French Middle name for boy 'Lugh'

bebehen · 03/06/2018 10:03

D-Day is approaching fast and we keep flip flopping on boys names (baby's sex is a surprise!)
We've loved a few and then, probably just over thought them !!

Now we are thinking Lugh - who is an Irish God, pronounced Lou / also like Hugh - I'm Irish, DH is French and although he is not bothered at all about having a French name in the mix, I like the idea.

So - any idea's of French boy names for a middle name for Lugh ? Or French words ? Eg: for a girl we had 'Hiver' (winter) as a potential middle name..

Help is greatly appreciated !!

Did you consider Ludo/Ludovic? Then you could go Irish in the middle?

Or Luc?

I don’t hate Lugh, but I find it hard to say (assuming it’s more like lieu as in ‘in lieu of’ than Lou).

Back to original question, not sure how French, but I love Raphael. Or Etienne?

Oh sorry didn’t read properly! You said pronounced Lou - fine in that case, ignore me above!

@knittedshells
Racist? Don’t be so ridiculous. Point to one post which is even remotely racist.

AndromedaPerseus · 03/06/2018 13:18

If I saw that name written down I’d think he was called “Lug” so he’ll be forever explaining to others how to pronounce.

JaneJeffer · 03/06/2018 13:21

Racist me arse!

I love Lugh!! It invokes memories of performing dancing at lughnasa in my Gcse drama class. Great name.

Can’t help with French names but I do like Fabian. Lugh Fabian is lovely.

Ignore silly talk of toilets.

I have a Lucy who gets Lou so I don't see the issue with piss taking of the pronunciation (once you correct everyone because you'll get a variety of attempts - Lug, Luff, Luch with the ch pronounced the same as the Scottish pronunciation of loch etc) added to this Lugh doesn't look nice written down I thought it was a typo when I first saw it there are plenty of much nicer sounding & looking Irish or French names that you could use.

I know how hard it is as DS wasn't named until he was born due to needing an Irish name & the difficulty finding one the ex & I agreed on that wouldn't be too out there or difficult to pronounce incidentally his name can be either Irish or French.

As an aside where I'm from people named Hugh get called Shug.

NoStraightEdges · 03/06/2018 13:31

Etienne and Didier are my favourite French boys names. Manon is my favourite girls name.

bridgetreilly · 03/06/2018 13:35

It's an awful choice.

Shuggie here too. There was a shuggie in my class at primary school. He’s a very handsome shuggie now.

WhiskeySourpuss · 03/06/2018 16:09

Yep Dod for George is common round my neck of the woods Grin

TatianaLarina · 03/06/2018 18:55

It would work fine in France, I love the mythology around Lugh.
In the U.K. I think the Welsh version of Lugh - Llew/i or Llewelyn, or Louis would work better.

LapinR0se · 03/06/2018 19:00

How would it work fine in France?? I don’t think a francophone would have the faintest idea how to pronounce it

HildaOgdensFlyingDucks · 03/06/2018 19:03

Lugh Oui

TatianaLarina · 03/06/2018 19:19

I meant loo doesn’t have the same connotations in France.

They might not know how to pronounce it straight off, but once they do it’s easy.

I am Irish and have never ever seen or heard the name Lugh

As a personal name or as a deity?

ZibbidooZibbidooZibbidoo · 03/06/2018 19:36

I am Irish and have never ever seen or heard the name Lugh

That would be a pint in its favour for me.

Lugh is pronounced 'Lug', as in Lughnasa.

PhilODox · 03/06/2018 19:50

It can be loo/Lou as well as lug (more like loog really)

SnowOnTheSeine · 03/06/2018 20:08

I know a French "Lou" but she's a girl.

Wouldn't have a clue how to pronounce Lugh from a French point of view.

What style of French name do you like? lots of gorgeous names to choose from
