Opinions on the name Delilah? And what it could be shortened down to I was thinking Dolly ( I wanted this as a name but got a lot of hate for it😬😬 )

I like it! I think Dolly could work well as a nickname. You could also use Lilah.

MrsCD67 · 25/05/2018 19:30

Hey there Delilah

SemperIdem · 25/05/2018 19:32

I like Delilah (hate Dolly though), however I’m Welsh and will always and forever starting singing “why, why, whyyyyy Delilah” which will at some point segue into Hey There Delilah each and every time I hear the name. And sometimes when I read it. Like now.

pickledmommy · 25/05/2018 19:34

Lovely and I like dolly as a little n

SnowGoArea · 25/05/2018 19:34

It's lovely. Not so sure about Dolly though I'm afraid.

The one I know just goes by Delilah, but 'D', Lilah, Lil could all be good nicknames.

pickledmommy · 25/05/2018 19:35

Whoops hit post too soon! I like dolly as a little nickname and as pp said lilah is lovely too

daisypond · 25/05/2018 19:44

Sorry, I hate Delilah. I wouldn't ever call a child Delilah because of the the bible story - it'd be a bit like calling her Jezebel. How about the Welsh name Dilys? Then you could have Dilly maybe for short.

imsoboredwithitall · 25/05/2018 19:47

Love it

ellalouise90 · 25/05/2018 19:49

I really love the song hey there Delilah so that doesn't bother me🤣💋 and I'm not religious so have never read the bible so that doesn't bother me either , thanks girlies 🤩🤩

I'm not religious either, but Delilah is a name that has cultural significance in all of Western culture - art, history, literature, etc, etc, so it does have a resonance about it that you may not particularly like. But on the other hand, you might not mind at all.

Sophronia · 25/05/2018 20:55

I like Delilah. I think Dolly could work as a nn.

Standardpubquizname · 25/05/2018 21:28

I hear 'why, why, why' and then 'Biblical villain. I'm a Christian but think that the biblical link is fairly well known in the western world even amongst non-believers in the same way that the Tom Jones link is known amongst non welsh people.

Standardpubquizname · 25/05/2018 21:29

meant to add Lila/Lilah is a lovely name and I also quite like Della

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 25/05/2018 21:34

Its a nice name but I can't hear Delilah without hearing the song- the Tom Jones one, not Hey there Delilah. What about Dahlia or just Lilah? I agree that Dolly is a cute nn for a little girl but it would be a ridiculous name for a grown woman.

SadSongsAndWaltzes · 25/05/2018 21:53

I love it. I vetoed it due to the biblical connections and the Tom Jones song, but actually now regret not using it.

RedDwarves · 25/05/2018 21:55

Concur with what PPs have said about Delilah being inextricably linked with the Biblical association, which is not a positive one. It's a sort of Jezebel, Lilith, Magdalene sort of name, where a lot of peoples' first thought is going to be negative, regardless of if you've ever read the Bible.

So, I wouldn't.

SexTrainGlue · 25/05/2018 22:00

Yes, the Biblical one is so well known that it's an awkward name to have (right up there with Jezebel).

If you want to call her Dolly, why not use the traditional name from which it flows - Dorothy? (Or Dorothea)

bettybyebye · 26/05/2018 07:47

I have a Delilah Smile we have only ever had (lots!) of positive comments about the name, not that I really care whether others like it or not. She’s nearly 3 now and it suits her down to the ground. She sometimes calls herself Lilah but we general use the full name. I think the bible references aren’t massively relevant in this day and age (and I say that as a Catholic!)

TatianaLarina · 26/05/2018 08:57

Love Delilah

I chose a name with a negative biblical connection because I've never read the bible and couldnt care less.

Noah is v.popular the last few years and I never think ark....

I wonder if the biblical connection concern is a generational thing? I'm mid 20s and only those of my parents generation (50+) have mentioned the link

daisypond · 26/05/2018 11:27

I wouldn't say it was generational. And I wouldn't say it was necessarily a biblical awareness, more just a general educated, cultural awareness. Anyone who has knowledge, of say, art, literature, history, that sort of thing, would know. Most people I know in their 20s would know the story of Delilah.

InkSnail · 26/05/2018 11:54

I like the name Delilah, nickname Della or Lila.

MikeUniformMike · 26/05/2018 12:57

Dilys is a bit ugh.
Delilah is nice but why, why, why... and the biblical character.
It's a No from me.

TatianaLarina · 26/05/2018 14:00

The negative biblical association is purely misogyny. Delilah was originally a moon goddess. (Samson’s hair may originally have been an offering).

Delilah actually means delicate or amorous, flirtatious, delightful depending on the etymology Hebrew, Arabic etc
