Is it too girly?

Sorry to post again about this but not telling people IRL so don’t have anyone to bounce my thoughts off.
Only name that myself and OH have agreed on for our son is Rowan. I posted about it and got positive comments but now I’m concerned it’s too ‘girly’
If you heard of a baby called Rowan would be be surprised to find he was a boy? Do you think it is a name that is going to be used more frequently for girls soon such as Evelyn, Aubrey, Lesley etc...
Thank you in advance!

I like it and it never occurred to me it was girly. Good choice!

Wolfiefan · 23/05/2018 18:05

I only know one. A boy. I really like it.

Shiftymake · 23/05/2018 18:06

I would assume it was a boy hearing it, lovely name.

SendYouUpinFlames · 23/05/2018 18:07

I would also assume boy. I've never heard of it before but I really like it.

MikeUniformMike · 23/05/2018 18:08

It is considered unisex, but I'd think of it as a boy's name. Rowan Atinson, Rowan Williams and Rowan Pelling spring to mind.

BagelDog · 23/05/2018 18:09

Well my great uncle, a couple of cousins and my second son are all Rowan’s and all male so I would assume boy. Never met a female Rowan in real life.

MikeUniformMike · 23/05/2018 18:10

Forgot to say, I quite like it, and it suits the aforementioned 3 people just fine and they are quite different from each other.
It's nice.

Ohyesiam · 23/05/2018 18:11

O, I’d be surprised if it was a girl.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 23/05/2018 18:12

To me Rowan is like Alex. Could genuinely be either, perhaps slightly more likely to be a boy.

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 23/05/2018 18:13

And no, I don't think it'll go the way of Evelyn etc.

userabcname · 23/05/2018 18:14

I have never met a female Rowan so I wouldn't consider it girly, no.

LoveInTokyo · 23/05/2018 18:15

I think it’s one of those names that genuinely could be either. But the only Rowans I can think of are men.

daisypond · 23/05/2018 18:17

I only like it as a girl's name. I know three, all girls. I don't personally know any male Rowans. I do find it slightly girly for a male name, although I know it's long established. I think it's the Rowan Atkinson Mr Bean character that puts me off it, though, which isn't particularly fair, but there you are.

rainingcatsanddog · 23/05/2018 18:17

I've only heard of male Rowans so am surprised to hear that it's unisex.

DramaAlpaca · 23/05/2018 18:18

I'd assume boy

sluj · 23/05/2018 18:19

Rohan for a boy

Foxsox · 23/05/2018 18:21

I grew up with a Rowan, he was male.
I haven't met any female Rowan'S but have heard a friend speak of one.
To be it's a male name.

Tropicana123 · 23/05/2018 18:21

I'd assume it was a boy also

N0tLinked1n · 23/05/2018 18:21

I like it for a boy. I wouldn't use it for a girl.

I thought you were naming a girl and were going to say something like '' is lilianna too girly?'' or something like that! misunderstood!

KirstenRaymonde · 23/05/2018 18:21

My ex bf was Rowan, it’s a lovely name and one of the few true unisex names. Go for it.

Rohan is a different name, with a different ethnic background.

JackietheBackie · 23/05/2018 18:21

I know both male and female Rowans and I think it works equally well. It is a lovely name.

MikeUniformMike · 23/05/2018 18:23

Atkinson.
Rohan is a bit too Lord of the Rings for me.

N0tLinked1n · 23/05/2018 18:23

I think some people almost revel in choosing a girly name for their boy, there was a thread here the other day saying Cass or Jess and it was for a boy. I know a boy called Kim although he's a teen now and I really like it on a boy but on a girl it would be a bit flat.

daisypond · 23/05/2018 18:25

I should explain that Rowan was strongly considered as a middle name for one of my daughters - and I'm much more into classic long-established names, so it's rather against type - so I have a soft spot for it. I regret not using it now as well.

AndCallMeNancy · 23/05/2018 18:27

To me it’s unisex. I know an adult female Rowan and a 2 year old boy with the name. I definitely prefer it for a girl, not keen for a boy but if you like it then go for it!
