Shortlist: French/Irish/English baby girl!

Help me whittle down our shortlist!

Surname traditionally Irish beginning with ‘M’.

DH is Irish, I have a French father and English mother, so names that work in all three countries would be fabulous as we spend lots of time in France/Ireland with extended family.

The shortlist is:
Clara
Alice
Fleur
Orla
Caoimhe
Kitty

Anyone any positives/negatives about these names?

Thank you!

Kitty is terrific.

CocoLoco87 · 24/04/2018 20:01

I love Clara best and then Alice. I wouldn't know how to pronounce Caoimhe!

BroomstickOfLove · 24/04/2018 20:03

Similar mix to me. I like Clara, Alice and Kitty best.

Eenymeeny123 · 24/04/2018 20:04

Caoimhe is pronounced Keeva or Queeva depending where in the country you are from. Fleur and kitty are different and pretty. Caoimhe is very popular in Ireland now

Hobbitch · 24/04/2018 20:07

Definitely Clara or Alice.

HumpHumpWhale · 24/04/2018 20:09

I'm Irish and I really like Caoimhe, but you can't do that to a kid who isn't going to live in Ireland.
Una is nice too, but not sure how it would play in France.

OlennasWimple · 24/04/2018 20:13

Kitty is short for Catherine or Kathleen (depends if you mind about that stuff)

I love Orla and Alice (easy to pronounce for everyone). Caoimhe is tricky spelling for the non-Irish family members

How about Marie? (I love alliterative initials Smile ) Or similar like Annemarie / Annamarie?

Or Beatrice?

Adele?

Annette?

Eleanor?

OlennasWimple · 24/04/2018 20:14

Oh, I wouldn't go for Fleur, nice as it is, because it's literally "Flower" for your French relatives

Ilikecakes · 24/04/2018 20:16

I LOVE Kitty, but can I also throw Erin into the mix?

MollyCule · 24/04/2018 20:26

How about Maeve? Or Maeva which I believe is becoming more popular in France. I really like Orla and Kitty on your list.

NameChangedForBabyNames · 24/04/2018 21:25

Ooh I like Erin!

Caoimhe might be tricky for the French contingent, that’s true.

Clara and Alice seem to be the front runners at the moment then!

Marianne! Sounds elegant in England, sounds like a modern twist on Mary in Ireland and it is French.

Caoimhe is also very close to Kevin obviously which surprisingly was very popular in France.

Clara is beautiful.

NameChangedForBabyNames · 24/04/2018 21:32

Sadly Maeve has been vetoed by DH, and I already have a DN called Marianne, so that takes out Marie/Marianne/Annemarie.

One of my French friends is called Fleur, I love it, it is underused.

RedDwarves · 24/04/2018 21:41

Clara, Alice and Orla are my favourites.

SwedishEdith · 24/04/2018 21:43

Irish people I know whose names would work in French as well.

Gabrielle
Julia
Antoinette

Do you want a short name?

RidingWindhorses · 24/04/2018 22:11

Caoimhe will baffle the French. I'd say Orla from your list.

I like Manon.

stellinaa · 25/04/2018 00:46

I like Fleur and Clara (though much prefer Cara, more elegant). Also love the above suggestions of Gabrielle and Erin too!
Wouldn't saddle a child with Kitty.. will make for a lot of jokes as she gets older iyswim.

NameChangedForBabyNames · 25/04/2018 08:04

I do like Julia, but loathe Julie which puts me off a bit. I tend to prefer shorter names as I feel there’s less potential for nicknames!

Hadn’t thought about the Kitty based jokes, shame as I love that name!Sad

Josephine

LoveInTokyo · 25/04/2018 14:19

Clara is the best.

mathanxiety · 25/04/2018 20:29

I like Clara and Alice best of your list and with pronunciation in mind in all three countries. Caoimhe is gorgeous too, and I would hope that relatives would get used to the pronunciation and work with you.

Lara would be nice too.

Orla is too close to Orly (airport), and the R might defeat the French speakers and non-rhotic English speakers alike. Though the R in Clara would also affect the French pronunciation of Clara. I think Alice would end up as Alees in France too.

Fleur sounds to me like a combo of blur and flux.

Kitty I would use as a nickname, with Catherine or Kathleen on the BC. Sweet name.

mathanxiety · 25/04/2018 20:34

If you want something completely pronunciation-proof:

Lucie
Leonie
Sofia
Sophie
Camille
Juliette
Emma
Margot/Margaux
Mariam/Myriam
Lola

pilates · 25/04/2018 20:35

I was going to say Orla and then noticed it was on your list.

TroysMammy · 25/04/2018 20:38

On a school French exchange I stayed with a girl called Corrine.
