Baby names: would it be weird to abandon a pattern among cousins?

Expecting DC3 who is going to be a girl...

I have 2 DSes, as does my sister.

My sister's children are older and have 2 syllable names ending in N. this wasn't on purpose, a name she liked followed by a place inspired name. I then had my first DS and used a name both DH and I liked, coincidentally, 2 syllables ending in N. Didnt really think about it until DS2 came along and we used a family name, from DH, a maiden name that would have disappeared otherwise but worked as a male first name. But also, 2 syllables ending in N!

So by accident a bit of a clear pattern. And strangely enough DH and I have 2 syllable names ending in N and M so our names all have the same kind of sound/feel.

Two questions:

Do you think we need to maintain this pattern for DC3, even though it wasn't on purpose...I am worried that anything else will stand out like an afterthought...or maybe I'm overthinking...?

Can you suggest your favourite girls names that fit this pattern?

Thank you!

Don’t think you need to follow the pattern at all, but if you want to then how about Lauren?

LML83 · 08/04/2018 09:19

you are overthinking it. It's just a coincidence who would you be maintaining the pattern for?

Don't worry about it pick the name you like. If you want to keep the pattern only name I can think of just now is Morven. I am sure there are lots more though.

Scottishgirl85 · 08/04/2018 09:19

No need for a pattern, nobody will have noticed it! Girl's names we considered/are considering are Morven and Merryn.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 08/04/2018 09:20

Eden

LynetteScavo · 08/04/2018 09:20

I think you need to break the pattern.

Americantan · 08/04/2018 09:22

Overthinking.

GinUnicorn · 08/04/2018 09:22

Marian
Ffion
Dionne

I personally think though if you prefer something different then just go for that. A pattern isn't important.

ChocolateCrunch · 08/04/2018 09:23

Erin
Autumn
Eden
Rowan
Caitlyn
Ellen
Robyn
Kathleen

Personally, I think it's fine to continue with the pattern!

longestlurkerever · 08/04/2018 09:25

I think tbh it's be a teensy bit odd to deliberately continue with this slightly meaningless pattern, though I think this about a lot of naming traditions and would never say so as it does no harm and is none of my business really. The kids probably like it. Bethan is my favourite girl's name ending in n. I also like Erin,

mammmamia · 08/04/2018 09:27

I think lots of choice for names ending in N so you may as well continue it, I think it’s sweet and gives your DC a nice link with their cousins.

A lot of MN looks down on ‘matchy’ names though but I have twins with matchy names so I don’t care Grin

Aspergallus · 08/04/2018 09:46

Thanks for your thoughts...DH would agree that I am overthinking. Don't think he noticed until I pointed out.

It wasn't on purpose and I do feel a bit cringey at having ended up all matchy matchy. But at the same time when I try a name out for the feel of it and imagine writing our names in a Xmas card (not cousins but me, DH, DSes) I feel like anything other than a 2 syllable names ending in N (or maybe M, like DH) seems a bit like an outlier.

What I'm not sure about is whether I'll be able to let this feeling go when the name and child becomes a reality or whether it will always offend my sense of order. I am quite an obsessive person; I like logic and order to things.

mammmamia thank you, I think that is helpful and I guess if a name of this type really grabbed me and I could be content that the pattern continued with a really good name (rather than choosing a name to fit the pattern) that would be the ideal solution.

The thing is, the time for which your child will be living with you and included on your Christmas cards will actually be (hopefully!) a small proportion of their lives. The importance of 'matching' sibling names isn't really relevant when they are independent adults which is a lot longer time than them being children.
Having said that, all my children have (accidentally) ended up with names that are exactly the same length (first and middle) 😆

SoupDragon · 08/04/2018 09:54

My 3DC unintentionally all have 2 syllable names ending in that N/M sound 😂

I wouldn’t worry about breaking the pattern though. You might find you are naturally drawn towards a name that fits anyway.

TatianaLarina · 08/04/2018 10:45

I like patterns among siblings but cousins is not necessary.

If you continue the pattern for your kids they would tally with the cousins by default.

Some posters look down on matchy names and matchy outfits - with the upshot of random kids names that don’t go well together and poorly co-ordinated outfits. Grin

Aspergallus · 08/04/2018 10:59

soupdragon yes I think I must be naturally drawn to these names sounding sort of right! Just don't have one for DC3-to-be yet! Has anyone ever asked you if your DC got their matching names on purpose? Or made any other comment?

tatianalarina thank you, that made me laugh!

No, no one has ever commented on it. I didn’t realise at first either.

They are mainly lovely names with this pattern and you could always form a family band although having one different is also quite cool ... Ryan, Helen, Ethan, Devon and Mary (I don't know you if I got any names right by the way!)

SomeKnobend · 08/04/2018 16:42

God no. Nobody will notice or care about this pattern. Don't give it another thought, just pick a name you like.

TatianaLarina · 08/04/2018 16:43

I would. Easter Wink

Aspergallus · 08/04/2018 18:05

Thank you all.

OK, I'm thinking no one really cares about this pattern thing...except me. I am going to think about N and M names for a month or so to try and satisfy my sense of order BUT if nothing really grabs me, I will think more widely.

Thanks for the suggestions, there's one up thread I think I might be liking...
