What do you think of the name Rory? It's my DH's front runner if we have a boy but I'm not sold. All I can think is Rory Mcilroy and I'm not a golf fan...

I dislike it.

stellinaa · 15/04/2018 10:54

I never said that Rory was a shortened version of any of those names...That is because Rory is an established name on its own - not short for anything! I simply meant that each of those names have the reasonable potential to be used with Rory as a nickname.

Talk about being argumentative for argument's sake. Hmm

reddressblueshoes · 15/04/2018 10:55

I like it, but there are lots of Rorys in Ireland so it doesn't feel at all unusual or like it should be short for something.

I think any Rory-short-for-Auroras would have a strange time in Scotland or Ireland!

MinaPaws · 15/04/2018 11:00

I love it. It's a great name.

QueenofSerene · 15/04/2018 11:23

I dislike it because I worked with a shitty male colleague named Rory. I recently had a son and went with Harvey.

midsomermurderess · 15/04/2018 14:43

Christopher can be shortened to Kit. I too like Rory, though, my nephew's name.

Fuzzyduck21 · 15/04/2018 19:18

I have a Rory and adore the name. So much so that we have a 2 week old ds with no name as we can't find one we love as much! It's becoming more popular but I don't know of another one x

badg3r · 15/04/2018 19:21

I get what to mean about the long/short names. I used my favorite long versions as middle names so they would not get shortened.
I love Rory. What about Alexander/Alex/Sandy or Philip/Phil/Pip? These were the only two I liked the long and short versions of!

Squashpocket · 15/04/2018 20:00

We have Irish blood on my side, so I guess there's a connection there.

Like Kit as a nn for Christopher, but would assume that he'd end up a Chris despite all efforts when he goes off to school etc.

Alexander is lovely, but not sure about Alex. See I'm a nightmare Grin

I like Alexander and Alex. Not sure where in the UK you are from but I am in Scotland where Sandy is a common shortening of Alexander.

Quickerthanavicar · 15/04/2018 20:06

lovely

Squashpocket · 15/04/2018 20:19

We're in England. Didn't know sandy was short for Alexander until just now Blush

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 15/04/2018 20:34

Love Rory or Ruari/Ruairi (Irish)/Ruaraidh (Scottish)

Also love Sandy (one of the most handsome men I have ever known was called Sandy - swoon)

LesLavandes · 15/04/2018 23:03

I have a Ruairí and love the name!

17caterpillars1mouse · 17/04/2018 11:48

I really like it. I know a girl Rory and a boy Rory both under 3

Baubletrouble43 · 17/04/2018 11:51

Haha assigned my dad is called sandy but he's late 70s ....

Cookie1831 · 17/04/2018 20:07

Another owner of a cheeky gorgeous Rory here, I wasn’t fussed to be honest husband picked it but now I love it and it suits him so so much great name x

Flyingchimps · 20/04/2018 00:05

Adore the name 😍 DH vetoed it but was talking to a sonographer at our regular scan and she knows she is having a boy but couldn’t agree on a name- I suggested Rory to her... when we returned 2 weeks later she informed us that’s what they had agreed on 😂😂

madamedepoppadom · 20/04/2018 14:27

Rory isn't originally short for anything, although I have heard that in Scotland it has sometimes been used as a short form of Roderick.

I have a relative called Rory who is most definitely male, and I've always liked it for a boy. I don't really like it for a girl.

Two combinations I've heard with it that I liked were Rory James and Rory Alexander. They both have the advantage that while Rory isn't really shortenable ("Ror!" is OK for shouting across a football pitch but doesn't really stick as a nickname), the middle names offer a few more possibilities if Rory ever fancies a change.

TroubledLichen · 20/04/2018 14:43

I really don’t like it. I’ve never met one and I’m not into golf so do associate it with a girl because of the Gilmore Girls. Much prefer Christopher/Kit or Alexander.

pipilangstrumpf · 20/04/2018 17:45

Some people can't pronounce their R. That would be a problem with Rory Shock

MikeUniformMike · 20/04/2018 18:14

Rory Bremner, Rory McGrath...

MikeUniformMike · 20/04/2018 18:15

I really like Sandy, Sasha, Alec and Alex.

SomeKnobend · 20/04/2018 18:17

I love Rory. Is your surname Lyons? Cute!
