Marie? And pronunciation

cornflowery · 04/04/2018 15:06

Marie is top of my our list. It's a name that appears in all sides of our families- despite them being from different parts of Europe - which I think is lovely. And I love the name too.
Anyway, DD due any day now. DH said last night that people will pronounce it just like the word "Marry" - which I don't particularly like.

People sometimes mispronounce, or rather just put emphasis on a different part / vowel of my DS name. It doesn't actually bother me too much. But we use a shortened version of his name (which everyone knows how to say) quite a lot - and we can't really do much shortening with the name Marie.

We are thinking of Marie Eloise Lastname, so opinions on that would be nice too.

Is there a region of the UK (or elsewhere) that pronounces it like marry? I've only heard Muh-REE (or Ma-REE) in the UK.

harrietm87 · 04/04/2018 15:12

It's pronounced marry in NI (kind of
like the Scots Mairi)

SardineJam · 04/04/2018 15:12

Agree, I only know it as Muh-REE

DragonsAndCakes · 04/04/2018 15:13

I’d say it muh-REE as I’ve known two spelt that way.

xLeanne128 · 04/04/2018 15:14

MA-REE lovely name x

xLeanne128 · 04/04/2018 15:15

Now im saying it to myself think I meant muh-ree, confused however Frank says it to Marie from everybody loves Raymond 😂

redbirdblackbird · 04/04/2018 15:16

My Irish mother is Marry

cornflowery · 04/04/2018 15:16

@harrietm87 I think that's the accent though? Half of my family are from NI and I liked the way they said it - in the context of their accent iyswim.

Only heard it Murree apart from Marie Claire the magazine and Marie Antionette. Don’t know any Marie under 40 btw.

AlisonBlunderland · 04/04/2018 15:19

I would pronounce it Marry but as noted above, I am from Northern Ireland.
If it was a hyphenated name, I would say Marry-Louise but Anne-MuRee.
Go figure

HoratioNightboy · 04/04/2018 15:22

I'm in Scotland and I've only know real-life ones as "Marry". Unless it's hyphenated with Anne-Marie, or Marie Osmond, when I'd say MaREE.

I know a Maree spelling pronounced that way - she said she was named after Loch Maree.

Peppas · 04/04/2018 15:23

I'm not Irish and have heard it pronounced Marry twice, the more common is mah-ree.

Much prefer Marry myself, I think the other pronunciation a bit plain, possible because it's been overused as a filler middle name during the 80s and 90s.

cornflowery · 04/04/2018 15:24

As part of a hyphenated name I think a pronouncing it Marry is a lot more common (i mean prevalent / likely not common as in "lower class")

Yeah I agree with @AlisonBlunderland - I'd say Anne-Ma-Ree but deffo Marry otherwise, if the person was Irish (I'm Irish too).

If they're not Irish though I'd probably assume it was Ma-Ree rather than Marry.

It's not really an accent thing @cornflowery - it's like it's a different name (Gaelic Mairi as opposed to French Mary).

JessieMcJessie · 04/04/2018 15:30

Unlike the Scottish previous poster I have only ever heard it pronounced Ma-REE in Scotland. Particularly as we have Mhairi pronounced “Marry”.

I’d only say Marry for Marie if it was Marie-Claire.

DonkeyOil · 04/04/2018 15:31

I think It's only if I saw it as the first part of a hyphenated name - Marie-Rose, for example, that I would say 'marry'. If on its own or in e.g. Anne-Marie, I'd say ma ree. There's no logic to it!

CaffeineAndCrochet · 04/04/2018 15:31

I'm in Ireland and know people who pronounce it both ways.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 04/04/2018 15:32

It's a pretty name and sounds kind of fresh these days. I would say MaREE.

DonkeyOil · 04/04/2018 15:34

Particularly as we have Mhairi pronounced “Marry”.

The only Mhairi I've ever known pronounced her name 'var-ree'.

JessieMcJessie · 04/04/2018 15:39

I knew someone would bring that up Donkey Grin I vaguely recall reading somewhere that Mhairi is pronounced Varry in the vocative case in Gaelic so when you are addressing the person you’re meant to say Varee but if talking about her you say Marry. I’m sure a Gaelic speaker can explain further.

I’ve known both Marry Mhairis and Varry Mhairis. I think it still stands true that Marry is a very common pronounciation of Mhairi in Scotland ( think of that song we all grow up with, Mhairi’s Wedding) much moreso than a pronounciation of Marie.

Thistlebelle · 04/04/2018 15:47

I’m Scottish and know women called:

Marie - marry
Mairi - marry
Mhairi - varry
Maree (like the Loch) - Ma-ree

Confusingly (now that I think about it!)

Marie-Claire is Marry-Claire
But Claire-Marie is Claire-Maree

Sorry, that probably doesn’t help at all!

If I met a Marie who introduced herself as Maree I’d go with her pronunciation though.

MaryPoppinsStoleMyHandbag · 04/04/2018 15:47

I’m in NI and have only heard it pronounced ma-ree except when it’s Marie-Rose then it’s Marry-Rose. I work with a Marie who pronounces it as Ma-ree.

ArieltheMermaid1720 · 04/04/2018 15:50

I'm also NI and would pronounce Ma-ree

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 04/04/2018 15:50

Have you considered Jane instead?
Grin

KanyeWesticle · 04/04/2018 15:56

M-uh-Ree (like Much) seems the obvious prononciation, or perhaps Marr-ee (Andrew Marr)
