I'm a little bit in love with the name Valentine, but we are worried incase it's a little bit 'fruity'

Do you think we would be cursing our LO with an easy name to bully over?

His surname is European so would go well with with it as a first name... if that makes any difference!

Gorgeous name

lottiegarbanzo · 04/06/2018 11:19

I like it - and said so on another thread quite recently, do search for additional comments.

I'd want to keep it as the full name though, I don't particularly like Val.

I think Valentine works well in English, Valentin would confuse people pronunciation-wise, I think you'd get 'tin' 'teen' and 'tyne' and a lot of uncertainty.

SumAndSubstance · 04/06/2018 11:28

Valentine is definitely a boy's name Confused.
I like it, OP. I've taught a couple of Valentines (and a girl Valentina) and none got any grief over their name.

goldenrachita · 04/06/2018 11:43

Valentin is the more beautiful spelling. I love the name. Controversial maybe but I do think, like Romeo, it is only really advisable if there are some very good looking genes in the family. Otherwise it opens a more ordinary looking teenager child up to teasing. I always think the same about the name Bella, but that name is now so common it hardly matters.

sonnyboo · 04/06/2018 12:57

How would English people pronounce Valentin? Val-en-tin?

Valentine works much better in English. Great name!

Carouselfish · 04/06/2018 23:00

I met a very lovely looking Dutch one. Not uncommon there apparently. Clever to use Lenny spotty. Also nice unshortened.

Carouselfish · 04/06/2018 23:02

Golden like Marilyn. Toyed with that for DD, she's now Carmen and looks just like Marilyn!

Dionysa · 04/06/2018 23:07

Absolutely gorgeous. There is one in my family!

Pereie · 05/06/2018 08:04

Thanks for all of the responses and input!

You have all helped put my mind at rest Smile

Both me and DH are blessed with good genes so hopefully our little Valentine (or tin) will be the same.

I'll have a look for the other tread too, I missed it on my last search.

I know loads of Valentins as we live in Germany. Here it's as common as Ben or Max!

MollyHuaCha · 05/06/2018 08:19

Valentine - unusual, but I like it.

By the way, to pp suggesting Valentin - how is this pronounced?

Pereie · 05/06/2018 08:49

@MollyHuaCha

val-en-teen

Going against the grain I think it's embarrassing and awful. Sorry. Ymmv.

HansSoloTraveller1 · 05/06/2018 11:40

My male cousin is called Valentine after his dad. I love it.

TatianaLarina · 05/06/2018 13:33

I have to say I do think with the e on the end it’s a bit embarrassing for a boy.

MinaPaws · 05/06/2018 13:35

The only Valentine I ever knew was an illustrious academic who all the students adored and admired, so I like the name by association. I think it's bold. yes, a bit fruity, but why not?

TroubledLichen · 05/06/2018 22:26

Valentin pronounced in the French way so Val-en-tan (to rhyme with vin, the French for wine) would be lovely and is my (male) cousin’s name.
Val-en-teen is the feminine pronunciation and would be spelt Valentine. Valentine was on our list for DD but we decided it was too close to my cousin’s name.
I wouldn’t use it for a boy if you’re either going to spell it or pronounce it the feminine way.

Lustrum · 05/06/2018 22:31

Valentine Cunningham, Mina? I thought he was a total wanker. Grin

Bouncingbelle · 05/06/2018 23:17

Oh dear, where i love, a boy called Valentine would be absolutely slaughtered every day at school. Makes a fabulous middle name though.

bionicnemonic · 05/06/2018 23:23

Not often I say this on here but, I love it!
I used to know an Alan Tyne Smile

Snowysky20009 · 06/06/2018 07:57

We almost had Valentino (after Rossi Moto GP rider), as a middle name. We didn't in the end and I'm still gutted.

MinaPaws · 06/06/2018 08:10

Yes, Lustrum. Was he? Friends who were taught by him spoke in awed tones about him and his lectures were always crowded. This was decades ago. He may have become a wanker, or become outdated over time. But I always thought what a wonderful name when I heard the talking about him.

sonnyboo · 06/06/2018 08:12

I wouldn’t use it for a boy if you’re going to pronounce it the feminine way.

But you are referring to only the French way.

In German for example the male version Valentin is pronounced Valen-teen. The feminine version is Valentina.

And in English the male version Valentine is pronounced Valen-tyne

sexnotgender · 06/06/2018 08:17

Well known rugby player Zinzan Valentine Brooke!
Personally not a fan but it’s not the worst name I’ve heard on here.

TurquoiseDress · 06/06/2018 15:56

How about Valentin, the version used in France?
