What do you think of the name Amos for a boy? Do you know any?

I don't know anyone called Amos, I don't think. It always makes me think of an old knock knock joke to be honest!

InkSnail · 16/05/2018 21:21

I like it.

PixelAteMe · 16/05/2018 21:21

Makes me think of tweed jackets and flat caps. Was there an Amos in Last of the Summer Wine? I’ve never met one, but it’s definitely an uncool old man’s name .

AnyaMoondial · 16/05/2018 21:58

I love it. My friend's teeny weeny newborn is an Amos. I think it's fantastic.

pinkhorse · 16/05/2018 22:05

I have a friend called Amy. Everyone calls her Amos!

nooka · 16/05/2018 22:06

You might be thinking of Emmerdale Farm Pixel. Our dog is called Amos after Amos the publican from Emmerdale. He was a bit of a grumpy git Grin and the name was because his parents were 'chapel raised', so I'm guessing Methodists.

LadyPug · 16/05/2018 22:07

Makes me think of the poor bloke married to Roxie Hart in Chicago

bridgetreilly · 16/05/2018 22:19

I know one, but he's German. It's very old-fashioned and, of course, biblical. I think it could be quite old-man-cool, though. Unusual but easy to spell and pronounce.

CoolCarrie · 16/05/2018 22:19

There was an Amos in Emmerdale Farm, as it was called then, back in the 90s, he owned The Woolpack.

Anasnake · 16/05/2018 22:20

Amos and Mr Wilkes

River93 · 16/05/2018 22:20

It’s a name very popular in the traveller community

Ohyesiam · 16/05/2018 22:21

Old man from Yorkshire. I’m not sure why.
Time for a revival though I think.

Sophronia · 16/05/2018 22:31

I really like it.

AlbertaSimmons · 16/05/2018 22:33

Not unheard of in these parts (West Yorkshire) Wink. I like it but it's very "local" iyswim.

annandale · 16/05/2018 22:34

Cold Comfort Farm to me but there's nothing wrong with it, it's a nice sounding name.

Mwnci123 · 16/05/2018 22:35

I like it.

lookingforbutterflies · 16/05/2018 22:35

Down trodden husband in Chicago Confused

TenThousandSpoons · 16/05/2018 22:36

Due a revival, I think.

ScrubTheDecks · 16/05/2018 22:41

Amos is a great name.
Love it.

Yes, Cold Comfort Farm, but so are Reuben and Seth (and Flora) and they have raced up the babyname charts.

buttercup54321 · 17/05/2018 03:43

Really don't like it. It sounds cold.
Ambrose?

RedDwarves · 17/05/2018 04:06

I like it, but Americans pronounce it almost the same as "anus" (rather than ay-MOSS with emphasis on the second syllable), and I heard a Kiwi say it the same way recently which has put me off.

Hefzi · 17/05/2018 04:08

I love it, but like PP, it always makes me think of Cold Comfort Farm. Just so long as you don't also have a Seth, though - otherwise, I wouldn't risk Something Nasty in the Woodshed Grin

nooka · 17/05/2018 16:55

North Americans can't pronounce Amos at all, the 'o' in moss seems to be a real struggle so our dog mostly goes by A-moose. Luckily he responds to pretty much anything friendly :) Not that that should be a big consideration for the OP unless she has American relatives or plans to live there. Craig is another name that gets a bit mangled - I'm sure that there are others, and a few that Americans think British people screw up too.

heateallthebuns · 17/05/2018 16:58

Yeah also reminds me of the character in Emmerdale farm. But then you'd have to be quite old for that!!!

onemouseplace · 17/05/2018 17:03

My old boss was friends with an Amos - he was Israeli and it was pronounced A-moss with a short A as in amaze. I quite liked the name.
