Malin for a girl?

Is this a bit ‘out there’ or too different? (I don’t know any youngsters with the name)

I’m half Danish, so the scandi link means it’s not completely odd, and I’ve always been a fan or the name. But I’d like honest opinions...

I like it. My first thought was the Malin Fors series of books. It's unusual but not too out-there, it's easy to spell, it flows nicely and sounds feminine without being too flowery. I can't think of anything negative.

hastalavistababy · 30/05/2018 21:02

I love it - a bit unusual but still easy to pronounce and spell. Go for it OP!

Wallywobbles · 30/05/2018 21:07

In French it means shrewd or cunning.

MyOtherProfile · 30/05/2018 21:24

In general use in French it's more negative than that though, isn't it, Wallywobbles ? More like sly or mean.

Wallywobbles · 30/05/2018 22:18

No it's not necessarily negative. Depends on context. I'd use it when I wanted to say quick witted in English.

RedDwarves · 30/05/2018 22:18

It will be confused for Marlon by many people.

pinkhorse · 30/05/2018 22:25

It just reminds me of Love Island

Joeybee · 30/05/2018 22:33

I'm not too sure how to pronounce this name. It sounds a little plain to me.

MyOtherProfile · 30/05/2018 23:05

No not necessary but generally. If I heard someone describe a child as malin I would think they were being a bit negative.

applesandpears56 · 30/05/2018 23:51

Marian?

LinkyPlease · 30/05/2018 23:55

It's my DD's middle name, love it. But we spelt it Marlin Blush. Gets lots of compliments, clearly people we met are too kind to correct us!

MarthasGinYard · 30/05/2018 23:56

Fish 🐟

TheHumanMothboy · 31/05/2018 00:00

I like it, and there's a character in a Zelda game named Malin ( I would pronounce it like Talinn (English pronunciation, not Estonian!)

Buntysoven · 31/05/2018 00:35

Late to this particular weird party but OP I really like it and don't understand the need to call you names!

AGBforever · 31/05/2018 01:09

I've met two Malin's - in the north Highlands so we already have a strong scandi influence. I love it, and never known either lass to have issues on meeting new people's pronunciation

Emily7708 · 31/05/2018 01:16

I quite liked it but a couple of years ago there was Malin in Love Island and everyone called her Ma, like Nick Cotton used to say it in Eastenders. The shortening put me right off the name.

Clarashan · 31/05/2018 01:45

I knew a Scandi girl this name and pronounced it Marlin ... at first i thought of the fish but after 2/3 times it was just her name. I like it

Sessy19 · 31/05/2018 09:35

I really like the ‘Morlen’ pronunciation...I think that’s how my grandmother would say it as well, should check with my mum.
And thank you for the more positive posts, I really appreciate it 😊

I know a boy called this, like a lighthouse, his father told me.

Marcipex · 31/05/2018 23:50

Morlen is nice. Would you spell it that way?

Bouledeneige · 31/05/2018 23:56

I like it. I didnt think of any associations to do with fish, shipping forecasts, Marlon Brando or Maid Marion. But then I like unusual names and Scandinavia.

I think very few people would make any french association and I think its pretty rude to tell someone that a well known name from their country is a bad/stupid choice.

PinkAvocado · 31/05/2018 23:59

I liked it until I read what the word means in French and that completely changed my mind. It’s a bit like really liking the name Suka then finding out that in another language it is really unpleasant (it is ‘bitch’ in Polish). Once you know that there is another meaning in a different language (and one the child is not unlikely to come into contact with) you look at it differently.

Puffycat · 01/06/2018 00:16

No it’s horrible

Branleuse · 01/06/2018 00:19

It's my dentists name. She's lovely

ShamelesslyPlacemarking · 01/06/2018 00:23

I love it!

I considered it for my daughter (I have Danish background too, so also liked the Scandi connection) but it's quite similar to how my own name sounds at the start and didn't want people thinking I was trying to give DD a "mini-me" name. I ended up going for another 5-letter 'M' name that ends with n as well.
