Hubby and I really like Olive for a girl (Olive Joan Nora) but I am worried as it’s a bit unusual and I would hate if she was teased/didn’t like her name. Do you know any olives, how was the name received, any thoughts? Thanks

I don't know any but I think it's a lovely name x

I know a lady in her 80s called olive and I recently met a 5 week old called olive. I think it’s a fab name.

susurration · 14/05/2018 09:49

I love Olive. One of my all time favourites and on my list for future daughters.

Gdacsmum · 14/05/2018 10:10

Thank you, I heard someone at soft play calling their daughter Olive the other day and it made me feel even more sure of it. Just worry as it’s a bit of a marmite kinda name, love it or hate it. I think it’s classy and yet alternative and also earthy and wholesome...just don’t know if others will see it that way!

I love Olive. That was on my list also before I knew I was having a boy.
Olive isn't that unusual anymore, and it's a good alternative to the overly popular Olivia. I think the name you've picked out is beautiful.

Gdacsmum · 14/05/2018 10:12

Thank you, our other choice is Florence Joan Nora but I am tentative as Florence is very popular now. On the other hand it’s a safer choice...so tricky! We already have a son named George and I think both match well with that.

Olivia's been overused and Olive is growing on me. Know a teenage one and a toddler one !

KellyMarieTunstall2 · 14/05/2018 10:14

Olive is a lovely name. So is Joan ( my daughter's middle name)

Treadlightly · 14/05/2018 10:17

I taught an olive a couple of years ago & she was such a lovely girl - really cool & clever! I love it & it's quite unusual

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 14/05/2018 10:17

Olive just reminds me of Popeye, and I don’t think Olive Joan goes that well, as they both seem to just stop rather than flow. I think Olivia Joan works and flows perfectly, but I’m personally not a fan of the name.

I prefer Florence and definitely think that works better with Joan too (although Joan is a rather old fashioned name).

Gdacsmum · 14/05/2018 10:29

Thanks for your message. I agree Joan is deffo an old fashioned name but I think that’s why I like it. It’s after my hubbys granny who is 99 and still going strong. Nora was my Grans name. I like old lady names but I am grateful for your thoughts as I know they’re not everyone’s cup of tea which is why I worry a little

Aww that’s a fab association thanks for that. That’s the dream for kids isn’t it, cool, clever, confident and happy!

Olive is lovely! I think it's a great alternative to the common popular Olivia.

Realistically, she's going to get Liv or Livi as she grows up isn't she, so I doubt she would be teased for it being unique.
Also, in my experience of uniquely named children, the child is loved regardless of the name. Both our parents hated DS name when we suggested it before he was born, but of course they loved him the minute they set eyes on him!

Gdacsmum · 14/05/2018 10:43

Very good points thank you greyweather. Do you mind me asking what you names your ds please?

I don't want to say it, but I can say that the comments we got were "ugh no it's a dogs name!!!!"

It is increasing in popularity though- I've seen a few threads about it on here recently!

MammieBear · 14/05/2018 10:51

Go for it.

CheeseTheDay · 14/05/2018 10:53

7-year old DD3 is Olive, and we had largely positive reactions, when we revealed her name.

However, even those who weren't so keen - namely my ILs - have grown to love it, as they love DD.

My daughter is a bundle of energy, brimming with confidence, and has a willful independent streak. I like to imagine all Olives are the same! Grin

SumAndSubstance · 14/05/2018 10:53

I had a great aunt Olive- she was a lovely, generous and kind lady. I think it’s in that same mould as other ‘old lady names’ which are popular at the moment, without being overly used itself at the moment. I like it- I agree it will seem familiar enough to everyone because of the popularity of Olivia and Oliver, but it’s a bit more interesting.

padfootprongs · 14/05/2018 10:58

Definitely increasing in popularity, I know 3 baby Olive's!

I didn't love the name when I first heard it but now I know babies with the name it's grown on me!

sonnyboo · 14/05/2018 11:30

I'm afraid I can only think of an oily green olive... Not very feminine!

cheesydoesit · 14/05/2018 12:07

I love it.

MyRelationshipIsWeird · 14/05/2018 12:22

I like it but I think it would sound better with the middle names swapped round (don’t know if there’s some family hierarchy that you need to follow, but if not...!) Olive Nora Joan flows better.
