Well we've finally decided on a name for our little girl x Laura, what does everyone think when they hear it

I agree that it isn’t a classic name. Kind of like Lorraine or Sharon tbh.

Tumbleted · 03/05/2018 08:14

Pip how can Laura sound like cloud? 🤔

Amomentofbeauty · 03/05/2018 09:27

Tumbleted, if you say 'Lowra', but you'd doom your child to a life of mispronunciation if you did that in the UK.

Hugely disagree that it's like Lorraine or Sharon. I think it is a really classic name. My Nan, in her nineties is called Laura.

LoveInTokyo · 03/05/2018 09:39

It would be Laaawra (like “allow”) in some other languages like Spanish. I don’t think people would mispronounce it in the UK though.

It’s quite an 80s sort of name in the UK but I have met little French Lauras.

I wouldn’t let that put you off OP, because it’s still a pretty name and I don’t think names like Laura, Claire, Sarah etc will ever really date like Janet and Susan and Carol have.

lottiegarbanzo · 03/05/2018 09:51

It's such a different name from Lauren or Lara. I like both but still perceive Lauren as a 'fresh' modern American import and Lara as romantic and Russian.

Laura has a much longer heritage, whether or not you want to call it classic.

Bellabutterfly2016 · 03/05/2018 10:38

I have 3 Laura friends all are fab!

Laura-Jayne (double barrelled)
Laura Anne
Laura Mary

pipilangstrumpf · 03/05/2018 11:37

In German Laura is pronounced Lau (rhyme with cloud) ra. Like Claudia (cloud) or Auch.

shirleyschmidt1 · 03/05/2018 12:07

Love Laura, it's classy and pretty. Best of all I think it'll be quite a rare choice nowadays.

Lmj25 · 03/05/2018 12:08

Laura may here Grin

shirleyschmidt1 · 03/05/2018 12:08

There could be any number of middle names to go with it really - is there anyone you know you'd be inspired to middle-name her for?

ElizaDontlittle · 03/05/2018 12:18

Love it - it was on my list though I also wondered about Laurel and Lauren and even Loralie.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 03/05/2018 12:20

Laura Grace.
Laura Jasmine
Laura Daisy
Laura Bethany
Laura Jessica
Laura May
Laura Jane
Laura Adelaide
Laura Madison

Wow thank you all for your replies, I wasn't expecting this response.
I'm glad as it's mostly seen as a positive name, wanted something 'normal' but classic.
We loved emma but it's shot up at the moment so was looking at similar names and my little boy cake out with it out of the blue and insisted we called her that and it's really grown on us.

Yes trying to find a middle name, we're not using family names as there are so many and I don't want to leave anyone out.

Out of the suggestion I loved Juliet as a first name but worried it'd be shortened to Julie but I think it could work well as a middle name, also like Jane xx

It's a lovely name...feminine, classy and classic.

Scribblegirl · 03/05/2018 12:27

It's my name, and my middle name is one that's already been mentioned up thread twice Wink.

I wasn't a huge fan of it when I was younger as it wasn't as out there as I thought I was (!) but I love it as an adult. It's got literary references, it's pretty, it's pronounceable and, as someone who has wound up in an industry that's very global for work, it's a name that international colleagues don't struggle with! I'd definitely use it for a daughter if it wasn't my name.

Cowardlycustard2 · 03/05/2018 12:35

It’s my name I’ve always liked it. Don’t know about it being a common name like Sharon or Karen as pp have said Hmm. I remember always the only one of that name in my school and at college.

liquidrevolution · 03/05/2018 12:40

I love it. But then I have an Emma so love these type of names.

PuppyMonkey · 03/05/2018 12:41

Watched the wonderful old b&w film Laura the other day and was thinking to myself it’s a name that deserves to come back. Again.

Btw, op, if you watch that film, your new DD will have her very own classy theme tune.Smile

astonvanilla · 03/05/2018 12:47

It is my name and although I wanted to be called Debbie in the 80's I love it! There is a 4 year at my son's preschool called Laura too so works for all ages.

LovelyBranches · 03/05/2018 12:50

I like Laura but Laura Jane is just too 80s and it sounds dated.

I think if you are going to use Laura (which is lovely), you would need a middle name that seems quite fresh.

Laura Emmeline
Laura Alexandra
Laura Thea

DrinkYourGreenTea · 03/05/2018 12:56

I’m not keen. It’s plain and outdated, very 80s. I much prefer Lara.

MinaPaws · 03/05/2018 12:56

I love it.

climbingtrees · 03/05/2018 12:59

One of my friend's has just named her daughter Laura. My first response was 'love it'. As a few have already said, very common for 80's babies but unusual nowadays. Beautiful choice

RosieCotton · 03/05/2018 22:00

My mother in law is Laura. Its a beautiful name. Its strong and still feminine. Its not a name that will age badly.

I know others have mentioned middle names but its a solid name that doesn't need one. Yes if you have one plan by all means use one but don't be deterred of you don't find one that will go with it. Laura is due a come back its a great name.

Bagadverts · 03/05/2018 22:06

Love the name, don't know any irl. I think partly because I loved the Little House books (Laura Ingalls Wilder).
