Love it! I think it will be ds2's name. But it's not a popular name on mn. I think you just have to go with a name you love and not care what others, especially those you will never meet, think.

AyeWhySwim · 11/05/2018 15:41

I sort of agree @Fannyfanakerpants - but at the same time I want to balance that with choosing a name that won’t immediately have a negative response from a large number of people. I guess you can’t ever know that really either! It’s interesting to hear what people think anyway - in case it throws up something that’s not occurred to me.

I think anyone over a certain age will think "& Doyle". :-)

chickensaresafehere · 11/05/2018 15:48

As on ode to the very beautiful Patrick Swayze in Point Break - I think it's a great name.
But it depends on your age Wink

PavlovaPrincess · 11/05/2018 15:48

I'd think Patrick Swayze in Point Break.

He'd have to be one cool dude to carry it off.

Aprilmightbemynewname · 11/05/2018 15:49

Isn't Bogie a cruel nn though?

FreckledLeopard · 11/05/2018 15:51

Point Break is my favourite film so I'm a little biased in liking the name. Technically, though, would you call your DS 'Bodhisattva' since that's what Bodhi is the shortened version of. Also, I'd imagine that a child called Bodhi would have to be super-cool (think long-haired surfing Australian) - not sure that all kids could carry off such a name!

Also - for those children who know nothing about Point Break - is there a risk that they might call him Bogey?!

chickensaresafehere · 11/05/2018 15:52

Now you have me googling facts & pics of Point Break [swoon] & I thought this might interest you op -
Tyler (Lori Petty) explains to Johnny that the name Bodhi (Patrick Swayze) is short for Bodhisattva. "Bodhisattva" is a term in the Buddhist religion meaning an enlightened being who, out of compassion, forgoes nirvana in order to save others. Bodhi means "awakening."

sonnyboo · 11/05/2018 15:52

Is Bodhi pronounced Bogey Confused?

Fannyfanakerpants · 11/05/2018 16:00

sonnyboo it's pronounced Bo-dee. Like Brodie without the r.
I think a lot of names can be shortened/ changed. And if theyre going to be teased, they'll be teased, no matter their name.

twinjocks · 11/05/2018 16:00

I don't mind the sound of the name, but there's something about the spelling that I just find really really offputting - can't explain why - it just doesn't look nice to me (and I realise that sounds illogical!). I would be happy enough to say "Bodhi" but not to write it!

Heratnumber7 · 11/05/2018 16:02

Bow-dee or Bod-ee or Bod-hee?

Lovemusic33 · 11/05/2018 16:04

I love it, go for it, don’t listen to anyone that says otherwise.

BewareOfDragons · 11/05/2018 16:05

Point Break!

I like the name, but it is a very 'surfer' sounding name.

AyeWhySwim · 11/05/2018 16:05

I didn’t get any of these references! Have seen Point Break years ago but don’t remember much. Might have to rewatch it and see what it makes me feel to hear the name.
I’m not fussed about things like nicknames as literally any name can be turned into something rude/gross if you try or rhymed with something.

Patrick Swayze is just divine in Point Break (as is Keanu). It made me want to go and live in California and learn to surf (I did neither).

Sorry, completely off topic.

AyeWhySwim · 11/05/2018 16:17

Keanu sticks in my mind rather than Swayze...mmm...😍
Baby Keanu??!

Imo ethnic names are odd unless you have some sort of connection to the heritage of the name. Bodhi would be odd if you have no Buddhist connection.

Ohyesiam · 11/05/2018 16:27

My association is dreadlocks on white people.

Cosmoa · 11/05/2018 16:43

Love it! My friend recently named her son Bodhi and everyone seems to love it! But it's the kind of name our friend would love.

The general Mums net taste is mostly traditional and samey samey... A lot of my friends kids have names like..Luna, Willow, Artemis, River... So unusual names like Bodhi always go down well!

Cosmoa · 11/05/2018 16:45

^ Oh and my friends aren't Buddhist and don't have dreadlocks yet no one has an issue with the name! ^ 😛

RavenWings · 11/05/2018 18:26

I agree that something about the name is very off-putting to me. It reads very try hard, Eat Pray Love, found self in an ashram on the Gap Yah kind of name. I actually like it as a sound but I think the child would need to be cool to pull it off.

Luna and Willow are bog standard, regular names imo, this is something a bit different.

bridgetreilly · 11/05/2018 18:57

Bodhi Zen spa. Very weird as a name to me.

AyeWhySwim · 11/05/2018 19:18

Well, I’m glad I asked!
I heard it, I liked it, I saw the spelling and presumed an Irish heritage Hmm. Even when I read about the origin I hadn’t realised the connotations were so strong to most people. I’d rather avoid a name with such strong associations to a cultural type.

Where to draw the line though? My ds has a traditional Irish name yet we have no Irish roots. Shouldn’t we have done that?? Feeling a bit paranoid now!

RavenWings · 11/05/2018 19:26

I think the difference is India holds a bit of mysticism for Westerners, while Ireland doesn't. Im yet to hear of anyone finding spiritual inner peace and zen in Moneygall or Navan.

That doesn't mean don't use it, but you did ask what our associations would be. And I think the Irish name is grand. Sean, Liam, Conor etc are common names in the UK afaik (and I'm Irish, btw).
