HELP with (unusual but not too weird) boys names!

DH and I are expecting a little boy and are hugely struggling with boys names. We’ve had a girls name on lockdown since before I was even pregnant but that’s now no use... I’m a teacher which makes me quite fussy as there are a lot of names I associate with other children and I’ve scoured two baby books to no avail...

The two names that we like (but don’t love) are Toby (Tobias) and Percy (Percival).

I also like Rupert, Vincent, Dylan, George and Abraham (although I’m concerned that last one is a bit too American sounding) but DH has vetoed them...

In short, we’re looking for a name that’s not too common but also not too weird (we really liked the name Wolfgang -because it’s bloody awesome- but decided against it as it’s too Germanic and we’re not brave enough to call our son that in actuality!).

Minds of Mumsnet I’m looking at you for inspiration!

I love Vincent! I particularly love Vincenzo nn Enzo, but with absolutely no heritage to justify using it I wouldn’t feel right to do so.

Raymond
Rudi
Xavier
Adrian
Hugh
Otis
Otto
Jeremiah (nn Jem?)
Nathaniel (nn Nate)

We loved Wolfgang and Percival too! I would say go for Percival Percy.

I love Toby - there's that song with the line "and I've never met a Toby that I didn't like"

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 10/04/2018 22:51

George is the furthest thing from unusual.
I'm falling over them.
Andrew. Lucian. Xavier. Finbar. Conrad.
Edison. Raymond.

pipilangstrumpf · 11/04/2018 07:33

I agree, there are loads of Georges as well as Tobys!

Oh and Kirk

Speedy85 · 11/04/2018 07:42

You might like Jebediah (nn Jeb or Jed). I like it but my DH has said no obviously biblical names.

Clambering · 11/04/2018 07:51

I've got a Felix and most of our alternative names have already been mentioned. I used to know an Oswin. It's Old English, I think.

autumnkate · 11/04/2018 08:08

I taught a lovely boy called Jed.

A colleague recently had a Fenn. I quite like it.

EdemaRuh · 11/04/2018 18:52

Some really lovely suggestions - thank you all.
I like Fenn (and I actually know a Finbar) but we can’t have any Finn related names..
I also know that George is quite popular since Princess Kate but it was one of the names on my ‘like but can’t have’ list. I have never in all my years met a single Toby however! Are the Tobys you all know young or old? Maybe it’s on the rise somewhere but not here..
I really like Rosco. That’s one to ponder over.. Rudi is cool as well; it reminds me of Rudyard (Kipling). I also like Ezra but think that’ll become much more popular with the rise of George Ezra (two great names)!

I know three Tobys and they are all 10 or 11. Great name though. I would have considered it if it didn’t seem so popular when we had DS (he is ten now).

Sagegreen · 11/04/2018 19:32

My Dd would have been a Tobias(Toby), Thaddeus, Gregory (Greg) or Hugo.

SuburbanRhonda · 11/04/2018 19:37

DS’s best friend is Willem, a name I love and rarely seen on these threads.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 11/04/2018 19:42

I love Tobias.
I know of 2 Toby's who are 3 & 5 (not short for Tobias though).
