French Middle name for boy 'Lugh'

bebehen · 03/06/2018 10:03

D-Day is approaching fast and we keep flip flopping on boys names (baby's sex is a surprise!)
We've loved a few and then, probably just over thought them !!

Now we are thinking Lugh - who is an Irish God, pronounced Lou / also like Hugh - I'm Irish, DH is French and although he is not bothered at all about having a French name in the mix, I like the idea.

So - any idea's of French boy names for a middle name for Lugh ? Or French words ? Eg: for a girl we had 'Hiver' (winter) as a potential middle name..

Help is greatly appreciated !!

What about:
Lugh Michel
Lugh Montgomerie
Lugh Fabien
Lugh Phillipe
Lugh Pierre
Lugh Gerrard
Lugh Basilios
Lugh Jacque
Lugh Jerome
Lugh Christophe

Not to be a killjoy, but you know a huge amount of people in the UK call a toilet a loo. You’re effectively naming him the same as a toilet.

maybejane · 03/06/2018 10:32

Just to note, as nice as it is, I wouldn't recommend using the name Lugh if you live in England by the way. There will be endless toilet/loo jokes. If you live elsewhere this may not be a concern however thought I'd mention it.

JaneJeffer · 03/06/2018 10:35

If you're in Ireland this would get pronounced as Lug which is slang for ear.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 03/06/2018 10:37

Hugues - French Équivalent of Hugh.
Hiver, for a girl born in the summer seems a bit unseasonal

Dermymc · 03/06/2018 10:37

It sounds like "loo" which could be the source of mickey taking.

There are so many beautiful French names, Christope, Jean, Pierre; why not use one of those?

Plenty of people are called Lou (e.g. me Grin) without mickey taking so I wouldn’t worry about that at all.

Heratnumber7 · 03/06/2018 10:42

Lugh? Confused
Are you having a laugh??

And FYI, if you're Welsh Hugh is pronounced Hew, as in hewing wood.

How about Louis? Works in French and English and you could find a nice Irish middle name.

chipsandcurrysaucemonster · 03/06/2018 10:48

I find it a bit odd the amount of people concerned with the association of loo as a word for toilet... Louise and Lewis / Louis are so often shortened to 'Lou/Lew' and I would say it's a very familiar and commonly used name? So I wouldn't let that put you off in my opinion

bebehen · 03/06/2018 10:56

Guys come on - lot's of Louis' will be shortened to Lou, Louise - Lou, Lucille, anyone in France that you like, you can call Lulu !
I'm not concerned about that ;)

Thanks for the suggestions!

I know - sad that if it's a girl we can't use Hiver, as it's a summer baby - maybe next time ;)

Being realistic, it's not the same thing to be affectionately nicknamed Lou as a shortening of Louise or Louis, and to be officially named Lugh. Most would introduce themselves as Louise or Louis and be referred to by their full names professionally or by teachers in the register at school, and the nn Lou would be assumed naturally thereafter. So, it's really not the same dynamic at all, imo at least. It is your child though, not mine, so you may name your child whatever you may desire. :)

MikeUniformMike · 03/06/2018 11:51

Lugh looks an ugly name to me and i wouldn't know how to say it. How about Hugh? It's a normal name and not ugly.

CoteDAzur · 03/06/2018 11:54

There are hundreds of beautiful French girls' names. Why would you choose a non-name that doesn't make sense for a summer baby and is pronounced in a completely different way in French & English?

Lugh would be a nightmare to explain to people as well. Can you imagine a lifetime of spelling it on the phone, then saying "Yes, it's weird. My parents thought they were bestowing special snowflakery on me with this name"?

bixquert · 03/06/2018 12:03

‘My name is Lugh, like Hugh with an L’ -problem solved.
I think the ‘loo’ thing is a non issue and there far worse names suggested on here daily!

Chewbecca · 03/06/2018 12:04

I'm sorry but the name Lugh makes me think of bleurgh and phlegm.

GlitterGlassEye · 03/06/2018 12:11

Yeah it’s very bleurgh looking.

LoveInTokyo · 03/06/2018 12:23

Lugh will be called “loo” and find himself the butt of many toilet jokes if you live in England. In France it will be met by blank confusion. Not a single French person will be able to pronounce it. Really surprised your husband hasn’t mentioned this.

beetfarmer · 03/06/2018 12:27

Can't you just use the spelling Lou? Lugh is really awful.

sweetboykit · 03/06/2018 12:30

Lugh Eegy
Grin

Ontopofthesunset · 03/06/2018 12:33

Do you know anyone called Lugh? I've never seen it used as a name or as a word in any way. I think the problem with it is that, although it is spelt the same way as Hugh, because it's an unfamiliar word, you automatically question how to pronounce it. And so the 'ugh' bit stands out in a way it doesn't with Hugh.

It looks like a cross between 'lug' as in 'lugworm' or 'lugholes' and 'ugh' as in disgusting.

ourkidmolly · 03/06/2018 12:33

I think that’s a stinker of a name, sorry. It’s not popular at all in Ireland either. It’s a lifetime of explanation. Everyone will think it’s Lou. If you’re keen on a French addition keep it simple like Jean or Pierre.

o0o0o · 03/06/2018 12:34

I love it!

Also have a French side of family so this would be on my list.

I love Estée, Noémie, Élodie for girls

Knittedfairies · 03/06/2018 12:35

I’m surprised at some of these posts; the OP wants to use an Irish name. Some of the comments could be considered racist...
