I'm a little bit in love with the name Valentine, but we are worried incase it's a little bit 'fruity'

Do you think we would be cursing our LO with an easy name to bully over?

His surname is European so would go well with with it as a first name... if that makes any difference!

I love it. Very French

Lustrum · 03/06/2018 17:26

‘Fruity’? Hmm

The only Valentine I knew was when I was early teens — he was around the same age, and was already the local mini-hard man, leader of the pack etc. Killingly good looking. Ended up doing time for GBH.

JasperWithTheGoat · 03/06/2018 17:27

We met a Valentino once at a park, his parents called him Tino for short which I thought was lovely

MikeUniformMike · 03/06/2018 17:27

It will get shortened to Val.

confusedyoungthing · 03/06/2018 17:32

I think it makes a good middle name only imo

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 03/06/2018 17:32

I love it, but would worry about Val.

Hellywelly10 · 03/06/2018 17:33

Lovely. I know one hes lovely.

Pereie · 03/06/2018 17:34

@Lustrum fruity as in unusual.

I'm good with It being short and to Val.

Just don't know how cruel kids are with names that are not so common. I think a Valentine would have been in for a hard time in my school playground, but names are getting progressively more unusual... I think.

I like it but would assume that was when he was conceived/born.

MrsMooks · 03/06/2018 17:37

It's my sons middle name, after his grandad. I love it

TatianaLarina · 03/06/2018 18:11

Valentin is the Russian, E.European, Spanish, Scandinavian version and also used in France. I think it’s more masculine and less teasable.

daisypond · 03/06/2018 18:13

Agree with Tatiana about Valentin.

upsideup · 03/06/2018 18:23

Beautiful name.
DS1 is Teddy Valentine sometimes Teddy Tino or just Tino, I love it and only reason we didnt use it as a first name on its own is because we didnt like Val which has actually grown on me.
Kids always tease eachother over boyfriends/girlfriends and crushes or valentines so perhaps near that time of the year between the ages of about 7-12 he may get teased a little bit more. Bullys will find someone to bully no matter what their name is and IME its actually often been the more normal named children who get bullied and the more 'fruity' named children who are the bullys.

Sophronia · 03/06/2018 19:23

I like it but I think it’s better as a middle name.

Benandhollysmum · 03/06/2018 20:01

Everytime I hear the name val for a guys name I think of the wrestler val Venis..

Kids will bully kids regardless of what their names are, my last name has been subject of ridicule and have to repeat and spell it constant so others make sure what I’ve said is correct, if you name your son that he will have the same trouble- the joy of names huh lol
But there’s plenty names he can get out of that..Tye, Val,tino, Al or maybe a nickname of his last.
Kids develop a thick skin anyway so if someone does say anything about his name he’ll probably just laugh it off.

sonnyboo · 03/06/2018 20:17

Lovely name ! Don't see what is 'fruity' about it?

Reminds me of Valentine Warner.

Branleuse · 03/06/2018 20:35

the only Valentine I know is female. I thought the masc was Valentin

Jesuisleloup · 03/06/2018 20:37

Love it

Also Valentina is pretty

daisypond · 03/06/2018 20:39

St Valentine is male. Valentina is the female version. Valentin or Valentino is the more usual male spelling and pronunciation on the Continent. I'd always assume a Valentine was male - not that I've ever met one!

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 04/06/2018 10:17

Agree with Tatiana, Valentin.

mrsnec · 04/06/2018 10:28

I like it. Ds was nearly born on Valentines day. It just sounded a bit rubbish with our very common very English surname. Sounds much better with a European one.

KarmaStar · 04/06/2018 10:31

Lovely name. And it doesn't have to be shortened,if he doesn't like it he came ask people to call him by his proper name.

SpottyBrolly · 04/06/2018 10:35

I love it. If DD had been a DS she would have been a Valentin, Lenny for short.

Branleuse · 04/06/2018 10:52

Im pretty sure that the valentine in St Valentine was not a first name. Valentine is feminine as a first name

sonnyboo · 04/06/2018 10:53

But Valentine is pronounced Val en tyne so that works well in English

The spelling Valentin, popular in Germany, is pronounced Val en teen.
