Fine but be aware that it's pretty popular - he may well be known as Dylan [Surname initial] in primary school.

DullAndOld · 08/04/2018 12:53

sorry but I think it sounds really wannabe hipster.
Dylan (Dillon) sounds wet and 'Dylan 'Dull-an' which is the correct way of saying it, sounds dreadful.
It might not help that there was a 'Dillon' in my son's class who would come in wearing full official football kit every day and check other kids' labels to see if they were genuine. He was in year 3.

"There are thousands of names that are pronounced differently in different countries. Jesus being a great example grin"

Well, no, Jesus is actually translated into the different languages. It's not spelt Jesus in all the languages, just like John is Jean in French, etc.

"'Dull-an' which is the correct way of saying it, sounds dreadful."

Yet, you've chosen the same sounds for the beginning of your MN nickname!

Luke Perry is Dylan in Beverly Hills 90210

I also know a Welsh Dylan and he pronounces it Dillon......and he speaks Welsh!

wonderstuff · 08/04/2018 13:31

I’m wondering if there’s a north/south Welsh variation? I have a Dylan (we do sometimes call Dill) and my south Welsh speaking relatives say ‘Dil-Un’ but maybe they were anglicising their pronunciation? Sadly no longer with us so I can’t check. I know south and north Welsh differs enough that my Mamgu couldn’t understand people in north Wales (though that may have just been her). I say DilAn most people say dil-un. And he’s lovely (mostly).

Gwenhwyfar · 08/04/2018 13:35

"I’m wondering if there’s a north/south Welsh variation? "

I've already answered that. The pronunciation in Welsh is according to the rules of Welsh spelling and pronunciation and it's Dull-ann in both north and south.
Minitch's friends whose a Welsh speaker but pronounces it the English way, I wonder if he anglicises it for English acquaintances. I can't imagine he'd introduce himself 'Dillon ydw i' in a conversation in Welsh.

mintich · 08/04/2018 14:08

Perhaps he does. I'll have to ask as I never knew it was incorrect until this thread!

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 08/04/2018 14:58

Gwen-nope, Jesus spelt Jesus has different pronunciations.

Gwenhwyfar · 08/04/2018 15:14

"Gwen-nope, Jesus spelt Jesus has different pronunciations."

But these are translations and as I pointed out, it's not Jesus in all languages so it's not a matter of different language speakers pronouncing it differently.
It's similar to how the names of kings and queens were traditionally translated.

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 08/04/2018 15:28

If you read back what you've written it's exactly the same in this instance. Spelt the same, pronounced differently.

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 08/04/2018 15:33

Perhaps I'm not being clear. Jesus in Spanish. Spelt Jesus, pronounced Hay-soos. Different countries, different pronunciations.

Muddlingalongalone · 08/04/2018 15:41

Loved Luke Perry - Dylan was much better than Brandon!!!
I think It's a nice name, very popular in dd's primary school and in the 20-30 age group at work, and I know a girl Dylan.
I don't really understand how names can be badly behaved, apparantly Ryan my #1 boys name falls into this category too, but the one in dd's class does fit that mould.

Onetraumaatatimeplease · 08/04/2018 16:17

Ha ha @cosmic. I have one. Also named for the poet! Lovely name, lovely boy.

slippynips · 08/04/2018 17:12

I like this name, but when I suggested it to OH he said no because he might get called “Dillion the dildo” in the playground Hmm.

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 08/04/2018 17:17

Slippy Grin

MikeUniformMike · 08/04/2018 20:22

How about Dhillon?

BestIsWest · 08/04/2018 20:51

According to google we can all blame Dylan Thomas’s mum who apparently insisted on pronouncing it Dillan.
