostly think about a bird when I hear Cormoran. And I do want to add “t” at the end.
Tbh I wouldn’t use it as my child’s first name. Maybe as a middle name, MAYBE.

bridgetreilly · 04/06/2018 17:35

I like the books but I've never thought that Cormoran really works as a name.

BishopBrennansArse · 04/06/2018 17:46

Reminds me of Monty Pythons Meaning of life when 2 boys had been caught rubbing linseed oil into the school Cormorant...

Ontopofthesunset · 04/06/2018 17:48

I don't know the book reference or the giant reference so I just think someone has misspelt cormorant.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 04/06/2018 17:49

If I saw it written down I'd assume it was a typo and meant to be Cameron to be honest. Would also be concerned about people calling him "moron" at school.

JayeAshe · 04/06/2018 18:04

Phalacrocorax carbo carbo or Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis , OP ... ?? Grin

Confusedbeetle · 04/06/2018 18:06

Dont give a child a name that school children will take the piss of.

HansSoloTraveller1 · 04/06/2018 18:07

It sounds like a scottish place name to me rather than a persons name.

BevBrook · 04/06/2018 18:10

Even Cormoran in the books is hardly ever called it - he has a thousand different nicknames, it seems! And he gets "Cameron?" I seem to remember, even though he is fictional. But there's nothing wrong with it in my opinion apart from the Cameron confusion and they are not more similar than say Molly and Milly.

bluemoonchances · 04/06/2018 18:10

Your choice but kids are cruel... I too immediately saw "moron" which is what is 'nickname' would likely be from other kids.

TatianaLarina · 04/06/2018 19:17

It’s the cormorant or shag to me. Plus those books were pants.

chickenpox100 · 04/06/2018 19:23

It's sounds lovely when you explain the context but to be perfectly honest, I thought you were asking for opinions on a new kind of baby cream or contraceptive pill at first!

Zoflorabore · 04/06/2018 19:31

Sorry op but that is awful.

Why would you give your child a name that they would constantly have to spell to people/have it pronounced wrong/have people take piss/is such an ugly name?

gallicgirl · 04/06/2018 19:35

Cormorant? Like a gull?

AlliKaneErikson · 04/06/2018 20:04

It did make me think of Strike...which is no bad thing 😘
