Elsie-May or Elsie-Rose?

Can't decide between Elsie-May or Elsie-Rose, and with or without the -? My mums name is Rosemary, which is why I wanted Elsie-Rose but if we went with May then the middle name will be Rosalie :)
My DP is a bit useless as he says he likes both!
What do you prefer?

I prefer Elsie Rose

HarryLovesDraco · 01/05/2018 22:13

Neither of them. Elsie hyphen anything is dated and naff and especially May or Rose - the most boring, generic filler names of our generation.
What about Elsie Rosalie Surname? Or Elise Rose Surname. Rosalie Elise Surname, Rosalie May Surname. Definitely not Elsie May in any configuration.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/05/2018 22:26

The s sounds in Elsie Rose are too repetitive to my ears so I vote for Elsie-May

LoveInTokyo · 01/05/2018 22:34

Rosalie is a much better name than any of those.

LoveInTokyo · 01/05/2018 22:36

Elsie-May or Elsie-Rose is like, Victorian scullery maid meets the Waltons.

TatianaLarina · 01/05/2018 22:49

Hyphens are just - no. And May and Rose are the most hyphenated of all.

Rosalie is 100% nicer than either. And it’s a combination of Rose and Elsie.

Rosalie May would be great.

nonbikerchick · 01/05/2018 22:52

I'm a hyphenated name but it's an actual French name and still I hate it.

Hyphenated names are awful.

Elsie Rose, Rose as middle name no hyphen! If you have to have Elsie at all.

Elise is a much nicer name...

RubyFlint · 01/05/2018 22:56

Elsie Rose

RubyFlint · 01/05/2018 22:56

I meant to say no hyphen

TatianaLarina · 01/05/2018 22:58

Anne-Marie is fine.

Lexi-May, Ruby-Rae, Bonnie-Blu not so much.

Wolfiefan · 01/05/2018 23:01

Ditch the hyphen.
First and middle name.

LovelyBranches · 01/05/2018 23:04

Rosalie is beautiful and the nickname Rosa is beautiful too.

Elsie is nice enough

Elsie May or Elsie Rosé are boring.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 01/05/2018 23:05

I would lose the hyphen. Both are pretty, but like Rose the most.

I love Rose as a first name though, and would choose that to be honest!

KirstenRaymonde · 01/05/2018 23:05

Don’t hyphen, one day she’ll be an adult and won’t want a cutesie dolls name

LyingLowForABit · 01/05/2018 23:06

Rose Elise

felicitythemangyfox · 01/05/2018 23:06

Elsie Rose (no hyphen)

JingleJangle951 · 01/05/2018 23:08

Elsie-May sounds too similar to the beer called Elsie Mo

www.ratebeer.com/beer/castle-rock-elsie-mo-cask/13853/#!

Rosalie is beautiful by itself.

eatthepineapple · 01/05/2018 23:17

I like Elsie May (no hyphen). I have May as my middle name, after my great grandmother Ethel May (though I didn't get Ethel...fortunately!), and we also gave May to my daughter as a middle name. I know it is pretty common now but that's because it's nice. For us I don't feel bad as there is a family history of it and I like that. Strangely Rose was a close alternative as it is DH's mums name who has passed away, but as 2 of her granddaughters have it in their name we didn't feel the need.

So basically I'm saying don't let it put you off that it's popular. I def like Elsie more than Rosalie. I would have considered it for my girl too but it is too close to my name. But no hyphen, it's too cutesy for my liking!

IVflytrap · 01/05/2018 23:18

Elsie Rosalie
or
Elsie Rose

Sophronia · 01/05/2018 23:18

Elsie Rose without the hyphen

Velvetbee · 01/05/2018 23:20

Rosalie May is very pretty.

eggncress · 01/05/2018 23:30

Elsie May without the hyphen. my gran’s name and also was unhyphenated

Anxiouschild · 02/05/2018 00:02

I'm not hugely keen on either TBH, as I think May and Rose are really over-used at the moment.
I'm not keen on double/hyphenated first names at all if I'm honest, but if you do go for something like this personally I'd use a hyphen to make it clear it's all the first name. A friend named her child with a double first name (no hyphen, not sure how else to describe it!). Sometimes they use just the first part of the child's name but mostly both parts. I'm still slightly confused as to if the second part is really just a middle name (80% sure it isn't!) and I'm always unsure what to call the child in case it's wrong. Just the first part = potentially rude because it's not their name OR both parts = potentially a bit weird to 'full name' someone constantly.

blairsey · 02/05/2018 00:06

I like both Elsie May and Elsie Rose, but with no hyphen. I had a friend named Georgia-Rose growing up and she hated having the hyphen, it always made things difficult with the "No that's all my first name, there's a hyphen". Please don't.
Also think the combo Elsie Jo would be lovely by the way!

NoSquirrels · 02/05/2018 00:09

I think if you don't hyphenate, it gives people options later on. So I'd vote for First Name/Middle Name and just pick whichever you prefer out of Elsie, May, Rose and Rosalie and make the combination your like best.
