We had a shortlist of four names before our daughter was born in March 2014. Elsa was on that list. Both in our mid twenties so oblivious to whatever Disney were putting out.
We went with Elsa in the end (partner was aware of the lion reference, for me I knew it’s also a line in Oasis - Supersonic). About a week after that, mother in law asked ‘did you know she’s a Disney queen’? We looked it up, saw the DVD was coming out about a week after her birth so bought it and thought nothing more of it.
Since the film came out on dvd it absolutely exploded, not helped by everyone doing cover versions of Let it Go all over YouTube. I think it probably peaked in winter 2014 but obviously there’s a second film coming out.
Reaction wise, you get three groups - one who make no mention of the link, a second who say ‘like in Frozen?’ and a third who are oblivious to the film but say ‘like Let it Go?’.
Frankly I’ve given up caring, I’m of an age where there were a few Kylies in school, two Michael Jacksons and other names that are definitely of an era (Wayne, Simon etc.) To answer the original question I don’t think it surged the name’s popularity, probably lots of folk with the same dilemma. In a way it’s nice that it’s not as common as a Jack or Isabel or any of the royal names.
She takes it in her stride and frankly embraces the link, the only thing you’ll occasionally get is older kids who ask what her real name is. Hoping nothing daft happens in the second film I suppose but I wouldn’t let it put you off.
