DH and I are really struggling with a name for our second DC due any day now. We both like Tristan but neither of us are completely convinced by it. I like that it is a traditional but uncommon name, and DH likes that it is Celtic.

My main concern at the moment is that if you google Tristan it comes up with loads of pages about Tristan Thompson and the Kardashians! I hate the thought of that being people's first thought when they hear the name.

What do you think about it?

Is it cornish? I didnt know that. It sounds a bit weak as a name.

Belindabauer · 03/06/2018 09:12

George & Mildred .

It was on our short list for DS but we were put off by the various meanings of "noisy" and "sad", plus obviously the T&I story itself isn't very happy (same reason we're put off the name Isolde). Absent those things I still think it's a really lovely name but it got a very poor reception whenever we shared our short list (won't make that mistake twice!).

Stardust. Also I went to school with a Tristan- he was nice enough. I quite like it.

flumpybear · 03/06/2018 09:26

I really like it! One of my really good friends names too Grin

DollyDayScream · 03/06/2018 09:38

A bright, cheerful, sporty but not overbearingly competitive good guy.

Neolara · 03/06/2018 09:40

Posh and a bit wet. Sorry.

florascotia2 · 03/06/2018 10:27

Although Tristan has become associated with Latin, French etc words meaning 'sad', it has a different origin. It's a version of Drust or Drustan, a Pictish name that probably means 'riot'. There was a Pictish king called Drust.

The Picts spoke a language related to Welsh and Cornish.

I like the name, my first thought was Tristan da Cunha, but I think he may have a lifetime of correcting people who want to call him Tristram.

I wouldn't worry about the Kardashians. I doubt they'll still be a thing when he reaches his teenage years.

TheGrumpySquirrel · 03/06/2018 11:13

I love it, but DH knows one too well so vetoed it Sad like that it's a bit Celtic and unusual

FASH84 · 03/06/2018 15:34

I think ugh, because I've only ever known one Tristan and he was a douchebag

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 03/06/2018 16:24

I don't like it sorry, rather wet.

AlReef · 03/06/2018 16:28

Showing my age, but all it reminds me of is legends of the fall

Seafoodeatit · 03/06/2018 20:58

Makes me of & Isolde too.

I wouldn't worry about the celebrity crap, by the time they're older none of it will be in people's minds anymore, people move on with celebrity culture very quickly.

Seafoodeatit · 03/06/2018 20:58

Makes me think of*

BillyAndTheSillies · 03/06/2018 21:05

Love it. Have a teenage cousin called Tristan and he's kind, funny and very creative.

tonsil · 03/06/2018 21:07

There's a really lovely song called Tristan by a musician called Patrick Wolf, the name reminds me of that Smile

haverhill · 03/06/2018 21:10

All Creatures Great and Small. Tristan’s big brother was Siegfried.

dingdongdigeridoo · 05/06/2018 00:27

Tristam Shandy and that bloody book. Having to write a long very boring essay about said book which is almost impossible to follow! I know it’s not the same name, but it always comes to mind.

And Tristan from the Gilmore Girls who was a bit of a douche. I kinda like the name though.

MikeUniformMike · 05/06/2018 10:58

It's ok but will get shortened to Tris. AAGill used to go on about Tristans.

FairfaxAikman · 05/06/2018 11:04

Da Cunha

diddl · 05/06/2018 20:56

Same as haverhill

I like the name.

twirlywho · 07/06/2018 10:21

Posh is what comes to mind.

Which I'm not saying is a bad thing.

Marcipex · 07/06/2018 10:26

Wet, very very wet. Sorry.

SasBel · 07/06/2018 10:34

I have one! (Scottish for tumult, or chaos) Tristy is very sweet, thoughtful, cuddly and loving. Massively emapathic, so could potentially be classed as ‘wet’ Grin

Interestingly, a friend of mine has an Isolde...
