The name Nicol has popped into my head! We have actually agreed on boys names (for future reference) but Nicol has really grown on Me🤔

I like it Smile

FlatTopVera · 06/04/2018 12:10

Me too!

PretABoire · 06/04/2018 12:12

How is it pronounced? Nickel? Nicole? Nee-kol?

MrsScrubbingbrush · 06/04/2018 12:15

I like it!

There was a very famous and very talented actor around in the 1970s called Nicol Williamson.

DrEustaciaBenson · 06/04/2018 12:16

There was an actor called Nicol Williamson, so there's at least one other you can point to as an example of it being used as a first name.

MissMoodyMoo · 06/04/2018 12:16

In my Scottish accent it's pronounced nic-il 😂🤔

PalePinkSwan · 06/04/2018 12:17

I like it and know it as a first name - pronounced “Nick-ol”.

ChickensGoBoak · 06/04/2018 12:18

There was one in my class at school (So mid 20s now). She spelled it Nichol though. She was constantly correcting people tough, who called her Nicole

whathaveiforgottentoday · 06/04/2018 12:18

I've taught a Nicol and pronounced it Nicole.
I like it.

MissMoodyMoo · 06/04/2018 12:19

Actually it sounds more lick nick-ol in my accident🙈 kind of like Nicole said fast🤔

My daughter has it as a middle name I really love it, we should have used it as her first name.

RainbowdropsandUnicorns · 06/04/2018 13:17

Might not affect your choice at all, but Disney are meant to be releasing a film called Nicole soon. Different name obviously, but very similar.

RainbowdropsandUnicorns · 06/04/2018 13:25

Ignore me, looks like it's going to be called Noelle now anyway. I thought I would post, as it might be like using the name Elsa for your child just before Frozen was released.

KiraL · 06/04/2018 13:27

Love it!

clarrylove · 06/04/2018 13:29

Nichol? Papa?

HoratioNightboy · 06/04/2018 14:15

OP, it's well-known in Scotland as the Scots form of Nicolas, so no-one will judge it as anything more than a traditional Scottish name. There are one or two born every year so he certainly wouldn't be alone in having the name.

Thistlebelle · 06/04/2018 14:21

I wouldn’t judge it’s a perfectly nice name and fits with the Scottish tradition of using surnamed as first names.

I’m Scottish and would pronounce Nicol and Nicole differently but I think in lots of parts England they’d be pronounced the same.

Look for example at how southerners pronounce Karl as Carol.

If that bothers you it might be best avoided.

BikeRunSki · 06/04/2018 14:23

Look for example at how southerners pronounce Karl as Carol.

Eh? (Londoner)

pipilangstrumpf · 06/04/2018 14:29

I like it. Looks like the male version of Nicole.

Thistlebelle · 06/04/2018 14:29

Perhaps I’m wrong Bike Bit all the English Karl I’ve known have had their names pronounced Ka-rel.

That’s not how we say it in Scotland.

How would you pronounce it?

pipilangstrumpf · 06/04/2018 14:29

Nicol, emphasising the first syllable

Thistlebelle · 06/04/2018 14:30

Nicol is a reasonably common surname in Scotland. It’s not an unknown or made up name.

TimesNewRoman · 06/04/2018 14:39

I know a few Nicols. Mostly older men but definitely due a come back.

squoosh · 06/04/2018 14:45

Reasonably common Scottish surname. Pronounced nickel like the metal/coin isn't it?

Defender90 · 06/04/2018 14:51

I found it as a first name when doing my family history.

Late 1800s, SW Scotland.

I really liked it, and would have wanted to use if we were blessed with any boys.
