Opinions on the name Delilah? And what it could be shortened down to I was thinking Dolly ( I wanted this as a name but got a lot of hate for it😬😬 )

I really love the song hey there Delilah so that doesn't bother me🤣💋 and I'm not religious so have never read the bible so that doesn't bother me either , thanks girlies 🤩🤩

It isn't all about what you like or what you think about the Bible story, thought is it. It will be how others perceive your daughter's name and the teasing she will receive from that.

She'll get bloody sick of the song being sung at her, I can promise that now...

daisypond · 26/05/2018 14:06

There is something in what Tatiana says - there could certainly be an element about reclaiming the name from the misogynous myth-making of the story.

French2019 · 26/05/2018 14:06

Sorry, I'm not religious at all, but the name definitely has negative connotations due to the bible story. As others have said, references to this crop up in so much art and literature.

I wouldn't choose to saddle a child with a name like that when there are so many other nice names to choose from.

Jj2431 · 26/05/2018 14:07

I have this on my list. I'm a little unsure because of the biblical story but one of the reasons I have it on my list is because my other two kids have a biblical name. It sounds pretty too. I do slightly worry about Tom Jones but not enough to completely put me off. It's like Gabriel is on my list and I'm worried he will get picked on and called Gay if I use it. I like to think I'd teach him to have a back bone but kids can be so mean so I'm still unsure. If you like it have it as it is a beautiful name

French2019 · 26/05/2018 14:07

The negative biblical association is purely misogyny.

I don't disagree, but the fact is, it's still a negative association with the name.

Really like the name! Lilah is a cute nickname! And Dee is also cute.

And as someone with a name that is in LOTS of songs, you do get fed up of them being sung at you , but it is kind of sweet that people think of those songs when they think of you.

Gierg · 26/05/2018 14:11

@Jj2431

I have a friend called Gabriel and we call him Gabe :)

daisypond · 26/05/2018 14:18

But Gabriel is always a hero character, not an evil one like Delilah is portrayed, and that makes a difference. Even characters like Jonah, say, who start of as baddies but then end up on the goody side, get redeemed. Delilah never does. She's a bit like Judas, and would you name your child that?

Jj2431 · 26/05/2018 14:20

@daisypond ok, you've completely put me off now. Good point lol maybe Lilah/Lyla?

Meeep · 26/05/2018 14:24

I know two little Lilahs. I wouldn't worry about the Bible story.
Saying that, I prefer Dolly to Delilah myself. Why not just Dolly?

noideawithboysnames · 26/05/2018 14:50

It’s lovely, I wouldn’t worry about the bible story and if people comment on it just say that you haven’t read the bible and don’t intend to so can they keep their opinions to themselves. I think in 2018 in a society where there is a large diversity of names using a name like Delilah shouldn’t be an issue. She probably will get bored of ‘hilarious’ people singing Tom Jones at her though. I would meet those people with the most dead pan ‘how terribly original of you, no one has sung that at us before’ (but I’m a sarcastic bitch) Go for it OP-and if you want to use Dolly as a diminutive go for that too!

malfoyy · 26/05/2018 18:31

I had a cat called Delilah and we used to call her Delly or Delly-Belly!

I do still hear the Tom Jones song though when I hear the name and that is a song about a man who murders his wife (fucking awful subject for a song) - so I'm not sure I'd use the name for a human.

MammieBear · 26/05/2018 18:43

It is a lovely name if meaning, story and song don't put you off it looks like it's sorted.

BackforGood · 26/05/2018 18:46

Why, why why

from me to.
However, at least it is better than 'Dolly' Wink
