@Gwenhwyfar, my experience differs from yours. That doesn't mean I'm incorrect.

If you have issue with those that I've met who spell and pronounce their children and themselves that then I suggest you correct all of them along with the many others who use this too Hmm

Heratnumber7 · 07/04/2018 23:11

It's definitely pronounced Dil-an in our family, I've never heard anyone say Dull-an
Your family are pronouncing it wrongly. It's a Welsh name and a y makes a "uh" sound in Welsh.
Call him Dillan/Dillon if that's the sound you like.

YerAuntFanny · 07/04/2018 23:12

I blame Bob for the confusion 🙄😁

glitterbiscuits · 07/04/2018 23:16

It’s a very cool name for a boy. Need a bit of style to carry it off.

BestIsWest · 07/04/2018 23:16

Yer right there Fanny. I blame Bob too and The Magic Roundabout didn’t help.

squoosh · 07/04/2018 23:19

I blame Luke Perry.

Dylan - thoughts?
Starlight2345 · 07/04/2018 23:24

I have a Dylan so obviously like it . I will say I get many variations on how it is spelt Dillon or Dylon. No idea why as we pronounce it Dill an

YerAuntFanny · 07/04/2018 23:24

I don't know who Luke Perry is!

BestIsWest · 07/04/2018 23:36

I know who Luke Perry is but I don’t know why it’s his fault.

PinkAvocado · 07/04/2018 23:50

Is Dill-un not just an alternative pronoun citation rather than ‘wrong’? I’ve only heard it pronounced that way outside of Wales.

PinkAvocado · 07/04/2018 23:52

Excuse the autocorrect Grin

RedDwarves · 08/04/2018 05:46

Dill-un isn't incorrect in the same way that Jen-ah-veev for Genevieve isn't incorrect. It's just not how it's pronounced in its native language. Woopdy-do.

BestIsWest · 08/04/2018 09:58

It is a mis pronounciation but I know lots of Welsh people who say Dill-an. I remember when I worked in Cardiff having a discussion with my colleagues who had never heard it pronounced ‘Dull-an’.

SuburbanRhonda · 08/04/2018 10:04

I love it.

Unless you’re in Welsh or living in Wales, I see no reason to adopt the Welsh pronunciation. You would forever be saying, “I know it looks like it should be an “i” sound but it’s Welsh and they say it with a “u” sound. No, we’re not Welsh”

Or “I know it’s pronounced “Dullan” but it’s spelt “Dylan”. No we”re not Welsh”.

I’ve not heard it as dull- an and I live in South Wales - is that more of a north Wales pronunciation? Or maybe I’ve just not been listening properly!

BestIsWest · 08/04/2018 10:22

Well, I live near Swansea.

BestIsWest · 08/04/2018 10:24

Oops pressed enter too soon - I hear both.

llangennith · 08/04/2018 10:31

Dylan is very common around the Cardiff area and it’s never pronounced dull-an.

SorenLorensonsInvisibleFriend · 08/04/2018 10:53

I wanted a Dylan for the Bob connotation. Love my Bob. But it just wasn't the right name for our family. I think I'd like it for a girl, though.

FancyNewBeesly · 08/04/2018 10:57

Both my twins have it as a middle name as it’s an anagram of my late mums name. Would have used it as a first name if I’d only had one.

Raisinbrain · 08/04/2018 11:09

I like it.

Gwenhwyfar · 08/04/2018 11:38

"Cardiff area and it’s never pronounced dull-an."

I don't think you can be 100% sure that it's NEVER pronounced dull-an in the Cardiff area!

Gwenhwyfar · 08/04/2018 11:41

" is that more of a north Wales pronunciation?"

No, it's not regional, but the dull-an pronunciation is the Welsh one and as it's a Welsh name people familiar with the Welsh language will pronounce it that way. People who don't speak Welsh and haven't learnt the Welsh pronunciation might use the English pronunciation.
Dylan Thomas presumably called himself Dillon, but these days when academics talk about him on the radio they use the Welsh pronunciation.

Gwenhwyfar · 08/04/2018 11:43

"@Gwenhwyfar, my experience differs from yours. That doesn't mean I'm incorrect."

You're incorrect in your understanding of Welsh spelling and pronunciation and Dylan is a Welsh name. So, yes, you're incorrect.
Having said that, the Dillon pronunciation is now well established as a variant.

WaitroseCoffeeCostaCup · 08/04/2018 12:34

Just because that's how it's said in Wales doesn't mean that's how you pronounce it in English. There are thousands of names that are pronounced differently in different countries. Jesus being a great example Grin
My Daughter's name is Greek. We use the English pronunciation. It's not 'wrong', it's just how it is!
